Steam is being incredibly stupid right now. Since they see me as previously being in Canada, and currently being in Australia (I changed from NZ), they'll let me say I'm a US Military serving abroad. But they won't let me say I'm from Australia. I killed the client and service, constantly through VPN, they SEE me as being from Australia, they saw me logout and login, but they still won't let me switch.
They simply say "you must login in the Steam client from the new country to be able to switch". Despite me doing so.

Wait what? Now we need to change our country on Steam in order to be able to unlock using the VPN trick?

That's what I had to do for a previous game. Otherwise I was still seen as being in my real country.

So that's why the AU VPN doesn't work for me. Pfffft, I rather wait till it's released in my region then.

I followed a tip from Reddit about disconnecting/logging off all my devices (especially my mobile device) from Steam before connecting with the desktop client with the VPN active.

That one didn't work for me, but switching Steam to the beta client led to the game unpacking after restart. So now it seems to be working.

If I bought it on steam, I can vpn unlock it?
What's teh secret?

I don't really care for MP so I'm hoping the AI isn't as braindead as some of the early players seem to suggest. The early version was locked out of the higher difficulties - hopefully they've done more than just cheaty crutches this time for the higher ones past Prince. |
I usually just play SP to get a feel for it and then me and the misses play hours and hours of LAN games  |

So when the guy says
"You can freely quit the VPN once the game is launched."
Once unlocked, the game/achievements/etc. will all work fine without still being connected to VPN? So the region unlock is independent of the Steam services running?

Last time I checked you can disconnect and keep playing but achievements won't register.

I'm having a hard time to adjust.... 
- The new fog of war is annoying as fuck
- The new movement rules are annoying
- Idk how many times i moved a unit instead of selecting a unit
- Units being greyed out because idk why
- Ruins are hard to see

Yes
This is one of the very few games that has NOT gone full retard and dumbed itself down.
The game feels far more playable than the last few Civ Games at release.
