Dolby Vision is some improvement over the existing HDR implementation, thus why it's either HDR or the (better?) Dolby Vision at least until the HDR specs catch up a bit, I don't fully understand either of them though when it comes to the actual tech but for this game Dolby should be the superior but it needs a display that can support this as well plus it would seem it also needs a display driver capable of it.

Few more thoughts:
I spent a few hours exhausting the initial content before going to Eos, and I have to say I think the writing is quite good, so far.
I read every Codex entry - and the whole thing seems like actual thought went into it. Much like the original Mass Effect Codex.
The Andromeda Initiative concept, while slightly implausible, seems well supported. The characters seem more down-to-earth than the typical Bioware in-your-face-look-at-me types. The exception would be that annoying Asari you meet on Eos (Peebee whatever) - but I quite like Cora, Liam and Vetra.
That said, I hated most of the ME2 and ME3 characters - many of which were WAY over-the-top. So, that's very much personal preference stuff.
However, yes, Addison looks like shit and is a terrible character - but she's the exception.
However, I must admit that the hair-color on NPCs can be QUITE ridiculous. Orange and Yellow hair everywhere. Not sure what they were thinking here. They definitely need to tweak the skin tones for a lot of them.
The stuff you find while exploring, including audio logs, datapads and "ghostly residues" are relatively engaging.
But the strength lies in the gameplay - with the excellent combat and entertaining progression curve. Not sure about crafting yet, but it seems the "augmentations" might make it all worthwhile. I've yet to find an augmented weapon while exploring - and maybe it's only possible through crafting? That would make the feature useful, certainly.
I thought I would HATE the planet scanning, but I figured out their thoughts here. You're NOT supposed to spend ages scanning for trivial stuff. In fact, only 1-2 planets pr. system will have something - and that something is usually quite worthwhile.
The travel time is not a big deal, because you don't actually spend much time going back and forth. The starmap in itself is extremely visually attractive - and I find the whole thing quite immersive so far.
Certainly much, much better than anything in ME2 and ME3.
That said, it's still extremely early days - and I don't know how it will evolve.
But I really like it so far.

So, is there any good sci-fi in the writing of this game? You know what I mean, actually scientific stuff.
Are there any cosmological objects other than planets in the game? Pulsars, black holes, neutron stars, alien superstructures etc?

I have no idea what constitutes good writing for you.
So far, the writing is very reminiscent of Mass Effect in terms of science. Meaning, the writers obviously aren't scientists - but they've tried making the lore interesting and somewhat plausible.
I haven't played much - so I don't know what's coming, but the starmap is certainly full of all kinds of "cosmological" objects - and I've already seen nebulas, a black hole, "energy fields" and other stuff.

Mass Effect 1 had some good sci-fi in the lore. But this was mostly due to Karpyshyn I guess, who isn't there anymore.
Stargate SG-1 had some underappreciated good sci-fi writing. Like that Replicator planet where they activated a time-dilation device and it went wrong and instead the Replicators evolved much faster.

I love sci-fi myself, but I don't really know much about hard science. I mean, I loved Gravity because it was such a visceral and immersive movie - and I didn't give two shits about the science being off, and I hardly noticed because I was so into it.
So, it's very much from that perspective that I evaluate science fiction.
I mostly find hard science dull as dishwater - and movies like The Martian don't do much for me at all. I'm much more into stuff like Aliens or Event Horizon.
It's too early to judge the ME:A writing so far, but I see no indication that it will be significantly worse than anything in ME1-ME3.
In fact, I like some of it more than those games. But this can easily change.

https://www.videogamer.com/news/bioware-promises-to-strongly-support-me-andromeda-patching-lots-of-issues
Quote: | BioWare is looking into what elements of Mass Effect Andromeda need patching - including facial animations and the character creator - but is currently unable to make any promises on what exactly will be fixed, lead designer Ian Frazier has said on Twitter.
Regarding the facial animations, Frazier said: "We're looking at patching lots of issues and want to strongly support the game moving forward. I can't say more just yet."
In relation to the lack of options in the character creator, he wrote: "Can't promise anything yet, but we're currently evaluating various options for making it better."
He also responded directly to a request for stubble.
"No promises, but I've got it on the list of things we're looking at potentially fixing/adding for character creation," he wrote. |

I'd say it's almost always smarter to wait for the final edition on sale, but I'm not a very patient person when it comes to playing the games I want to play.
For Andromeda, I predict waiting at least a month or two for the initial patches would be very wise.
That said, I really haven't had much in the way of issues, so far.

Anyone have experience with game2dll site? It has the game for ~30€ though stating that it's not a cdley but an account (?) with the game on it. Sounds strange.
/edit: Hmm it seems it's sort of scam site. You get an account which is active for couple of days and then nothing...

'No promises.'
'No promises'.
'I can't promise anything'.
THEN WHY THE FUCK PUT SHIT LIKE THIS UP? This is one of my current pet hates about 'statements' from developers/publishers. If you 'can't promise' something, don't fucking TELL US about it.
'I can't promise anything, but we might be able to lay your carpet.'
'No promises, but we'll see about paying your salary this month.'
'Can't promise this, I'm just not that committed to anything that might not be possible.'
Fuck me. It's no wonder the world is in the state it is now.

This is a "business" characteristic applied worldwide on all sectors/aspects. Accountability is what they are afraid of most of the time due to litigation consequences. And if you take it on a personal level it's called integrity. Tough to find individuals, companies etc. with that trait nowadays.

It's just classic PR spin. It's not exactly new. They have to say something to acknowledge people being pissed off, but they can't commit to anything, otherwise they may end up costing themselves more money than is absolutely necessary.

The only thing that could be described as supermax is the size of my banana but thats another topic.
Lets concentrate on the vast space in Andromeda. The Tempest is a damn fine ship.

So this "masterpiece" has also microtransactions in the MP portion?
Quote: | Like many other AAA games, BioWare's just-released Mass Effect: Andromeda offers microtransactions for its multiplayer mode. Now that the game is available in the wild, pricing for its virtual currency, called Points, has emerged on digital storefronts such as the Xbox Store and the PlayStation Store.
Points can be spent on new multiplayer packs, which come with cosmetic items. Alternatively, multiplayer packs can be acquired through normal gameplay, so the microtransactions are more of a means to unlock the items more quickly.
Andromeda's Points are offered in bundles, starting with 500 for $5 and running up to 12,000 for $100. As always, EA/Origin Access subscribers on Xbox One and PC can save 10 percent on the prices.
Mass Effect: Andromeda Microtransaction Pricing:
500 Points -- $5
1,050 Points -- $10
2,150 Points -- $20
3,250 Points -- $30
5,750 Points -- $50
12,000 Points -- $100

Fyi, I never touched ME3 and I will never play this one even for a minute. I don't care if combat is good. I'm not putting myself in this "politically correct" agenda and I don't want it in videogames. I'm also a bit sad with the direction videogames take. I'll be 40 this year, gaming since 1983, unfortunately things are getting worse every year and all these stupid devs are ruining my hobby with the help ofc of all the stupid consumers/customers.
Let's hope some indie devs will continue to provide good games, though the Early Access scheme is damaging gaming imo.
