Quote:
From Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino (Youth, Great Beauty ), the eight-part series sets Jude Law as Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, the fictional first American pontiff in history.

Law plays the young and charming Belardo whose election might seem the result of a simple and effective media strategy by the College of Cardinals. But, appearances can be deceiving.

Law is joined by an international cast that includes Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Tony Bertorelli and James Cromwell. Great Beauty director Sorrentino co-wrote the series with his frequent collaborator Umberto Contarello, as well as Tony Grisoni and Stefano Rulli.

Paolo Sorrentino at Work on Second Season of ‘The Young Pope’ TV Series
Quote:

“He is writing the screenplay,” “Young Pope” producer Lorenzo Mieli told Variety. “After we receive it, we will discuss it with Sky, HBO and Canal Plus” and officially re-up for season two, Mieli – who heads Fremantle Media in Italy – added. The plan is to start shooting in the summer of 2018.

“We are of course hoping to do it,” said Sky Italy chief of content Andrea Scrosati, “but nothing is signed yet.”

News that a second series was in early stages had surfaced several days ago during a Rome presentation of the series.

The 10-episode Sky, HBO, and Canal Plus original production will roll out on Sky in Italy on Oct. 21. It will air at the end of October on Sky in the U.K., Germany, Ireland and Austria, and on Canal Plus in France.

Yep, I don't know how it works in other parts of the world, but here the show is under the Sky Atlantic exclusive deal Smile

The subject doesn't intrigue me to be honest (the church in general has a repelling effect on me, no matter the subject xD) but I'll give it a shot, if only for Sorrentino and his peculiar style.

Watched 10 minutes. Sorry I'm too ill to focus really. But these 10 minutes were fucking awesome!
Delirious, weird, great shots, some funny bits.

Unfortunately has this cheap feel to some scenes due to lightning - green screen.

Can't wait to feel better and watch it.

A lot of scenes in the vulgar language of Ixi. Vaffanculo and vaffanculo and I don't know what it means.

I will wait for proper subtitles because this release seems to be from italian tv.

Yeah. The cardinals speak in Italian between each other. The scenes with pope are mostly in English.

Haha yeah, I'm actually surprised that Silvio Orlando and the others try to speak English from time to time, it's a huge effort for them. Razz Laughing

It's early to tell, but I do enjoy the show so far. It's slow as one would expect from a Sorrentino production, minimalistic yet effective, almost surreal at times.
We can tell the subject is purely a fantasy one though, the church would never ever choose a pope that doesn't agree to be a puppet Cool Face

I've finished watching the first season.

I didn't find the story that interesting tbh but great acting, cinematography, music, dialogues, Sorentino's style, all this made me watch every new episode.

8/10

A word of caution though..The trailers and the first 1-2 episodes are misleading when it comes to the Pope personality and character. So, you might get disappointed later on.

Oh, and it is NOT House Of Cards in Vatican.

PS HBO's trailer is out

I was listening to the radio before that Sorrentino is writing a second season, so we can expect it to pop up.. sometime in the future. Smile

Completely agree with you Horny, there is never a grand narrative structure, but the characters and sophisticated cinematography indeed are the true stars here (especially Cardinal Voiello <3 Laughing).
