This was being developed as a WB movie but they dropped it, but they also allowed the creatives to shop it around and every studio showed interest but Netflix is said to be the one that will get it (it's not official but insiders are confident). Netflix will buy it for $40-50M and they want to start production in June.

Less than a couple of months ago the producer said "It’s definitely for adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating", although I'm not sure why as the anime wasn't super brutal.. but this director seems to be making R films so..

It looks fine but it's not Death Note. They've fucked up the main characters so much..Especially Light. There are some good comments under this youtube video detailing all the bad changes netflix has made.
