Interesting how you can manage 60FPS @ 4K DSR when others with better hardware (and the same GPU) can't get 60 consistently at 1080p

I've an i5-6600K ( stock clocks i.e. boosting to 3.9GHZ most of the time ) and a GTX 1060 (clocked at a stock 1506 but the Nvidia drivers are boosting it to almost 1900 ), with 16GB of 2666mhz DDR4.

I'm running with all the settings turned up to eleven at 1080p. The game is CPU, and not GPU, limited. One thread seems to require double the performance of the other three. Once it gets up towards 100% the frame rate drops.

Driving around the middle island I'm mainly locked at 60fps. I suspect that lowering CPU intensive settings such as shadows or draw distance would keep it there.

Another guy:

I have a 1070 i was getting 30-50 fps and massive drops, i reduced draw distance and BOOM, 40-60 , still inconsistent but very much playable than earlier. btw i tried this wen i was abt to uninstall, im still playing it

Come on KC. Is it 60FPS @ 4KDSR looking in one direction at a certain time of day?

Even if I keep it at low settings with what I have, it still hitches to the high 40s and 50s. It's rare to keep it near 60 while driving around.

This is how it is on my pc.
All settings maxed at 4k dsr.
Just set sliders to 70%. Above that it deeps quite a bit

heh KC, you should know by now that we are serious men here. Very Happy

performance claims are going to be scrutinized by fellow nerds

But I get it, you seem to have installed 3 billion games since upgrading your GPU, and I bet it's overwhelming seeing all the games look glorious.

The biggest difference for me is that in GTA IV there is a global physics engine that takes care of the suspensions and collisions system, whereas in Mafia 3's simulation mode they basically only reduced the grip values, which does feel better indeed than the flabby standard mode, but the rest of the inconsistent physics/interactions is still there to ruin the immersion. Okay

yep, gta 4 is unmatched yet. it explains the performance I guess, even all these years later.

just like crysis 1, which still patiently waits for a 10ghz single core CPU to achieve glorious 60 fps all the time. Laughing

I wonder if this was done because consoles might be getting some new version. Obviously most of that is PC specific, but some aren't, and why bother now all of a sudden?... hmm!

Where do I download this patch? I have the retail DVD version, not on Steam.

Since nobody believes me, here it is:

I took a quick stroll around the city and took some screenshots. Even got myself killed to see if it maybe was weather/time of day giving good performance.
Lowest I got was 56 during drifting/driving. It was mostly 60-77 fps.
on 1080p I get only 10fps more. on 800x600 and lowest settings only 140fps Laughing

Seriously. Maybe the patched version is that much better or the game just loves my 2500k and gtx 1060.
With the same pc, just older gfx 7870, I had 20fps on 4k(using gedosato).

here are screenshots I took few minutes ago. DSR is clearly working. Finally gta iv with no jaggies on 1080p screen at least
 Spoiler:

Maxed settings. Just sliders at 70% as I said

@its steam and with new patch. Its detecting 6gb of memory so it is working

@Drowning witch - Yeah I am installing a lot of stuff but only finished Batman Arkham knight and it was very very good. Also maxed out 1080p and only dropped below 60 with heavy physx smoke (to around 45fps).
Worst performing game I've tried is crysis 3 so far. It hits above 60 easily but often drops. seems cpu limited.
Overall I am super happy with performance Very Happy

well i'm certainly always intrigued by performance analyses, so i will be doing some recording tommorow once it's downloaded Smile

you should install GFE KC, and make use of the recording tool, another great thing you got with your new GPU.

I have good internet (100 mbps) but with only 5mbps upload so it's a pain to upload movies. That's why I only took screenshots for now. BMP 4k screenshot is 24mb. Thankfully jpg i onlt 1,5mb Very Happy

GFE offers anything else of interest ?

@DW - it's super cool to finally be able to play those games that look nice and work great now. It is somehow a really big jump for me even thugh I only changed gpu from 7870 to gtx 1060. All else is same old crap.

Edit: Even thought everyone says that 2016 is the shittiest year, it was great to me. I bought apartment, decorated, moved in, engaged and bought a new GPU Very Happy (last one being most important) Laughing

not to me, but your mileage may vary. a 5 minute clip can be as small as 350mb, and still give you a 1080p 60 fps yt video, so it's quite awesome, even with slow upload speed.

Didn't securom already got removed years ago when they fucked up and provided a clean lauchGTAIV.exe on their forums? Always assumed that the patch didn't affect that file, so it could be used with any version but I'm not 100% sure now...

