So a desperate pirate NPC should have access to thermal weapons, and can take down a A-rated Python with ridiculous ease? No of course not. Unless said ship is an Anaconda, or higher - which shouldn't be attacking player ships lower than itself anyway - Python's should easily be able to put up a fight, or escape without being decimated in a few seconds of combat.
And don't start me on FDL's. I lost a number of Cutter's to those, and again, purely due to insanely OP weaponry.
And besides all that, every other iteration of Elite, NPC ships have been nothing more than a nuisance. That's how it should be. I didn't play Elite: Dangerous for just the combat, and I shouldn't be forced into it by OP pirates, who by their very definition, shouldn't have access to huge ships, with OP weapons and seemingly unlimited shield cells.

And do you notice even in those posts, the rabid fanbois ready to defend even the most obvious of game issues? And I really wouldn't care - but these are the guys that Fdev seem to listen to more if their current beta is anything to go by.
None of this would have happened if we had the offline mode as promised back in the kickstarter... I can almost hear Sabin's ghost agreeing with me...

Cheating AI is more the standard rather than the exception in most genres, it's the only way it can even come close to competing with a human player.
Cheating AI is a misused phrase in some cases, as it is just a limitation of the implementation of AI in a game that is designed to offer more of a challenge, without using player-limited mechanics - and while we all moan about it, we tend to accept it as CPU's just ain't as clever as us.
But, in ED, the AI is surprisingly smart. It will boost away if it's shields are low. It will use various methods of keeping behind you. It will do a lot og things we humans do. But... it still has magical healing abilities, such as REALLY fast shield battery recharge, and an endless supply it seems. Andm being an AI< it has very high precision when it comes to aiming - and THAT is a problem, especially when using heat-buffed weapons.
I like AI, I like challenging AI, but I don't like deliberately OP AI JUST to offer challenge. NPC's are, after all, not humans, and in the universe of ED, NPC pirates should not be elite combat pilots, able to hunt down another combat ship's weaknesses.

Just made a deliberately antagonising post on their forums. It's not a troll, I mean what I say - but I bet I get a load of people posting to criticise what I say without any actual substance to why. I love internet forums, they're getting worse every day. Soon you won't be able to have a negative opinion on anything at all.

Is there no difficulty levels at all (isn't there a SP component in the game, or is it just the same game without other players)? Sim game communities tend to be very dedicated and Elite is no exception in that regard, so if the AI didn't have those cheaty crutches in its disposal, a lot of players would probably whine how it's all too easy. It's an endless balancing act with no solution that'd please everyone.
It does sound a bit strange if EVERY npc has the same amount of those cheaty cheats - you're right that some crappy junker pirates shouldn't pose much of a challenge even in greater numbers.

Hey Kal, what makes the fight is the pilot. The ship is an added bonus (a big one).
Sabins ghost? Sabin died?

No he didn't die. He just doesn't hang out here much (at all?) anymore. Likely a lot due to some of the above mentioned fanboiism

If it WAS just the pilot that made the difference, I wouldn't be complaining. But I'm talking about AI, who are not pilots - they're computer generated characters. So the idea it's 'Pilot' only, is moot as the ships the AI use are too powerful and illogically picking targets.

I have been 'hyperdicted' twice tonight, and it is epic. It is clearly the beginning of the next phase of the building Thargoid story. It's already been determined by Canonn that something will happen after a certain number of these encounters, due to a counter hidden in the captain's log.
And the hires shots of these alien ships show a stunning amount of detail put in by Fdev's art team - it's exquisitely drawn, with the smallest features showing impressive details.
Just a pity it took 3 months to get to this stage of the storyline.
