Moonlight 4/10

Waaaaaaaaay too slow for its own good. Story wasn't strong. Naomie Harris was great some other performances were good. A forgettable movie. Shame really, had high expectations.

Brothers grimsby thing 3/10

Some laughs surrounded by a pile of manure.

TMNT 1/10

Holy shit that was bad, and I wasn't expecting much to begin with. Dudebros, bitches and derps seems to be what we get when they want their films to be 'totally radical'. Razz

I meant the last one, whatever it's called... couldn't be bothered with looking the title up so I just went with TMNT as in: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

memento

now i havent seen this for a loooooooooooooooooooooong time, and so naturally when youre younger and watch these kinds of films, you remember them as 'weird thrillers that were ok and had a few funny bits'...

i guess it wasnt until now that i can really appreciate it. I hadnt seen it in a while so figured id grab it for a quick watch and delete movie for my sunday movie-night, but... what can i say? its certainly an interesting story and i really enjoyed the challenging experience of the film. Not 'oh god its so hard' kinda challenge, but a sorta 'invest yourself in the puzzle' kinda challenge... it was neat, i enjoyed seeing one piece, keeping it in mind along with the puzzles id solved from the later sequences, and then waiting to see how the next piece leads us there. Getting to see
 Spoiler:

Really neat film, that im going to keep in my movie archive pile.

Only thing that really bugs me, is why the heck he stole the guys clothes... and if im honest, i didnt really like the ending where
 Spoiler:

I felt that bit was the weakest part of the film.. it happened too fast and seemed awkwardly done and a bit out of character... I know people will disagree, but I really feel it wasnt done well, and felt like it was shoved in very quickly just to 'create' the clues that sent us on the path we see in the movie... a plot point just to quickly explain and neatly wrap up the well-written story that we've just seen.

Ghost in the Shell - 7.5/10 - Good movie, they nailed the world building and atmosphere. Action could have been more though, they were trying to cram a long movie into a 2 hour one sadly. With a proper script, one that wouldn't treat the audience like a bunch of morons, this could have been brilliant. I hope one day someone makes a proper Deus Ex movie.

The Magnificent Seven - 5/10

"The magnificence of the titular septet is barely discernible in this unwarranted update of the 1960 Western that was itself a remake of the 1954 Japanese classic Seven Samurai." Laughing

A remake of a remake of a Japanese remake, it seems not only horror movies and sci fi come from Japan but old western's as well Laughing I assume porn is also japanese then

Oculus Creed: Assassin's Manzana Latina - 4,5/10

The very definition of hopeless movie, but even if I expected nothing, it still managed to let me down xD. For some awkward reason the characters all felt like lifeless empty robots with zero personality, surpassing even Ubisoft itself which is an achievement per se, and the story was filled with the most banal aspects of the franchise, only with the nonsense factor boosted up, and a silly extra real-time Animus for cinematic purposes and for showing Fassbender's pectorals.

The cinematography was very inconsistent as well, it had a few nice Eagleview(tm)-powered vistas but the combat itself often felt cheap (live action quality CGI), made even worse by the fact that there was nothing to make up for it. If most remarkable quote of the movie is I'm hungry, then something isn't quite right. Requiescat in pace.

Traditional storytelling, nothing spectacular, but overall well made. The story and excellent acting performances keep you watching.

rewatched aeon flux last night... yeah.. wasnt great, but it got me thinking..

a: charlize theron as the major in ghost in the shell would have been phenomenal if it'd happened 10 or so years ago... i mean i really like her, so honestly i wouldnt care if she'd been cast NOW, either... damn shes great... she would have been SO much better than the fucktard they ended up casting.

b: i think its time someone took another shot at an aeon flux movie. I dont really recall it having anything particularly great story-wise going for it, but i do remember the intriguing ambiguity of the characters, their motivations, and the crazy world and style of the thing - if someone with some talent took a shot at it, made it a bit more coherent and consistent, id be totally down for another aeon flux movie.

psh, ill see your crazy feminist movie, and raise you metallica through the never.

at 80 minutes long, it was not only too long for what it was, but it FELT way longer than it was, and at the end of it i realized i dont like metallica as much as i thought i did, and the ending left me confused and angry.

there were two parts to it... there was a drug-fueled fantasy bit of nonsense that was basically a mishmash of... stuff, that was neither exciting or intriguing, that i would have loved to have been expanded on (or even have some kind of substance!), and a really well-made staged concert (where the meat of the film was) - those sequences were well done, but i wish they'd have had different songs. Very lazily put together and a wholly unsatisfying ending to what was clearly an attempt at a surreal narrative experience.

