I think max 3 months. But all the problems with Ryzen will be fixed by then, it will be cheap and you get the AM4 socket which will last for next 2 generations.

Edit: Also there is no guarantee that the new intel line won't have any early problems.

nice glass sphere you have there. where have you bought it?

again: if you wanna play the waiting game -> you can do it always. if you need power now the decision should be clear, if you dont need it now the rules may have changed when you think again about buying a new system in a few months

I know about the waiting game.

But it seems that after the last few years of barely any advancement in the CPU scene, that thanks to AMD in the next few months there might be some relatively big changes coming up.

Similar to back then with the jump from 1-to-2 cores, and 2-to-4 cores.

Im also eager to change the 2500k, but I will wait some months until we can see the true potential of Zen and those Intel 6cores if they arrive on summer, then I'll decide on changing or keep waiting until Zen 2. Right now the 2500k is holding pretty decent on everything I do or play, so theres no hurry.

You got your 7700k yet? If so... did it do the trick? Compared to the 2500k I mean. I'm still on the fence...

Nope, as i wrote on the last page near the end i'm still deciding between 7700k, 1700, or waiting a few months.

Though i already wanted to upgrade in January this year, though decided to wait till Ryzen was out.

I will do some more research on the weekend. But i still tend more to getting the 7700k now, delidding it, and enjoy it for what it is.
If the next Intel CPUs that come out in summer are really that much better, well then i sell the 7700k again, and just live with the loss i made.

Intel to unveil Basin Falls, launch Coffee Lake ahead of schedule
Quote:
Intel will unveil its Basin Falls platform, i.e. Skylake-X, Kaby Lake-X processors and X299 chipset, at Computex 2017 in Taipei during May 30-June 3 two months earlier than originally scheduled, and will bring forward the launch of Coffee Lake microarchitecture based on a 14nm process node from January 2018 originally to August 2017, to cope with increasing competition from AMD's Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 processors, according to Taiwan-based PC vendors.

The Basin Falls-based products are expected to be launched at the E3 gaming show in the US in June, with the official release at the end of the month.

The Skylake-X series has three 140W processors featuring 6-, 8- and 10-core architectures, while the Kaby Lake-X series has an 112W quad-core processor. In August, Intel will release a top-end 12-core Skylake-X processor.

Meanwhile, AMD is planning to announce its top-end 16-core Ryzen processor and X399 platform in the third quarter to compete for the gaming market.

As for the 14nm-based Coffee Lake-based processors, Intel will initially release several K-series Core i7/i5/i3 processors and its Z370 chipsets in August, and will release more CPUs as well as H370, B360 and H310 chipsets at the end of 2017 or early 2018.

How is AMD trying to compete for the gaming market with the 16-core Ryzens? That line is BS imo.

For the rest. Good developement. Finally some movement at Intel. Very Happy

Quick question, why does it say 4 cores and 4 threads? Doesn't this i5 have Hyperthreading? I thought all >i3 had it. Confused

No desktop i5 ever had HT, they're just plain quadcores.

Notebook i5s are dualcores with HT.

What difference does HT do?

Im curious to how the dual core i5 in my new macbook stacks up to my old 2500k, or are they too different for a meaningful comparison?

Also, i was under the impression that dual core was "out" or "old", do dual core cpu`s use significantly less power and that`s why they put them in notebooks or what?

HT, hyper threading, is a technology that creates two virtual cores from one real core, effectively giving the system the illusion of having 2 real threads instead of just one. Of course, the virtual core is not as efficient as ressources are shared, but gives a nice boost in applications that utilize the threads.

So dualcore with HT = 4 working threads.

The dualcore in your macbook will probably not be as fast as your old 2500K since 4 real cores are faster than 2 real cores + 2 virtual cores. The i5 in the macbook will not clock as high either, since it needs to be efficient. But some IPC improvements since then will still give it enough power for you to not notice a major difference.

Dualcores obviously use less power. But there are qudcores in notebooks aswell. These need to be binned especially for efficiency though and subsequently become quite expensive.

I wouldn't say dual cores are obsolete, it depends on what you intend to run. Some heavy AAA games need a lot of processing power and take advantage of 4 cores but generally you are fine with a dual core. I mean, you get your value for the money they cost.

Two years ago I bought a rather cheap i3 4170 and I am very satisfied with its performance in games, emulators and chess computing. It is a dualcore with HT.

Specifications of Intel’s Core-X i9 and i7 series supposedly leaked

https://videocardz.com/69457/specifications-of-intels-core-x-i9-and-i7-series-supposedly-leaked

I wonder if the i9 will be priced on a similar level as the Ryzen 7. Or if Intel will yet again charge moonprices for it.

Dat i7 with only 4 threads though. Laughing

Well AMD is working on a 48 core Ryzen processor although if that's something that'll reach consumers or just for businesses is another matter I suppose but I wonder if these i9's won't be the more expensive even so.

I can definitively see the i9 7900 series on the x299 or whatever that motherboard will be called be in the four digit price range at least.

http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/amd_zen_enterprise_roadmap_shows_48_core_cpus_in_2018.html

In any case it'd be nice with some more active competition between AMD and Intel again. Smile

cores are not that important for home use Wink

the 7820x looks nice though if those values are real that might be the sweet spot for the upcoming years and if intel doenst fuck up things and if it will be priced reasonably (which it must be to compete with amd in that region) they will easily defeat the ryzens with that thing cause intel cores are always stronger. it will a question of the price, if its placed around amds 1700x, so lets say 380-400 euros it will be very nice and means they have to lower the prices for the i7 too and intel cant hold the high prices anymore, they were ok but with ryzen on the market they have to go lower. if its in the 420 euros its ok too, those 40 euros more than a 1700x should be worth it. the bigger i9s though will be around 1000 euros for sure
