scanning the whole system every few month with a livecd and kaspersky just to be sure

That's cause it's not catching anything you may have lol. MSE used to be GREAT, but starting like mid-years of this year they just fell way off the wagon and kinda just stopped caring. There was another couple new tests to refresh who was good and MSE fell way to the bottom. Bitdefender and Kaspersky have been neck to neck for months now.

Yeah i don't know.. but it works well for me. Maybe it also helps that i know what i can and cannot download and stuff like that because i can't even recall when i had the last infection.

I'm using NOD32 after previously using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the best product I've encountered so far. As for the whole licensing business, I have no idea, as I have access to legit licenses. But as long as you can make it work, totally awesome.

I use Eset Smart Security, which includes NOD32 too. I never really got a problem with that software package, that i could not fix. And i use it for over 2 years now i think.
Very leightweight, but also many ways to adjust it

So... do you men use antivirus software and if so which is the best / free / least system hog.

I currently use Windows 10 Firewall Control and Malwarebytes.

Today some fuck end went into a bank and withdrew themselves £4 ,500 from my account. Luckily they were stopped after trying to take another £3900!! Now i have to wait 5 days to see if i'll get my money back.

Not sure where the identify theft has come from, I want to make sure i'm locked down and protected online at least.

Need some free antivirus. Bitdefender is a no go because he fucks with cheat engine and has a tendency to delete game files being worked on it.

Right now I'm using ESET but after the 29th August update it blocks streaming sites (and some warez sites) I use to watch tv series and movies because of some java script adaware injectors.
They said they will do jack shit about it and disabling protection and entering said site just closes whole web browser.

Antivirus = useless.

AdBlock works better for idiots and if you are not an idiot then you don't need antivirus.

Yeah, for years now I've only used MalwareBytes on demand (otherwise it's never resident in memory) for the few times I feel there's a small chance that I downloaded something with malicious code. Still haven't catched a single virus in more than a decade.

The best antivirus is in your habits and discipline.

Havent used antivir software in years. The built-in one has been good enough I suppose and the only time I got anything, it was false positives.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Same here as couleur.
Not implying I'm invincible or 'better' Computer user than anyone here. Just decided some years ago that after 10+ years of using AV and only get one minor virus alert that wasn't a false positive, that I'm just wasting CPU, mem, and another annoying icon in my tray for nothing really.
The way I see it now, If Im sloppy enough on the internet to somehow get a virus, I deserve to maybe have to reinstall windows as my 'dumb tax' to myself for doing something so stupid to be in that position..lol

you are stuck in the past with your mindset, you still assume that malware is visually noticable. today the majority of the malware is made to not be detectable by the normal enduser and silently stay active for longer periods of time. long term key logging, long term botnet inclusion etc...

soit, i am also not using antivirus as i am solely running Debian, just wanted to add that your way of thinking is already a couple of years outdated Wink

your security stars with the trust you put in compiled code running on your system and as all happily install cracks and loaders, your only guarantee is trust until the circle of trust will be broken Wink you can be infected as we speak and you won't notice it. windows already has a broken log management, and the few logging features it has, nobody is arsed to scan through them daily.

half of the population downloaded silently windows 10 and they didnt even notice it, the future is looking bright Laughing

But I'd counter the statement of "majority of the malware is made to not be detectable by the normal enduser" with that most of us here on nfohump/nforce aren't the typical normal enduser Smile

I'm not saying its a safe bet and suggest just any random PC owner do it, just It's been working for me for going on about a decade so far (since around when windows 7 came out). I do Scan it every 6 months or so with a quick portable AV install version just to check up and see if I need to pay my 'dumb tax' via reinstall, and no issues so far.

My kids PC's and my wifes, of course. Put something on it for them as they are the typical PC end user types and get random problems from the net.

To be honest on what some people might see as me running around waving a torch in a paper house..first thing I do on my own windows install is disable Windows defender, turn off UAC, and stop firewall services. I just see their constant daily popups asking to allow things only useful as a "Keep mom/dad from installing a bitminer and password stealing malware on their computer because they was told they won an iPhone."
It helps people like the ones that go look for KMSPico and download from the first result google gives them.

I'd argue if you are even moderately computer literate, you almost have to try to get a malware, spyware, trojan, or backend exploit type issue.

Think of it this way: We may be playing with fire, but with our backgrounds, knowledge and computer experience, we are the equal to a traveling circus fire eater act in that regard.
Sure we might get burned, but chances are a lot less than the kid in the audience that wants to try it when he gets home.
