The difference is VR also interests industries other than the video games one or entertainment so it has a higher chance of not fading away.

VR has been in existance since the 80's, in different forms, 3D as well. Actually the first 3D images that were produced are as old as the late 1800...

So no, it's not "gimmicks" and it will not go away any time soon, deal with it Very Happy We have always strived for more realism when it comes to pictures and movies, so 3D is obviously a natural development. "Picture Depth" has always been a huge deal, even for 2D displays, TV's that can show off depth better has always been preferable and has always been used as the reference.

Also, 3D did not "fade into oblivion", now with VR even more people will realize what it does for games (on the whole more interesting than 3D movies). For movies it can sometimes be gimmicky, but far from always. There are movies that benefit greatly from it, like "The Walk", or action flicks where it's mostly about epic scenes and immersing the viewer into the "world" (e.g Avatar, while it sucks in 2D its a really nice experience in 3D on a large screen).

There is no graphical effect out there that does so much for graphics / immersion as stereoscopic 3D, be it 4K, HDR etc, in comparison those effects or resolution upgrades are very gimmicky and adds very little to your experience as a whole.

Forget about RPGs, Bioshock, any decent third person action adventure or whatever.. You won't be getting this in VR for quite some time.

Again, this is the reason i prefer to play with 3D Vision over VR, currently.

There's gimmicky VR, gimmicky 3D movies, not adding anything really.. But if you take gaming as a whole, if you are completely honest, it's mostly shit with a few gems that makes all the difference. VR is no different, most is shit (especially currently since this generation hasn't matured) but there are gems.

HL2 was not the least gimmicky in VR.. The controll is just suberb in comparison to using just a mouse (aim and where you look is always the same - very lame and robotic, not immersive at all). That's how VR should be done and it can be done, HL2 is a really old game with VR added to it, so obviously it can be done even better.

So did stereoscopic 3D tho, there are plenty of "niche" application in industry where it could come in handy. But the problem is, you need mass adoption to make a technology successful, a few applications in niche markets aren't going to cut it.

Yes, 3D is something that has existed for a long time. But every time it has "surfaced" commercially it has always faced a couple of years of success (thanks to its "novelty") and then faded into obscurity again.
And I'm not the one saying that this iteration of 3D is "fading into oblivion again", just look around you: less and less high profile movies are being made in 3D, TV manufacturers are removing 3D from their high end TVs and even Nintendo, who named their console "the 3DS", has now basically said "fuck it" and released a 2D version of it (and, tho we don't know for sure yet, no one is talking about 3D features on the NX).

I'm not saying that 3D is doomed to ALWAYS fail, but I don't believe THIS ITERATION is the one that is going to make it a standard. Maybe next cycle... preferably when the tech is ready to make us experience 3D without gluing extra hardware on our faces.

Which movies arent being made in 3D? I watch all the new big movies and they always comes out in 3D (well, not drama, but when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy).. Just the recent 1-2 weeks: Star Trek Beyond, Independence Day 2, X-men (most recent one), latest Capt. America, Warcraft..

To give up 3D now would be really idiotic for the movie industry, they are obviously aware about the current VR craze, that new tech might take advantage of their sterescopic 3D movies. These people must think ahead and see what both the current and possibly future demands might be.

There will never be a standard with VR, just like with TV's/screens/projectors it will always evolve. I agree that there are bigger and smaller "cycles" with VR though, and this one now is the biggest we have been in, so far.

3D that tracks all around you without something that you wear on your face? I dont see how that would be possible, some kind of glasses is the minimum for this tech for very obvious reasons, they will shrink in size obviously (another really good thing with 3D vision - extremely light to wear..)

I kind of agree, making mediocre games (or making gimmicky 3D movies) will turn the whole thing into a sad joke. On the other hand i can understand that companies needs to start somewhere, they need to try stuff, they need to know what they can sell and some companies must build up their budget before they can take on something that isnt just a simple demo.

The biggest problem is support from big companies, they wont be willing to support something that 1% of their customers own. So it's this crappy loop.. people arent buying VR because no games, big companies arent doing support because no one has VR anyways.

Last time i checked, VR games didnt have recommended specs of i7-6800 and GTX 1070 / Radeon Fury, its listed in this game steam site, sounds pretty ridiculous.

Seems like in The First Encounter you can choose between teleportation and moving with the trackpad. This is how it should be done, will buy to support them.
