With that connection speed you shouldn't have preload it. It will take longer to decrypt it than download it whole again when it unlocks.

Yeah it takes less time but with a mechanical HDD which I'm still on it's still some 30+ minutes of it unpacking (At best.) when it's a 10+ GB game whereas I can download it faster so yeah I don't pre-load larger games anymore. Very Happy

I do wish they'd just UPlay or Origin the thing instead and let us download the files sans exe directly and that would be about a thousand or so times faster if it just has to download that last 10 MB or whatever. Razz

EDIT: SSD would obviously solve most of that but this is a SATA2 system so yeah there goes that. Razz
(I'd also lose some 7 TB of storage and that's if I get a 1 TB model of course migrating games over and keeping it as a OS HDD would work but just having a faster boot time and Windows related tasks wouldn't really be worth the money it would cost plus for best effect I'd need a newer PC system entirely for M.2 or maybe PCI-E 3.x over the slower SATA3 interface.)

(Upcoming x299 and Skylake-X might finally make for a upgrade worth the cost involved but that depends, will need more details first and Cannonlake seems better but yeah that's another year of waiting and hoping this system still holds, which it will but eh it's getting a bit old now at almost 7 years with only HDD and GPU upgrades.)

It's not about the HDD, it's the way Steam still handles preloading, I'm with JB here. Textures and Models locked in some cryptic format, bitch please

yeah, it's a slow crappy format, ssd brute forces through it luckily. that's their magic.

If you are a hoarder or stuck on sata II, then yeah, ssd's are not affordable. and with insane net speeds like JB, the only downside to him not having an SSD are load times really.

I simply treat my SSD as a disk drive.

I plugin a game when i wanna play it, then it's gone. no need for 7tb for games i play at any given time Smile

in 40 minutes....Steam is always like this...if it says "released in 1 hours" it means up to 1h59minutes. Now it says "less than hour".

It's based on idtech 5, not 6. iirc idtech 5 ran bad pretty bad on AMD.
