tbh the commentary for a game like basketball isnt as complex as it is for football
Depends I guess.... NBA does feel a lot more simplistic as to the commentary I heard on Belgian TV, they seem to be a bit more technical in Euroland... the sport itself is a different story.
Then again last time I was watching the NBA Shaq was still playing so... been a while. Things might have changed xD
I have the same kind of feeling when it comes to Indy car and F1... just too spectacle orientated instead of technical jargon when you compare the US commentary vs the UK one. Though Sky does a brilliant job in dumbing it down every year.
I got it, played a few games, and also started my career.
Im a MASSIVE nba fan and me and my bro have been playing 2k basketball for 11 years. So take my opinion with this in mind.
GAMEPLAY:
gameplay is more consistent, and realistic, but the difference isn't massive, what they have done though is get rid of everything that truly annoyed me with 2k16 , and refine the ai in every department to make single player much more enjoyable rather than frustrating.
the shot meter is WAY better and easier to time now that they have changed its design to a full half circle instead of getting it in the middle. big addition for me.
the defensive AI is much more consistent, and defense itself is VERY responsive and controllable, if you have control of Leonard you feel powerful, and you can genuinely make amazing things happen on defense, so that's massive.
and the little things, like curry being able to shoot from a mile out, or livingston banging in the post and doing turn arounds were things the game didn't recognise as legitmate strategies last year, but now all those real life unique player details and skills really work on the court.
presentation is amazing, new commentary is funny and engaging as hell. very very impressed all round.
MYCAREER:
written and directed by the guy who co-wrote creed. this is the most suprising element of any 2k game I have ever played. the writing is funny, charming, and not full of cheese, I genuinely care about the characters in this story and look forward to playing through it.
its a mode many reviews probably will skim over as they are reviewing the sports sim itself, but in terms of writing and charm it is honestly impressing me more than any game I have played in years. genuinely cant wait to continue.
WORTH IT?
If you like 2k and want a less frustrating more refined and polish gameplay experience, go for it.
If you weren't that into 2k16, but might be intrigued by what i consider the best story mode ever in a sports game (so far) then I would recommend checking out a few of Chris Smooves mycareer videos, see if you like the look of it. then take the plunge before spoiling the whole thing.
Otherwise it hasn't changed a massive amount so if you dont care for the story mode and didn't really nejoy 2k16, then definitely give it a miss.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
Haha yeah, the announced improvements gameplay-wise do sound interesting (on paper), but the default modes seem surrounded by more cringey fillers than the usual this year. It's stuff mostly designed for Americans, we can't possibly understand

An utterly greedy corporation screwing customers over (once again) and a spineless journo backpedaling because he's afraid of permanently losing the payola, the state of gaming in a nutshell
Absolutely disgusting. How anyone can support this garbage is beyond me.
People pay full price for a game and then pay more via microtransactions so they can skip the grind in a game they just paid for. You can't make this shit up...
The execs at 2K and co. must sit back and laugh at just how dumb the average gamer is.
Haven't touched NBA 2k the last couple of years. With each game they shifted focus towards the microtransactions more and more while neglecting the actual gameplay. The multiplayer issues on their own were enough of a deal breaker for me, but shafting single player shows how much of a greedy scumbags run that operation.
Sadly, 2K have not been able to issue us a statement in a timely fashion and so we have now returned the 3/10 score to the bottom of our review, 24 hours after the review was originally posted.
We give plenty of leeway to our reviewers, so if they reason their position well enough and it matches the score, then it will stand as is. In this case, Aran argued well enough for my liking that the balance between microtransaction and what you earn in game was dragging down the potential enjoyment for players. Whether entries have receive a 6/10 or a 9/10 in the past, it’s been a consistent point that he’s addressed in NBA 2K reviews for the last half decade, and it’s exactly this point that I relayed to 2K when they contacted me.
Yes, they asked us to reconsider the score or shift to a “review in progress”, but I can’t state strongly enough that there was no “pressure” or threat of blacklisting made or even implied. If this were the case, the demand would have been for the review to be removed entirely, which we would not have done.* However, the word “protest” was still misplaced and needed to be removed, and it was while doing this that the olive branch of a statement surrounding planned changes and adjustments to NBA 2K18 was made. So I made the call to change the score to pending at the same time, get on my flight and hope for something remarkable when I landed.

2K: Haircuts, coloring and facial hair are now 100 VC. Want to make sure it's realistic going forward! #NBA2K18

Nope have the isodemo... but after reading all that crap it most likely goes into the bin without playing. No doubt some bundle next year will give it to me though.
Going to skip create a player and just focus on exibitions and maybe a season.
Will report back.......
EDIT: Played a regular season game. VERY optimized. Great UI, IMO. Gameplay felt like I expected. Looks beautiful, except for Westbrook. They can't seem to get him right.
Since I didn't try the create a player mode, I didn't notice a single advertisement or pop-up regarding the bullshit currency.
Default gameplay speed felt just a bit sluggish, which is normal for this franchise, so bump it up a notch if you feel the same....
