I wonder if the TW system would work for a futuristic setting - or even W40K.

Not with their current unit formations.

Modern warfare is squad based and not line infantry like. So they would have to change that entirely and I don't see that happening.

I don't see why not! The ranged combat in Empire/Napoleon was superb, I think they're still on the same engine.

If by system you mean the campaign stuff then yea it could. But if its the battle, it won't. Simply because if we are talking about small scale battles, DOW2 was better representation of it. If we are talking about larger scale, something like Wargame would be better suited for it. TW is best when the battle revolves around slow moving formations, 40k is too fast for it. You will have to overhaul the mechanics so much that it's not even a TW game anymore at that point.

The problem is not the ranged combat, it is the unit formations. In a modern or futuristic setting, I can't imagine a concept where formations of soldiers or robots would seem believable.

I'd rather have them proper AI for once and getting rid of these stupid super aritifical difficulty methods. Like aritifically boosting AI's bonuses and stats. Where, in TW:WH for example, an AI controlled Bretonnian peasant is boosted so much in terms of stats that they almost become equal to a high tier player recruited unit.

I just can't get over that anymore with TW, which sucked all of the fun out of these games for me.

many countries still have "riot police" that have line, column ,square and so on formations ,also infantry is still a real part of the army even now,in most countries .We usually play some special forces in games(marines,SEAL,SAS) and they are squad based because their missions differ and they don't for example defend or attack cities, villages or do huge scales mission that requires many operatives.Even so yeah i don't think we will see modern warfare

I think all game devs in general more or less gave up the idea of making a complex and "thinking" AI. It's too hard to make and not worth it when you can get away with it in either making the AI "cheat" and/or boosting its numbers. Which is very sad considering how 4-5 years ago everyone thought we reached the peak for graphical evolution and only thing left to improve in gaming was the AI.

I wonder if it has to do with some kind of a CPU limited tradeoff?

Warhammer's geography is pretty much based on real world Laughing

They have planned for three Total War: Warhammer games from the start. The next WH:TW game is going to be High Elves, Dark Elves, and Lizardmen based on the copyright registration documents. There is also speculation that Tomb Kings may be put in south of the Greenskin area, if they expand the map south to have the south American and African equivalent areas.

The Total War reddit has speculated that they are also working on a historical based Total War, to be announced later this year.

I know you're not into Warhammer, but I just to make it clear why it can't be a Mayan structure, but most definitely a Warhammer one.

If you look at the top of the step pyramid, there are some horn like shapes on it. That's not how the Mesoamerican pyramids look like in real life. However the Lizardmen of Warhammer does have those horns and spiky tops. If you google image Lizardmen, you'll see the one distinct difference between the fantasy pyramid and the real life influence is that one aspect.

It was a very clever image to use to tease the new expansion, because while we know it's going to be Warhammer with Lizardmen and therefore hyped, we just don't know if it's "South American" or "Africa", which would determine whether we'll see Dark Elves, or Tomb Kings along with the Lizardmen.

I don't know, but to me it seems rather dumb to make the next Total War game Warhammer themed again.

It's just ~1 year old, and also has a nice amount of paid DLCs.

Personally i wouldn't want to pay them money again because of that.

Sure, but I just want to base my own predictions on official material, not leaks or page source text, etc. Just saying base on the background, it could be both.

Yea I get it. I want a historic Total War too. But damn Warhammer sold really well for them apparently.

They are in the middle of development of another historical TW as far as I know. It was always planned for there to be three Warhammer TWs back to back over the next couple of years.

High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen and although not officially confirmed, they shown a rat with growing red eyes.... Surely that has to be Skaven as expected.

But the key things they mention is what makes me really hyped for this.

-No more racial limitation on capture settlements.

-Coop with the same race.

-Grand campaign map release for free shortly after launch.

-Not just Lustria as I thought it would be at launch, they have the Elves' homes as well.

-Larger rosters.

-2017!

Even so, Chaos was free for a week after launch, you'll have plenty of time to read all the reviews and watch all the let's plays to make up your mind. It was still a scumy move however.
