Ubisoft acquires FreeStyle Games
Former Activision studio joins the Ubisoft family.
Quote:
Ubisoft has acquired FreeStyle Games, the studio behind Guitar Hero Live and DJ Hero, from Activision. It will now be called Ubisoft Leamington.

The studio will be led by new managing director Richard Blenkinsop. He will also lead Ubisoft Reflections, taking the position of Pauline Langourieux, who chose to take on a more hands-on production position within the studio.

According to Ubisoft, Ubisoft Leamington will work in close collaboration with Reflections and Ubisoft’s other International studios to develop AAA games.

Here’s a brief introduction to Blenkinshop:
Quote:
With over 17 years’ experience in the industry, Richard has worked as producer, senior producer and executive producer on a variety of titles at Codemasters and Activision; these include the likes of Blur, Rome: Total War and Call of Duty 3.

Richard succumbed to the inexorable draw of his birth-city when he returned to Newcastle to join Reflections in 2012. Here, among other games, he’s worked on The Crew and Tom Clancy’s The Division. In 2014, he became the Associate Managing Director, and now Managing Director of the studio – a role in which he aims to build on Reflections’ 30-year legacy of quality, resilience and expertise, while cementing the studio’s reputation and growing its contribution to the games industry.

Last time i bought a boxed copy of a game was for the second WOW addon i think, which is many years ago.

Though i rarely buy cheap Collectors Editions for the figurines/other material things, but not for the game itself.

Retail keys are what some of the less questionable retailers sell. A publisher deciding not to sell boxed games isn't quite a good thing.

4 Telltale Developers Move to Ubisoft

Quote:
Four Telltale Games veterans have been hired by Ubisoft San Francisco, Ubisoft announced today.

Dennis Lenart, Nick Herman, Pierre Shorette, and Adam Sarasohn have all been hired by the studio to expand its "narrative creative pool," according to Ubisoft.

"We are excited to welcome these strong industry veterans to our skilled team at Ubisoft San Francisco." said executive producer, François Pelland. "As we continue to expand our portfolio of games, we look to hire the best talent in the industry and infuse team members with a shared passion for development."

Lenart oversaw the first season of Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One and was the creative director for Minecraft: Story Mode. Herman was Telltale's first cinematic artist and worked on The Walking Dead's first season as its lead cinematic artist and director.

Shorette, who was Telltale’s director of writing, wrote for The Wolf Among Us, before leading the writing for The Walking Dead’s second season and Tales from the Borderlands. Sarasohn worked at Telltale for four years as a producer and helped ship Tales from the Borderlands as well as train new producers for the developer.

Ubisoft notes that all four of the former Telltale veterans will work on projects to be announced in the future.

Creative Director Alex Hutchinson Leaves Ubisoft
Quote:
In a series of tweets, game director Alex Hutchinson has announced that he is leaving Ubisoft to found a new company called Typhoon Studios.

"So! I left Ubisoft after 7 years. Extremely proud of all we achieved on Far Cry and Assassins but very excited to build something new," Hutchinson wrote.

His tweets also relay that although his new company, which he is founding with developer Reid Schneider, won't have much to announce, for now, they are working on "...a brand new world to inflict on all of you, so stay tuned."

The Typhoon Studios website is currently quite bare, only stating that the studio is looking to hire "OUTSTANDING talent who want to make waves in the industry" and "people who are not afraid to be BOLD!"

Australian-born Hutchinson worked on both Assassin's Creed III and Far Cry 4 during his 7-year tenure with Ubisoft and previously acted as lead designer on the Sims 2 and Spore with EA.

Ubisoft Opens Two New AAA Studios
Bordeaux will become the fifth French team, while Berlin makes three German offices for the publisher

Quote:
Both will assist on AAA games for the publisher. Ubisoft Bordeaux, for instance, will work on franchises like Just Dance, Steep and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The newly found studio in France will report to Xavier Poix, who's managing director of Ubisoft's French companies.

Ubisoft Bordeaux will become the fifth French studio for the company. Ubisoft Paris was the first internal team and is currently celebrating 25 years in operation.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft Berlin will assist on an unannounced project with the Blue Byte teams, which are known for strategy games like The Settlers and Anno 2205.

The new studio in Berlin will report to Benedikt Grindel, who serves as studio manager for Ubisoft Blue Byte.

In the first year of both new studios, Ubisoft plans to bring on 100 additional employees. Last year, the publisher opened up Ubisoft Philippines.

I still post from time to time, but I've been busy with work lately. With what little time I have left I'm trying to get through my massive backlog. Smile I still visit every day though.

Former Activision Parent Company Could Own Ubisoft By the End of This Year
A new report says the move will appease investors

Quote:
French conglomerate and former Activision parent Vivendi is reportedly honing in on publisher Ubisoft, with an acquisition expected by the end of this year.

This comes via a new report from Reuters, with the publication's sources saying that advertising group Havas and Ubisoft are the first on Vivendi's takeover list as it attempts a major expansion this year. The expansion is reportedly an act to appease investor concerns after Vivendi's shares dropped 3% despite the fact Chairman Vincent Bollore has spent nearly 15 billion Euros on shareholders and acquisitions.

Vivendi currently owns 25% of Ubisoft and has been jockeying to buy the company after it acquired Gameloft. Ubisoft heads Michel Guillemot and Yves Guillemot have been actively against the takeover, and last year reached out to Canadian investors to stay independent.

Vivendi acquired Activision Blizzard in 2008, but sold its shares back to the company in 2013.
