On Windows that is.

Both Trend Micro and the US government suggest Windows users immediately uninstall QuickTime as a) there are critical vulnerabilities with the software and b) Apple responded they will never fix them as they consider it deprecated software. Instead they too suggest Windows users simply uninstall and forget about it.

I needed to install quick time so that after effects offers h264 as export. Any other option left then?

Export losslessly and then encode with a proper encoder. MeGUI will give you much better control over output and result.

Oh fuck no, that thing has not been maintained for years, and due to limitation of VFW, was never good in the first place. Also, doubt After Effects supports VFW.

Haha yeah, silly Adobe wants it for Photoshop too when importing videos xD
I grabbed QTlite some time ago, it's very obsolete but does the job for me and doesn't install additional Apple bloatware which is a plus.

Just a tip: Looks like if you only install the "QuickTime Essentials" component and don't open any .mov and .qtl files, you have a safe installation that will allow third party programs that depend on QuickTime to function as usual.

There are programs that require it.

Did you read the thread? 2 have been mentioned already by people in this thread.

And many more if you click my link on how to make a secure installation. http://www.codecguide.com/quicktime_installation.htm

Quote:
Apple has discontinued development of QuickTime. However, many professional applications require QuickTime for importing and editing certain file and video formats, such as MP4/MOV, ProRes and DNxHD. Examples of such applications are: Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, GoPro Studio, Sony Vegas, and Traktor DJ. This tutorial will help you install only the minimal components needed for such applications.