Far as im concerned, if you want to do something of a story/band crossover, Imaginaerum shits all over this in every possible way, by not only managing to be ABOUT a band, and meaningfully incorporate the music, but actually tie it into a surrealistic trip with a pretty decent story.

basically what im saying is its been 2 weeks and im still fucking angry about assassins creed.

Aftermath

Man... I really feel for Arnie. I totally understand why this didn't get a theatrical release... it really doesn't have mass market appeal and would make very little money in cinemas...

BUT, I still kinda enjoyed it. I love this new side of Arnie... Voice will always be an issue, but damn he can emote. He was really good at this, he felt so damn genuine, and I've seen far far worse acting from many actors people would traditionally label as "proper" actors as opposed to viewing Arnie as just an action star. He definitely can act.

Problem is, that it seems only poorly written low budget film producers are willing to take a chance on the man in this kind of role. And that's the whole problem with the film. It's super slow and ultimately has nothing in it EXCEPT for the really solid character portrayals. There's just not much you can do with a story about a guy dealing with grief, and a guy dealing with guilt. Neither men can do anything EXCEPT grieve, which is both to the films detriment, and also it's strength in a way. It portrays the characters realistically to a fault; you won't get to see Arnie figuring out a puzzle, or making plans, or being a detective, or getting into court battles or anything... As it would always be in life, unlike most films of this type, the characters are all bystanders. It's makes for a slow film with not much dynamically happening, but I can't blame it for that.

Oh, I will say I LOVED the ending,
 Spoiler:

So yeah.. Slow film, not much happens, but Arnie really is fantastic. It's Maggie all over again, really. Strong dramatic performance from Arnie, wrapped up in a film that just doesn't have any meat to it. I really hope eventually someone gives the man a shot at a proper film that let's him show off his dramatic abilities - he certainly has the capacity if a strong script and director are guiding him.

Split - The only good thing about it was the cameo at the end. It's a step above today's average horror movie (which isn't saying much), but it's regardless in many ways too shoddily written for me to enjoy. Good performance by McAvoy but since throwing a bunch of money at a good actor isn't a big accomplishment, it doesn't get much points for that. 4.5/10

Brimstone - 4.5/10 - Feels like a snuff film throughout, which I guess some people might enjoy, but not me. Also shoddily written and too long for what it is.

Kong Skull Island - 6/10

Really disappointed with the movie, Peter Jacksons King Kong is way better... IMO.

Sleepless - 6/10

Some great action scenes, decent thriller movie

Assassins Creed (rewatched) - 8/10

Faithful to the games, hope theres a sequel

Split - 8/10

Great performance by James Mcavoy, never lost faith in Shyamalan... he is back.

Mine - 7/10

Really interesting story and great performance by the lead actor

MacBeth 2015 (rewatched) - 9/10

Fassbender is one of the best actors, and Justin Kurzel and is team are really good

Life - 7.5/10

Nice horror/scfi flick, but the characters are really "thin", but is a unique take on "alien" type of movie

Ghost in The Shell - 7/10

Fuck man, its about time someone make a Deus Ex movie with Adam Jensen, just call Keanu Reeves.
About this movie, it was a letdown, nice universe and cgi, but the best scenes are already in the first trailer... i was expecting more from the story and a lot more from the action sequences.

There seems to be a genre of horror movies that focuses on explicit, disturbing depictions of killing, torture and rape. All horror movies feature killing but these set of movies stand out by trying to be very explicit and very disturbing in their depictions.

And although I cannot draw direct parallels between Brimstone and a movie like I Spit On Your Grave, for me it evoked the same feelings watching it. I think it was the implication and theme of

@BearishSun

I don't like films that have nothing to offer except for gore and stuff.I actually don't like gory films.

It wasn't the case here. Unlike I spit on your grave and similar films it was tastefully done and it wasn't the main focus of this film. I think it was a great drama dealing with an uncomfortable topic. Performances were top notch. The young girl who played the main heroine when she was 13-14 years old was outstanding. .Soundtrack and cinematography were great too. The writing got a bit silly in the end but overall it was good.

But, hey, to each his own Cool
