Indeed, laughing a bit my ass off with my Zotac Everytime i mentioned it in other Hardwareforums the idiots came out of nowhere in masses and everyone praised the holy EVGA.
I really like EVGA and had stuff in the past, but this error isnt good and i like how now all the fanboys look like idiots ^^
First thing I ever do (after I tried it works) is rip the cooler of new GPU. Unfortunately it's now common to stick those warranty void sticker on the screws. But my gigabyte didn't have it, so I added thermal pads on the backside memory. It has backplate, but no pads to actually cool the memory with it..
Thermal paste was sweet, liquid white stuff and little amount, didn't even change it first time around. First thing is to check reviews where coolers is removed, that actually all memory chips are cooled and VRM has proper heatsink. Now even more important, if you can't dissemble the card yourself.
Also do it for motherboards, add some ramsinks where there are naked chips to be stuck and change thermal (bubble gum) paste on southbridges. Years ago first think to do was add ramsinks to graphics cards, but finally it's done from factory. Seems though thinks can still be effed up.
Got my Gainward 1060 Phoenix GS today and i can confirm that it makes less noise. It uses the same system as the Zotac AMP as one of you mentioned but this one is better.
For comparison, during an hour of FO4 the Zotac would spin up maybe 30-40 times for like a minute each time. With the Gainward it spun up less than 10 times, for a shorter duration and with lower volume.
i would rather have "only" 2 years warranty compared to 5 if the card doesnt break down at all
and tbh: if a gfx card breaks its almost everytime in the first year. otherwise that thing runs and runs and runs and runs and runs... (my old palit gtx 260 is still working in the pc of a friends sister) how old it that card? must be 8+ years. even my old gainward 6000 whatever is still working in a pc, dunno which card it was exactly, some midrange card with the unlockable shader units)
atleast in germany, we have two different meanings for warranty. and the first one only applies to the shop who sold it, but after 6 months you are in charge for providing evidence the failure was there already when you bought it (impossible without wasting a lot of money).
the manufacture guarantee is optional. look at apple or sony, they give 1 year guarantee. if your fucking iphone breaks after that you are fucked
Apple HATES Norwegian consumer laws. They`ll fight but in the end they`ll have to pay up no matter, our "Consumer Council" lack of a better translation maybe...fight our battles for us.
My 4year old desktop started making noise. Fixed. My 3year old phone dies..fixed.
So, question. I set my fans at 50% and play. I can see that the card runs cool and stays at around 50c.
But it still spins up to the same level as Auto after a bit even if i set it to stay at 50%
EDIT: Nevermind, it was Nvidia Shadowplay. Disabled and it shut up.
EDIT2: My antivirus popped in to tell me about an update mid game and the fans started doing that stupid revving thing again
I don`t get it.
Edit3: GOD FUCKING DAMNIT WHAT. No matter what i do, custom profile, lock the fan speed. Nothing helps, it just spins up when it wants to no matter what i do. Exactly the same as the Zotac. This one is way more quiet so its OK i guess but when i set the fans to 50 you can`t even hear them, you have to go way higher so it really just spins up way to high. Checking the temp of my card at the time of spin up it was at 47c. Come on! Thats nothing!
At 50% fan speed the card never goes over 50c, WHY THE FUCK DOES IT SPIN UP WHEN ITS NOT EVEN HOT.
Think the main issue is, they got too few VRM phases, just 4 of the possible 6 used and even those only got half the components installed, making them even hotter.
One of the reasons I like to do my own 9/10 cards I have had in the past, exhibit this behaviour. Even if I was not fitting a waterblock, I'd still strip the cooler off and redo it myself. You just never know what may be lurking beneath.
Thought 1080s would be fine as they got all the phases, so cooler. But if the memory chips are cooking there uncooled, doesn't matter much what VRM temp you'll be getting.
Not yet. I'm considering RMA it just for a sake of RMA. My plan is still to go for Corsair H90 + Kraken G10. I already have them here on the floor I just need to find time to collect some 'before and after' data.

Well that will fix everything. You might as well open it before RMA, maybe it's all good with thermal pads and good to go. Or if not, RMA then.

Yeah I think I will do that.

For now with the recent issues uncovered it'll probably be mostly a discussion about said issues but even so there hasn't been anything new form AMD or Nvidia so there's little else to discuss currently as there's nothing new happening for at least a few months.
A couple of weeks ago I had this same 'back screen' issue once. I think I will RMA mine and return this one. No point of being without a proper GPU for weeks if I take this one apart then do the RMA and then just sit and wait...

So for christmas i'm going to be upgrading from my 770 2gb to a 1070, any advice on what particular brand model would be the best investment? Prob going to avoid EVGA over the whole heating problems. What would be the best price/performance brand model?

asus or msi maybe. But for example I have an asus 1080 and it's coil whines a little bit. (although I have to play the game muted and it must be absolute silence to hear it)
Might I ask why the upgrade? What games are you expecting to run better? (also what res?)

1080 res at the minute, well the vram factor is the biggest part of it especially with upcoming titles seeming to require more and more of it so it'll futureproof me for the next number of years. Heard good things about the 1070 and it seems like a good leap forward.

Think that's only the white dual fan version issue, STRIX doesn't have it. Funnily they are now the same (expensive) price here.
But if you have a 60hz monitor, adaptive sync will fix all whines. Or fast sync and locking fps somewhere under 100. More expensive solution new power supply (although it might go worse, if it's not audible to begin with)
