For some reason I think all this hype will turn into a disaster. I mean, there was a preview in PC gamer not so long ago, and they said that even though the game is almost finished it's still buggy. And in such an ambitious project, many bugs may occur that will spoil the game...only think about Xenus, or even Bloodlines. I think that a good beta testing is the only thing that can save a game that sounds good, to really been good...IMO!

No it doesnt...
Anyway @ Clevesa:
Bloodlines turned out to be the best RPG last year (I was overwhelmed by it) even though it had so much bugs and freezes.
I highly doubt Stalker will be in the same position.. This is indeed one the years most anticipated game, and with a strong community and a good publisher in the back then this is condemned to be a succes.

Yeah,Mutantius, Bloodlines was a good game, but in terms of gameplay... If you think about it's performance it was really bad. In a game like STALKER, perfromance is an important part if the game is slow like shit, then it's going to ruin the whole experience. I do hope that your right, and that the publisher won't rush the devs, and they will create a solid game.

On Topic (I think.. the russain got me a little lost) ::
I was a big fan of Half Life 2, in my opinion it was certainly one of the better games released in 2005, if not the best (well.. maybe not..).. The engine wasnt *that* bad either, as for bugs, sure I saw a few, but they didnt stop the gameplay with some other games I've played in the past. I do think SIN was made with the correct engine..
As for STALKER, its been in development so long it better be bloody stable by now, but I wont be holding my breathe, I'm sure that even with the major amounts of development, this will no doubt dissapoint on many levels.. I guess we will see when its released.

Dunno, it ran on medium with my 5900XT :S and it ran with a steady FPS all the way.

I agree with Mutantius there... I think HL2 was running on a good engine, and it was well optimized. Actually, even in the biggest fire fights I didn't have any slowdowns at all.

I think single player games run fine on source engine. Multiplayer games on the other hand- HL2: DM, CS:S, DOD:S,etc have problems or at least valve screws them up whenever it updates them. I see this every day on steam forums. One small update and a big mess might occur. The most recent one was the steam 64bit support update. People complain about huge fps dropps since this update for no reason.
At least for CS:S I've seen so many problems in this 1.5 year. Valve made the big step to build its own engine and it faces now the problems of learning how to fix them and at the same time adding new features like HDR, film grain, motion blair, etc. I love their games(at least most of them) but it will take a while until they make source a stable bug free engine.

The biggest problem with source is that it can only handle very small areas, all the frequent loading totaly destroyed the immersion in both HL2 and VBL imo, which was too bad, both are excellent games otherwise. I really hope STALKER will not have this problem and will be better optimized for large areas (which i think it is)..
VBL was less optimized because they used an unfinished version of the engine, this according to the developers.. And they didnt get any good support from Valve either. Perhaps just a bad excuse, but that's what they've said in interviews..

Stalker will be like morrowind in terms of loading and so. Whenever you transit between "areas" it will be a loading time, otherwise it will be streamed in the background. And if I am not mistaken every "area" will be about 2 square km.
The Source engine is IMHO very good if you consider all the details and the physics added. Compare that with the Doom3 engine (that some people still will fanboy until death) that doesn't have real physics, sucks very bad at out door rendering. If it were up to me I would say that the total impression of the Source beats the one from Doom3.
VBL was kinda badly optimized yes. But remember that Troika games never have created a game with good optimization...
I think they didi the correct choice with using Source but they should've put more time into learning how to use it properly. If it weren't because they got bankrupt a few more patched could've solved some problems.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!
