So a friend of mine bought a PS4, it's pretty cool overall, although the situation with the multi-gb updates on every game is surprising! We couldn't even start Drive Club without the update...
Anyway, that's not the point, the point is that my jaw dropped with the gamepad, holy shit it's so good! Not only is it ergonomically great and feels robust, but it also has a touch screen and a light. For example, in GTA 5 the light goes cop-mode when they are after you! Oh and it has a speaker, too, for example when the NPCs call you on your phone!
I was impressed. My question is this, is it worth it to buy it for the PC? I mean, so modern games support it? I have a Saitek Thrustmaster 3-in-1 and I am getting tired of using that xbox gamepad emulator ...

AFAIK none of those special features are supported on PC yet, and i doubt they will be in the future. At least not officially.
You can use it as a simple gamepad just fine though.

the official overpriced bt dongle from sony should be available soon. then it will work wireless too without 3rd party driver shizzl etc
and no, i dont think any dev will make use of the lightbar etc. its not important und will annoy you soon (thank god you can deactivate it now, when the ps4 got released it was long time not possible to deactivate or even dimm it)
and no pc games wont support it in the future at all (i.e. with button display etc). they have no reason to change, ms is the big player when its about pc gamepads. the only game which acutally can display the ps button layout is imho mortal kombat x
and no its not the best pad available, thats still the xboner one

Watch dogs 2 officially support dualshock 4 on PC including with correct button prompts etc. Although they have issue with the updated PS Slim controllers that are not detected and don't work at all with the game. Only the original/old Dualshock 4 works.

no it doesnt
yes u have for many games to have the pad working properly
no it still doenst, gets recognized wired without problems, but wireless its not supported till sony releases their overpriced bt-dongle (and the ps4 remote stuff forces a wired connection)
almost none, x360 is standard on pc. sony never cared about support so ms decided with the games 4 windows stuff years ago to make the 360 THE standard gamepad
look at point 2
and i say that really often -> the ds3 was a piece of shit. thats why the 360 controller was able to claim that position. the ds4 is better, but once you got used to the stick placement on the 360 controller there is no way to go back (though the ds2 was THE pad back in the good old days, still use it with an usb adapter for fighting games -> gladly the usb adapter directly emulates it as 360 device, so no need to fuck around with 360ce etc)

Have any of you tried the ps4 controller with the newly released steam support? I believe it is supposed to function like a steam controller.

The Steam way is probably the best for configurability, but it will require you adding the game to Steam and there are some that might not make it easy for you.
If you are not interested in per-game configurations, you can set the standard "Desktop" profile as a gamepad and then it will just work even without adding games to the list, but at the very least, Steam will need to be running.
You will have to use some 3rd party software either way though, so it's not a huge deal.
Before I got the steam controller, I used the DS4 as my PC gamepad and didn't have any issues as far as games went. DS4Windows does a pretty good job. If all you want is standard gamepad support, it should be pretty seamless past the initial setup. There might be some conflict with games that have native DirectInput or DS4 support, but last time I checked the software had features to avoid that. You can also use the controller's touchpad or gyro for some additional inputs other controllers will not provide, which is great for PC specific stuff.
For me, the only downside to DS4 was the short battery life.
The most hassle free option remains the Xbox controller. The newest one (the XB1 S version) has Bluetooth support, so you no longer need a special receiver for it, unless you intend to use more than one controller.

I intend to get this thing within the next few days and I will post my experiences here. First I think I will try not installing ds4windows and using Steam only.

I got it yesterday and it works good with DS4Windows. I had to enable the "Hide DS4" option because Telltale's Batman tried to do its own thing and the buttons were all wrong.
The only thing that annoys me is that they don't have other colors for the V2. Oh, also the package contains only the gamepad, nothing else. No cable. Come on Sony, you damn gypsies, I paid 60 euros.
