I enjoyed it over Zestiria, a lot, though the story does fall apart a bit and they do drag things out although overall it was a positive experience.
Gameplay mechanics aren't all too different although combat is now based around "souls" and balancing how you use these since collecting a large amount has various debilitating effects on the player but it is required to use some of the stronger abilities.
Ship is primarily used for fast travel but you do (eventually, quite a ways into the game.) get the means to traverse the land via a "hoverboard" for faster exploration and it will even instantly kill lower level encounters but it won't give you any rewards for dealing with them in this way.
(But it does solve one of the bigger annoyances in late-game with backtracking and dealing with weak mobs through every zone, Zestiria had a method for fast travel for this but it was expensive initially.)
Encounters once again scale depending on difficulty level so while you are heavily penalized as the difficulty level is increased it is the only way to get the better equipment rewards and you also want to use this to get a higher overall "grade" score after battle since the total sum of these will be used for NG+ similar to how the Lord of the Land blessings for Zestiria worked.
The side quests well if you plan to 100% the game you will probably need a guide, there's less content you can truly miss this time around but the way some of the quest conditions trigger is a bit vague and some only really trigger when you're almost done with the game standing near the final dungeon though you are allowed to go back and clear that stuff afterwards if you want. (And yeah there's a post-game dungeon again and it's, it's a pain. )
Story wise well I don't want to spoil anything but like I said it starts out nicely and tries to maintain a darker overall tone but it doesn't quite manage to keep it together through the entire game so things change around a bit and some plot details also get dragged out or how to say, game is already pretty lengthy as is but there is a fair bit of backtracking and re-visiting certain areas multiple times.
Spoiler: |
They also keep the mythos with the Shepherd and the Lord of Calamity while filling out the lore a bit though if you've played Zestiria you already know how some of this will end up.
(Near the end of Zestiria they just keep giving references to Berseria and much of that does get answered in this game which was a neat little touch.)
|
What else is there, I also liked that the dungeons were less ancient ruin in X different layouts and now almost each dungeon is a bit more unique as is the various overworld locations you explore and the city and town areas, a lot of time will be spent in battle though as there's encounters almost everywhere.
There are also ways to manipulate said encounters to make them more challenging or less challenging which if you take on multiple groups of enemies they get scaled up and can even include special foes but you do get some really nice rewards from this.
More bosses too even if some of them and some of the enemy types are re-used from Zestiria.
As far as the player party goes it takes a while (A long while, this is something of a theme.) before you assemble your full group though they have pretty varied abilities and skills though I wasn't a huge fan of Magilou though that's just how she is. (spoiler. -> )
Spoiler: |
How many times had she been broken again? 114 or so I think?
|
In regards to the party members you do have this time around they each have their quirks and personal motivation so while the game does try to show this as some sort of conflicted group of people it won't really affect combat and such though skits will bring it up numerous times as will cutscenes and other story events.
(They are pretty fleshed out.)
Overall length of the game is probably at least 40 hours if you're fast, probably more like 60 or above and if you plan to try and do everything that's easily some 100+ hours since there will be a lot of grinding.
Then there's the crafting system although it's not quite the same as Zestiria where you'll combine 99 items together into this one weapon kill them all or this one piece of armor to resist everything.
Also instead of blessings you have these "Potentite" stones which give passive bonuses as you complete them, this includes anything from being able to do certain things to unlocking higher difficulty levels or upgrading your items further.
(There's something like 50 or so in total and it will take some work to acquire all of them even if several will be found in the course of the story itself.)
Visually it's a bit dated but they do use mip-maps this time around so there's less flickering, post-process resolution, shadow resolution and a few other things are also running at a lower than native res (One of the things that TBFix can help with.) though it is higher than what Zestiria used, character models are fairly detailed but the environments are fairly sparsely populated and while there are more varied environments the overall texture quality has been reduced.
EDIT: It's difficult to write a good summary without going too far into spoiler territory or over explaining things that players might want to find out themselves while playing the game, probably a common issue with reviews in general but a JRPG or well RPG in general with some hundred hours or more of content can be difficult to go into more detail on without revealing plot info or how to say or some of the game mechanics or other systems.
All in all though I enjoyed the game and I liked the darker tone, Zestiria had it's moments (Not everything Sorey did had the intended effect after all.) but this takes it a bit further though they don't go over extreme with things like violence or what to use as a example either which well it might be more to avoid certain stricter ratings but it doesn't feel too forced either or how to say.
(And for being anime characters the facial expressions and emotions are pretty nice although animation quality overall is a bit stiff but it's serviceable.)

Any way to get TBFix to work with the cpy version?
It doesn't detect the game as installed.

Ah yeah I completely forgot about that bit.
There were a number of "safeguards" in TZFix to try and limit the projects functionality with non-legit versions of the game, I'm not that good with code but far as I remember these are things such as calling Steam API functions (Which many cracks either remove or suppress.) and also checking path structure such as how Steam uses .\SteamApps\Common\ to name a few things but there's probably more.
TZFix could be made compatible with a bit of work and using a Steam API emulator rather than fully cracking and removing said API far as I've read but I guess TBFix could have been adjusted to fix some of that too.

This game seems fun. Ran it just to see what the Tales series is all about. Left my seat 2 hours later and came right back to it.

they didn't joke on the whole "prequel" thing about Zestiria... can't wait to see how the story unravels!

Not really an option without a PC port for most of us these days since you need a x360 or a modded ps3 (mine broke ages ago) to play it, i just wish xenia or rpcs3 would get better supported so we could at least emulate them.

Tales of Vesperia on PS3 does not have an English version. That's why you need a PS3 with CFW for the English fan patch.

btw does anyone have sound issues?
I get missing voice work on skits and the sound effects like footsteps etc. sound like they were recorded at 8 kHz.

The game has issues with audio, stereo and 5.1 is supported but you should try to limit your sound settings to 48000Khz (44100 being recommended though 16-bit and 24-bit both seem to be OK.) and I'm not sure how well supported 7.1 is either.
(Demo was even more broken but the full version solved much of it though the first patch then broke it again before the second patch and onwards have so far seen it fixed again.)
EDIT: Third party tools for headphones will also cause audio issues whether it's Razer or Logitech or something else.
(Technically those are drivers but they have some control panel software too which can interfere.)
