Quote:
One of the great things about The Witcher series has always been its independent pedigree. Coming from CD Projekt Red, the games have always had a very indie attitude, while sales have soared skyward, propelling the studio into the top tiers of gaming. Now, it seems, that might be in jeopardy as rumors are spreading that CD Projekt Red might be fighting against a hostile takeover.

The news has been compiled very well on Reddit, with official sources mostly coming in Polish, as the studio is based out of Poland. The events that have led to this current rumor is that CD Projekt Red is currently calling a nearly unprecedented emergency meeting of stockholders. The agenda for this meeting gives hints that the studio is currently fighting against someone trying to buy up enough stock to take over control.........

I'm a huge enterprise management and finances ignorant (even though I'm quite good at administering money Razz). How come a big corporation can do something like that even if the object of the eventual acquisition is a succesful (yet unwilling to be bought) company?

We have threads for Witcher 1-2-3 and Gwent. The publisher threads are there for complaints and news about fuck ups, I don't see any proper reason for this one when it perfectly fits in the TW3 thread.

Shareholders would have to be retarded to sell and give away control considering that the reason for success is pretty much that CDP is allowed to take risks and produce non generic AAA titles.

Unfortunately, shareholders can pretty much be retarded when it comes to big złzłzł

That's not retarded as you say, it's business. If I had a major share in a company and some huge company offered me triple my investment, I'd say fuck it and do it.

Did CDPR not sell those shares? SO CDPR is evil? I assume they needed money for making games, that's why they sold part of their company. Doesn't that mean you wouldn't have gotten Witcher 3 without those shareholders?

I hope it's Ubisoft. (Because of how ironic it would be, no other reason).

Easy. Hostile takeover = stock goes up in price. Sell all shares and stock at the highest price (using a front, just for fun). With the kazoomba pile of money, make a new company: CD Project REAL RED.

Make games.
Make a mental note to buy a new Porche.

They changed the company charter to include a voting poison pill . sounds like the
rules in Poland are similar to here in the US. This can be a good thing if the company is
well run, however it can be bad from a shareholder perspective for return on investment
whether short or long term as it usually tends to depress the price of the stock, and makes
it tougher to gain or borrow capital reasonably for corporate uses. My guess is CD projekt
Red is now large enough, track record long enough, and future earning projections
sweet enough, that their internal or external investment advisors have warned them
they are ripe for picking(takeover) and it's best to put out a "fuck off" sign in front
of the corporate castle so the roving bands of corporate raiders tend to look for easier
prey.

my 2 cents or grosze

(edited to add polish pennies Smile )

Chief Director at EA Warsaw is a nice position. Might need to check with the Head of State occasionally to confirm there aren't any bad bits about Poland Cool Face