Be sure to download sweetfx and cut black levels to 16 235 because pc version always was washed out.
Or just enabling hdr works wonders in sweetfx too.
None of that on my shots above btw

Runs like poop for me.

Auto detect constant 60 but you basically see stuff pop in your face and LOD changes right in front of you. max settings dips to 40's and 50's.

I also have this issue where the game stutters after 1 min. if I change any settings, even if just reverting back to the same ones right away, it stops stuttering, and then starts again in 1 min. Regardless of setttings used.

Not sure what causes it, i'm on 376.09 drivers, latest GFE, win10 64 fully updated.

The stuttering shows in the vid kind of, but is much worse in game, making it unplayable. You can see it at the start of the vid before I show the settings, and the last 30 seconds again.

Since I don't plan on playing it, and every other game works fine on this PC, I uninstalled and didn't bother fixing the issue.

Constatn pop in is normal. Just use slider on 60 or 70 max. The game was not designed to work at 60fps and with slidera much above 30 percent. Xbox uses like 25 percent settings.

edit: But yeah it works like poop on that footage. Here on 4k it works like a dream. buttery smooth. That stutter is weird...

edit2: holy crap just tried fraps... at 4k, it reduces my fps from 70 to 25 and 10 seconds of video i 1gb Laughing ... I need to try that Geforce experience one time

seems others are getting the stutter as well after the update. could be driver related.

Anyways, not about to replay the game at this time anyways, deleted it.

Played some more after the patch and its awesome!
No more stutter and no more pop in. finally game works as it should 8 years ago Laughing

here are some 4k screenshots with just reshade. New reshade 3 is just fucking mind blowing. very taxing as I "only" get 30-40fps with this at 4k.
here are few reshade screenshot and one comparison of vanilla to rehsade:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/193143
 Spoiler:

Even though it looks awesome, I don't like the fps hit and prefer original graphics which were always washed out compared out to 360 version but I've noticed this some time ago.
Just lower ingame contrast to min and raise saturation 2 clicks from max and it looks fantastic. No more washed out. It's weird because contrast is not what is's supposed to be in this game. It rather works like gamma setting and default seems like 2.5 instead of 2.2 or something comparable...

Screenshot to compare:

and screenhots:
 Spoiler:

The game just amazes me. IQ is fantastic finally after these years. One more thing I am doing is forcing fxaa in vanilla version with low contrast/high saturation. Together with 4k dsr its great and mostly holds 60fps.
This game never stops amazing me.

Nine years later, one feature in GTA4 has never been bettered - here's its story
Quote:
Charting the phenomenal progress of video games these past few decades is easy enough. You've probably seen an image of PlayStation-era Lara Croft in all her stark polygonal beauty contrasted side-by-side with her modern character model. If not, perhaps you've seen Wolfenstein: The New Order's B.J. Blazkowicz sat next to his coarsely drawn early incarnation. Look at all those pixels, all that detail, and marvel at how far we've come.

Yet while this visual arms race continues, character physics are being left to stagnate. You might be able to bring down massive structures by taking out support beams on Red Faction: Guerilla's open-world Mars, and Microsoft may be promising to let us topple entire skyscrapers with the power of the cloud for Crackdown 3's multiplayer, but character models are left to flop to the floor, float above the ground, wibble through scenery, or keel over in a canned animation. Grand Theft Auto 4, though, was different.

worth for mods.
Otherwise I would stick with 360 version... or if You have good pc and like to spend some time on it, pc version can be good

If you have lots of playtime and money in GTA Online for the 360 and have any thoughts of possibly getting it on PC you need to do so before like March 6 I believe to still be able to transfer your old characters over to the updated versions on PC/PS4/Xbox One as they are retiring that feature. I actually just picked up the PC version last week because of this as I was hoping to hold out on a sub $20 deal but I put a lot of time into Online on the 360 version with a character that was level 183 so I didn't really want to lose all that progress even if I have not played it much in the last year or 2 just due to lack of 360 updates.

Replaying it in 4K DSR. So Much Win

There was truly something special about this game. The missions structure, the over the top characters, the whole fucking city, even the mini-games, it was just bloody brilliant. I still remember the amount of fixes (notepad editing?) I had to use to run in on a playable state back in '08 on my then HD4850. Razz

The game holds up really well, except for the shadows glitching out occasionally. It's a shame they didn't fix the frame rate issues. But hey, it's playable for me and I ain't complaining.
