I would definitely recommend it too (unless one is allergic to the peculiar horror-narrative-based sub-genre), if only for the poignant atmosphere, sense of immersion and attention to details alone. It's almost a philosophical experience really, the game holds your hand while making you feel completely lost in time and space. Razz

i think you can even completely remove the monsters now, so if you dislike the whole hide n seek thing and just want to soak in the loneliness, crushing atmosphere, darkness and the intriguing and thought provoking story, you can!

Try the beta branch, these guys don't really post changelogs but it's updated fairly often.

https://steamdb.info/app/282140/depots/

Six months since the latest main branch change, seven days since the beta branch was updated. Smile

Also if you can find the config file try setting windowed mode and see if that helps if fullscreen causes a display driver timeout error.

EDIT: Seems the Windows files are already up to date so the beta branch won't do anything.

450+ K copies sold. Is well past the breaking even point.

It cost 10x more than Amnesia to make.
Year 1 income of Soma (PC sales) > year 1 income of Amnesia. And if you add the PS4 sales, even more so. They are very happy with the sales.

2 projects in development but it will be a while before an announcement. However some smaller stuff will be announced later this year and another thing early next year. (Soma DLC? Soma movie?)

What let it down for me was hiding the lore in the final levels around a monster that didn't let you stop to explore it. In fact the monsters as a whole were a let down for me.

im so glad it sold well. despite its shortcomings in terms of GAMEPLAY, the story/atmosphere/world building/concept were wonderful, i really adored it, and i hope they're encouraged to make more games like this in the future, exploring similar themes..

heck.. i know i shouldnt, but i do wish theyd even go back to pathos 2 for more story? Smile the characters were so great, and the story was just chillingly tragic.

Do the "monsters" (no idea what we're talking bout) splash your playthrough with cheap scares? I'm eager to play it, but I'm not fond of scary games à la Amnesia...

Nope, they apply psychological pressure instead Very Happy

Basically you need to figure out what each type of monsters reacts to and how they see / hear you. Lots of game lore are in the areas with such creatures and that makes game's depressive story even more depressive.

Crying or Very sad

There's an update: https://frictionalgames.blogspot.it/2017/09/soma-two-years-later.html (650k units sold, 200k increase since last year)

As for the future projects, there will probably be an announcement next year:

Quote:
The first project is in full production, and about 80% of the team is currently working on it. The focus for most of this year has been on creating the first few maps of the game to create a solid vertical slice based on our experiments last year. However, we recently came up with some new avenues that we wanted to explore. The stuff that has come out of this recent detour is feeling really great and I am certain it'll make the game feel very special. All of this came out of what I just discussed: our focus on making games that leaves a mark on the player. I'm not sure we would have gone down this route if we hadn't explicitly stated that goal, which makes me confident it's a really good way of thinking. I'm afraid I can't go into any details on this, other than to say that the project will be horrific in nature. There will be no release this year, but we hope to announce something during the first six months of next year.

As for the other project, that's also going well. We've been a bit delayed due to new tech taking longer than anticipated to develop. The upside of that has been that the game has had more time in pre-production than any of our previous games. This has been incredibly valuable, as the things we aim to tackle in this game are quite difficult, and allowing it all to brew for a bit has meant many of the basic aspects are clearer for us. This game will be less about direct, visceral horror, and more about the player gaining an understanding of different concepts. This can, as we know from working on SOMA, be quite tricky to get right and requires a slightly different approach than when working on a more direct horror game. Release for this game is quite far off though, so don't expect to hear any concrete details in the near future.

i loved loved loved loved LOOVEEED soma. the story and atmosphere and thought behind it were fantastic. some gameplay elements let it down a bit, but damn, that was one hell of an amazing, crushing ride. I would love something with more refined mechanics that was as depressing as soma Very Happy

stillll holding out hope that the soma 'movie' that was promised actually materializes. first it was HEAVILY implied, then those pretty but shallow short 'transmission' clips showed up which FELT like they were part of something bigger, and then earlier this year even the main actress was still hinting that the project wasnt done, and that a proper film was still coming.

i can only HOPE that whole mauer thing was the reason the project (if it exists Sad) was put on hold...

The Safe mode patch is out for the game on steam.

Supposedly is is similar to "wuss mod" so that monsters are there but do not attack. They also changed their behavior to appear them doing other things instead of just sticking in Your face like wuss mod.

I love this news. Fuck running from monsters with no way of fighting. I disliked it in Amnesia and in Soma. But some have such amazing atmosphere, story and setting that I will happily replay it now, looking at every corner of the game.
