It's way too harsh, IMO, but that's the Codex for you. So elitarist and oldskool it's a wonder they even publish their stuff on the Internet, instead of being a paper fanzin. He does mention some of the stuff that irritated me, however.

Not too surprising coming from Junta he is a total cunt, wish Darth Roxor would have made the review he would have at least reviewed the fucking game instead of rambling about cobblestones, PnP and KS lies.

Yeah, that's definitely the best way to play the game. I played as Nano and just used Int to force/talk my way through the entire game. It actually becomes a problem later on, because it indeed is as mentioned in that codex review - at some point you just can't fail no matter what you do.
Game makes you pick up some combat skills anyway, but I never put any additional points into them. It's not nesecessary anyway, since leveling Int and its Edge will make you hit stuff without problems while also adding huge amounts of damage (my main hit stuff for over 40 with that basic offensive spell you get at level 1 - even more if he pushed enemies into stuff), in case a fight actually happens.
Besides, there are only a couple of ability choices/tier and only 4 tiers, so it's not like there's a huge variety of builds. You really lose nothing by playing the game without fighting.

Quote: | This update focuses primarily on bug fixes and other tweaks and improvements. Those of you experiencing a number of issues, particularly with combat freezes, should find many of those problems reduced or eliminated entirely.
In a future update, we will be releasing additional game content free for all Torment players: a new companion, Oom, and the Voluminous Codex, an expanded encyclopedia covering game world information, lore, and characters. Design and writing is in progress on those, and we'll have more information to share in the coming weeks.
And now, here's the release notes...
Highlights
Fixed a large number of freezes that would happen in various states.
Numerous performance optimizations.
Addendum text should now be appearing on item descriptions. Many dozens of items now have more details depending on your lore skills and other factors!
Fixed an issue that was preventing party members from bantering. Party members should now be much more talkative!
Updated a number of crisis sequences to rebalance a number of enemies. In some situations, it will make combat proceed more quickly in encounters that were sluggish.
Numerous fixes and improvements to movement grid, pathing, and AI. This should prevent issues where the game would hang as combat could get stuck in numerous situations.
Several quest and conversation fixes.
Inspiring Presence and other looping sound effects have been removed

I've got a question about this one; maybe some of you who finished or played this could help. So, say I enjoyed games like Tyranny or Beyond Divinity, but one important factor for me was combat difficulty and customizing/improving the (combat) power of my party. How much different is Torment in this respect?
In particular, I've heard that nearly all fights here are avoidable. But then I guess I wouldn't really find any purpose/enjoyment in improving the combat effectiveness of my characters, right? Doesn't this also mean that there's no real notion of "difficulty" here... that it's mostly like an adventure book?
I'm not trying to criticize the game, just trying to assess whether I'd enjoy it.

Completely different. Combat is rare, badly done, rather easy and not very interesting overall. I guess you could plan some "builds", but there's only a couple of selectable abilities per tier and only four tiers in total. Not to mention the fact that you'll fight maybe... 15-20 times in the entire game? That's if you're looking for it and use force in every situation, because it can usually be avoided. And even that might be an overstatement. I think I had less than 10 fights during a 40 hour playthrough. Definitely like an adventure book, more or less.

Game is exactly like a choose your own adventure book, the combat is not only avoidable, but it is also extremely easy, especially the later in the game you are. There isn't much variety or customization and the cyphers are kind of pointless for the most part. The sad part is that unlike a good choose your own adventure book, pretty much everything you do is inconsequential since you get to chose your ending regardless by talking to the big bad, kind of like me3.

I would not say that game is like adventure book, more like adventure game, when there is no combat, with skill based dialogues.
But they are pieces that are exactly adventure book (the meres).

Moving Bob's post to the Numenera lands:
Quote: |
Quote: | This update - which is also packed in with our 1.1.0 patch - brings Oom, a brand-new companion with its own unique questline, plus additional features including the Voluminous Codex, game balance updates, and more!
Highlights
- New Companion: Oom. Oom is a new stretch goal character who you will discover on your journey through the Ninth World. Oom features its own companion quest, "Servant of the Tides", its own unique abilities for use in combat and exploration, and interactions with various characters throughout the game.
- Added the Voluminous Codex. This new stretch goal feature unlocks lore and character entries as you explore the game world.
- Added a new user interface element to the Inventory Screen which makes it easier to view companion attitudes toward the Last Castoff.
- Added a new user interface element to the Common Panel which better messages the Last Castoff's current Legacy.
- Various balance improvements to Crisis gameplay throughout the game.
- Various balance improvements to exploration gameplay, especially in the later stages of the game.
- Cypher Sickness initialization is now delayed until after Equipment initialization. This should prevent issues where loading a save file where equipment was preventing a cypher explosion would cause input to freeze up.
- Remove all non-gameplay Fettles from companions when they're removed from the party. This should prevent certain freezes from occurring.
- Players can now advance to Tier 5 and Tier 6, allowing players to spend their Experience Points more in the later game. This also allows the Last Castoff to gain abilities from other character types.
- Added zoom in/out key binding to the Options Menu. This allows players without mouse wheels to remap the zoom functions.
- Numerous small UI fixes.
- Numerous small quest fixes. |

Well this game died a sudden death. I own it but have yet to play it - is it really that bad that people stopped giving a fuck a mere month after release?

It's a shame - I played it for an hour, found that the writing was off and stopped. I never play games such as these on release anyway for various reasons but the writing put me off the way they tried too hard to be prosaic. When you start the game and have half a book to read through ... yeah I can see why people find it dull. I was just hoping it would pick up a little after that.

I believe that its very niche nature coupled with the fact that it had the difficult (almost impossible really ) task to keep up with a masterpiece of narration like Torment definitely contributed to the lukewarm financial results, both the newcomers and old fans were disappointed in the end. The game is still inside my big backlog sack though so I can't elaborate..yet!

I tried it twice for several hours, it's a shame that the writing is so tiresome (and not because I played it late in the evening) while the setting, world and characters look so interesting. It's like the writers were payed by the word.

It's a good game, but not for everyone tastes. Not even in old school crowd.
Finished it twice. But haven't tried with with latest patches and new companion. Just too many other things to play.
