Remedy have simply lost their identity in my opinion, perhaps permanently. Okay The cinematization process started to show itself with Alan Wake (which I still enjoyed quite a lot, despite the cheap/badly-written story), but reached its climax with Quantum Break that brought the merging of television and gaming to a whole new level of non-interactivity, automatization and passiveness.

I'm not sure what you guys remember about Remedy but I think the biggest problem is just that. They haven't released anything new in ages.

As for the cinematization process I think that is pretty much what defines Remedy's style-
Max Payne 1 - comic book style with a dark/film noir atmosphere
Max Payne 2 - a different iteration on that
Alan Wake pretty much working with the power of fiction + in-game shows with various attempts at breaking the fourth wall
Quantum Break - essentially moving some of those in-game cinematic style of storytelling, inside the main game

As for Max Payne 3, cut Rockstar some slack, they managed to refine what Remedy had in place and the writing was not that bad - I still manage to get a good laugh when I remember the vent shaft not being able to withstand his American physique Smile

Oh yeah....and they're all damn linear which is in line with Remedy's style of storytelling.

Does anyone even remember the Intel tech demo for Alan Wake in which they showed the sandbox capabilities of the engine? Did they ever make use of that outside the driving sections (point A to point B)?

While I missed the noir style in MP3, and I felt like it should've been titled differently, really, I still enjoyed the game immensely. Gameplay was top notch, story was pretty dark and really quite good. It also looked solid and ran like a charm even on the shit can I had for a PC back then.

At the same time, I'm really struggling to enjoy Quantum Break, which I'm currently in the middle of. I was really interested in it, really wanted to play it, liked everything Remedy did up until now. But Quantum Break... I don't know. Something just feels off about it. I'm halfway through the game and story-wise it failed to capture my interest so far. It feels as generic as humanely possible - typical, run-of-the-mill time travel story, with mediocre and rather two-dimensional characters and quite an uninspired setting. I'm certainly expecting some twists to happen in the second part of the game, but I don't think it's gonna be enough to redeem what I've experienced so far. I just don't care about it all - especially characters - enough for that to happen.

Now, if gameplay was fine, the narrative would maybe suffice, but it's not. It feels shallow as hell and I'm sad to say i'm just not enjoying it all that much. The TV show hybrid thingy also seems to be a bad idea. When I want to play something, I want to play it, not be forced to watch a really, REALLY mediocre, badly acted, full length TV series to progress the story.

And then there's the technical side, which is just gruesome, to be blunt. For some incomprehensible reason, even when the game runs at 50-60 FPS, it feels like 15. And for all that, it doesn't even look all that well, which is a double slap in the face.

Soo... yeah. Sadly, whatever Remedy's cooking up next, I'm going to take it with a huge dose of scepticism. Especially considering they're using the same piece of shit of an engine again.

Disagree, qb had a phenomenal story, some great artistic design and it was a great experience. Sadly you could tell it was really rushed and they had to cut a chunk out.

Based on the image with the clues that wasn't posted here, I guess if your preorder Control you get free copies of Max Payne 1 & 2.

Remedy has signed a deal with a major publisher to fund its next 2 games, both part of the same franchise, while retaining their IPs: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/remedy-signs-deal-with-major-publisher-for-two-next-gen-games/

Quote:
Control studio Remedy Entertainment has signed agreements with “a major publisher” for the company’s next two unannounced video games.

The first project is a “AAA multi-platform game” already in pre-production, the company said on Thursday, while the second is a “smaller-scale” project set in the same franchise.
Both projects are being developed on Remedy’s proprietary Northlight game engine and tools.

The games will be released for next-gen consoles and PC in “the next few years,” Remedy said. The Finnish studio will retain ownership of the unannounced games’ IP, while revenue will be split with the publisher.

Alan Wake 2 and a spin-off? Alice Wake? Razz Barry Wheeler? Cool

Publisher revealed. It's Epic. https://www.gameinformer.com/2020/03/25/epic-games-announces-multiplatform-publishing-partnerships-with-studios-behind-control

Epic Games has announced it will publish new titles by Remedy Entertainment, Playdead, and Gen Design as a part of a new multiplatform publishing initiative. According to Epic Games, developers retain 100 percent of all intellectual property and creative control of their work and will benefit from 50/50 profit sharing. Epic also touts it will cover to up 100 percent of development costs including developer salaries, quality assurance, localization, marketing, publishing costs, and more.

Sounds like a good deal.

They will definitely double down on epic exclusivity now.

Most probably, but it might still be of limited duration. And since Epic will also be publishing on consoles, 2/3rds of the platforms are unrestricted, so the developers are not being locked down to just 1 revenue stream. It sounds like a good deal on paper, especially if it combines with additional discounts if you use Unreal (which Remedy won't).

It's basically a platform exclusivity deal. And a very good one at that for remedy, so I do not wonder why they accepted that. Basically developer whatever you want and even if it does not sell you won't be in debt. I don't know about that bitterness though, Steam made billions over the years without developing such relationships with the devs...

Pumpy: well this normal publishing deal between dev and publisher .... Steam never really tried to be a publisher , they went to be digital makretplace.

as for the Epic's publishing deal
Quote:
Developers retain 100% of all intellectual property and full creative control of their work. Epic Games Publishing will cover up to 100% of development costs, from developer salaries to go-to-market expenses such as quality assurance, localization, marketing, and all publishing costs.

It will have 50-50 profit sharing. Epic said developers will earn a fair share for their work. Once costs are recouped, developers earn at least 50% of all profits.

it doesnt really sound all that great imo (Despite PR and jurnous boasting its amazing)

Getting 0 profits after launch until it breaks even ...sounds pretty risky, especially for your next project and support of the released one

That's how all publishing deals for AAA are as far as I know, costs first have to be recouped.

Remedy had so much potential in the beginning, looking to become a superstar like Rockstar. But after Max Payne 2 they failed to live up to expectations although Alan Wake became somewhat of a hit (although it took 2 years for the PC port to arrive due to MS using the title as an exclusive to sell their consoles).

Personally I only really liked 4 of their games:
Death Rally (original 1996 version, it was fun @ lan parties)
Max Payne 1 & 2 (superb classics)
Control (I really liked this game; a strong story driven mystery/sci fi semi-action game)

Still waiting for the Control expansions "The Foundation" and "AWE". The new game mode "Expeditions" wasn't what I wanted.
