Top 100 RPGs of All Time

Quote:
Role-playing games have a long and fascinating history. From its humble tabletop origins, the RPG has grown and evolved over the years into the most dominant and ambitious game genre, boasting a catalog as critically acclaimed as it is diverse. The best RPGs embrace a rich storytelling tradition as well as deep and engaging gameplay to create universes that are as exciting to explore as they are thrilling to quest and do battle in. And we’ve sunk hundreds — sometimes even thousands — of hours immersing ourselves in those incredible universes, whether that be stunning high fantasy kingdoms full of knights and dragons, exciting sci-fi realms brimming with possibilities, or even extraordinary versions of our own world.

But which RPGs are the best of the best? Which RPGs were influential enough to lead the rest, or bold enough to question the mold in new and exciting ways? Which RPGs gave us the richest characters, worlds, and stories — experiences we’ll never forget? IGN got its biggest RPG fans in a room to find out. Below are the Top 100 RPGs of All Time.

The main elements we examined:

- Story (Is it compelling, well-written, or uniquely told?)
- Presentation (Is its sound, music, and/or visual style particularly strong?)
- Character progression (Is there satisfying decision-making when it comes to building a character, choosing a combat style, or making other decisions in the game world?)
- Combat (Is it fun? Innovative? Does it ask the player to make interesting choices?)
- Systems (Is there an interesting dynamic between its various meta systems?)

Because the RPG is a particularly diverse and hard-to-define genre, it was important for us to nail down exactly what qualifies as an “RPG.”

For the purposes of this list, we defined an RPG as a game that includes:

- Persistent character progression (including player-exposed stats)
- Combat that is a significant part of the experience
- Choices and consequences
- Story
- Exploration
- Character building and customization

By their definition of RPG, everything that has any sort of leveling up and/or skill selection is an rpg these days. CoD multiplayer and most modern fps multiplayer should be included as well I guess ...

Divinity: Original Sin #90

Dragon Age Inquisition #89

Fuck off IGN and goodbye to yet another bs list of theirs.

To be honest tho, all "top lists" suck dick anyway.

You can't make a list that works for everyone, it's simply impossible. These lists are useless, I'm not even going to read through them.

Yup, some people will think that #100 on that list is better than #1 on that list - I don't know what games are at those positions specifically, but that's the point: everyone has preferences, and giving a fixed list is meaningless.

I think from now on, maybe the best thing to do would be to simply completely ignore any such list - not give them the attention they don't deserve.

If the lenght means something the first place isn't PST, BG2 or any other of the amazing classics. The Witcher 3 is probably first and Skyrim in Top 10-15 because why the hell not.

Pokemon and Diablo 2 before Witcher 3 for best RPG, lol wtf.

But i'm positively surprised they have so many games from the PSX/SNES era in there.

Didn't keep up with the list, only browsed directly to top 3.

Absolutely agree with 1 and 2, pure RPG perfection and a huge chunk of my gaming childhood there.

Fuck Baldur's Gate though, never did get into those.

Meh, who cares about some stupid eurotrash rpg, Dialbo 2 is where the true choices and gameplay lie!
Cool Face

( if you haven't already check out Project ReGoth by the guy who made the dx11 renderer for G1 and G2.. It's an open source implementation of ZenGine. You can even play it in a browser, official G1 demo as sample: http://gothic-dx11.de/gothic-js/REGoth.html )

Nice to see no Fallout 3 or 4 on the list, while 1,2 and New Vegas made it Smile

What a weird mashup. RPG is such a generic term, these games in this list are totally different genres.

Pokemon, Diablo 2, World of Gaycraft, Dark Souls, snes jrpgs, Skyrim, Darkest Dungeon, EVE Online ... what in the actual fuck is even going on here? Laughing

Why don't the IGN derps try role-playing as some serious games journalists for once?

Good thing in this list you didn't need to go through a ton of pages for this one. It's all on one page and there's a handy list on the left on the page as well which is where this was copied from. Rolling Eyes

That being said, as usual this list is horseshit.

Woops thanks for the clarification. The day this was posted there was only 1/4 of the list up and I assumed they were going to multi-page it. On topic, while I never agree with these lists I still enjoy seeing them as sometimes they cause nostalgia replays or point out something I missed.
