The Division Movie to Star Jake Gyllenhaal - Report
Ubisoft Motion Pictures is currently on the hunt for a writer.
Quote: | Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler, and End of Watch actor Jake Gyllenhaal will star in a movie adaptation of Tom Clancy's The Division, it has been reported.
According to Variety, Ubisoft has started developing the movie, and Gyllenhaal is attached as both lead actor and producer. The company is currently looking for a writer to pen the script, the site adds.
Gyllenhaal is no stranger to working with Ubisoft gaming franchises, as he previously played the lead in Disney's adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Ubisoft recently established an internal movie division and has a total of six movies based on its most popular gaming franchises in development. These include Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Watch Dogs, and Far Cry.
While movies adapted from video games have a bad reputation, Ubisoft hopes to change this by retaining creative control of its projects.
"The best way to [make sure a video game movie doesn't fall flat] is to make sure you control what is important in movie creation," Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot previously said.
"It's the scenario and the cast and the director. And if you are capable of negotiating with those guys in the movie production studios, making sure they are on the same page as you, that they understand the IP-- what is strong, what makes it interesting for the gamers--then you can create something that will match people's expectations."
The Division has proved to be one of Ubisoft's most successful video game launches, having generated more than $330 million worldwide in its first five days on sale, becoming the company's fastest-selling game ever. |

I enjoyed the game the first few weeks very much. The premise of The Division is rather interesting. So i'm interested to see how the movie turns out.
TBH i expect this to turn out like a nice watch-and-forget popcorn flick.

I think it'd be awesome if we started getting 'proper' / enjoyable movies based on video games, because right now, movie adaption usually = shit. It turns out repetitive gameplay, shallow plots and poorly thought out protagonists don't really transfer well to the big screen.
David Cage (Heavy Rain) is one of those developers who seems like he'd rather do conventional movies than video games but wasn't talented enough to do movies.

Jessica Chastain in Talks to Join Jake Gyllenhaal in Ubisoft's 'The Division'
Quote: | Jessica Chastain is in negotiations to join Jake Gyllenhaal in The Division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures’ adaptation of its own hit video game.
Gyllenhaal is producing the project with Ubisoft’s Gerard Guillemot.
The storyline is set in dystopian New York City after a smallpox pandemic. In the third-person shooter game, the player is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, aka The Division, and is searching for the origins of the outbreak.
Ubisoft is packaging the project before taking it to studios. It’s a process that has been effective for the company, which set up Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender at Fox and Regency (now in postproduction) and Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy at Paramount.
Ubisoft developed and published the game with Red Storm Entertainment also involved. Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were the platforms.
The twice Oscar-nominated Chastain will be seen toplining Europacorp’s Miss Sloane, a gun-rights drama that has an awards-season-minded release date of Dec. 9, and also will star opposite Daniel Bruhl in the World War II drama The Zookeeper’s Wife.
The actress also will soon tackle the lead in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Hollywood gambling drama Molly’s Game with Idris Elba.
Chastain is repped by CAA, Mosaic, Hansen Jacobson and BWR. |

How many French speakers will be masked as Americans in this film, I wonder. They always try to sneak in at least a few in their games.

@Mister_s
Yeah. The trailer was OKeish and there is a chance the film will be good but still...Taking into account the source material it's a pure gamble..I believe he should play in films like Hunger, Shame, Macbeth, A Dangerous Method etc.. certainly not in the action film based on one of the ubisoft crappy (story-wise) games.

Writer of Traffic and Syriana to film The Division
Quote: | “Do not march on Moscow,” said Field Marshal Montgomery, “and do not make a videogame movie.” Wise words that continue to be ignored by the titans of this ridiculous industry. Ubisoft, as you might have heard, aren’t marching on the Kremlin but they are making another videogame movie, this time based on Tom Clancy’s The Division [official site]. Today they announced that Stephen Gaghan, screenplay writer of Traffic and director-writer of Syriana, will be writing and directing this too.
“The game has been an enormous success,” said Gaghan in a press release, “in large part due to the visual landscape they [Ubisoft] created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan. It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities.”
Actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain are already on board to star in the crumbling apocalypse of New York City. Things they may do in the film include dying in the cold because their temperature meter dropped too low, or getting murdered by hackers in the Dark Zone as they try to extract loot.
Ubisoft are confident that hiring an Academy Award-winning director is a strong move. Previous acclaimed directors involved with videogame films include Duncan Jones of sci-fi hit Moon. He did Warcraft. Ubisoft themselves have made other movies based on their franchises, including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which was badly received, and more recently, Assassin’s Creed starring Michael Fassbender, which was also badly received. Here’s a further list of movies based on videogames, all of which were badly received.
I’ll wish some good luck to Mr Gaghan and co, because it would be nice to finally have a black swan to point at whenever videogame movies get mentioned. But I’ll also say that I’m baffled by Ubi’s insistence on chasing the Hollywood scene, after so many obvious failures. Hasn’t anyone ever brought this up? I can think of at least one person at Ubisoft who can tell them the definition of insanity. |

LAU HERE!: The Movie.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

‘Deadpool 2’s’ David Leitch to Direct Jessica Chastain, Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘The Division’ (EXCLUSIVE)
Quote: | “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch has set his sights on his next project, signing on to helm Ubisoft’s “The Division” movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.
The news comes just months after it was announced that he’s also on board to direct the “Fast and Furious” spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Sources stress that the Universal spinoff will shoot first, as that film is already set to go into production this fall, and the hope is that Leitch would move on to prep “The Division” some time in 2019.
“Gold” director Stephen Gaghan was previously attached to helm the video game adaptation, but has since left the project.
Leitch’s producing partner, Kelly McCormick, will produce along with Leitch through their 8711 banner, as well as Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Nine Stories and Chastain and Kelly Carmichael of Freckle Films alongside Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
Based on the best-selling video game, the story is set in a near future where a pandemic virus is spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating New York City and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, is activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.
Gyllenhaal and Chastain have been with the film project since its conception and have been persistent in making sure that it matches the tone of the video game, while also reaching audiences who appreciate the actors’ own past work.
As for Leitch, the stunt coordinator-turned-director has been a rising star on the action scene after he and his stunt partner, Chad Stahelski, broke out with the cult hit “John Wick.” Stahelski took the reins for “John Wick 2” as Leitch moved on to the Charlize Theron action movie “Atomic Blonde,” the film that helped land him the job of “Deadpool 2” after that sequel lost its director.
The early buzz around “Deadpool 2” proved so impressive that Johnson aggressively pursued Leitch for his “Fast and Furious” spinoff before the in-demand director could land his next film. |
