2010 saw the release of NieR, a game that would go on to captivate fans across the globe with its deep story, complex characters, and amazing soundtrack.
Flash forward to 2016 –
NieR Producer Yosuke Saito, director Taro Yoko and composer Keiichi Okabe return, teaming up with character designer Akihiko Yoshida and PlatinumGames to present the next entry in the saga – NieR:Automata.
STORY
The distant future.
Earth has suddenly been invaded by extraterrestrial life forms, armed with weapons known as “bio-machines.”
Facing imminent destruction, mankind had no choice but to flee the Earth and take refuge on the moon. In an attempt to reclaim their planet, humanity formed a resistance army of android soldiers.
To break through this deadlock and reclaim their homeworld, humanity sends the “YoRHa” – an infantry unit of state-of-the-art androids – into battle.
An arduous battle between androids and bio-machines unfolds on an uninhabited, barren planet. And who knows what forgotten truths are revealed in war…
NieR: Automata™, the upcoming action-RPG from SQUARE ENIX® and PlatinumGames Inc, will launch on STEAM® for PC as well as the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system in early 2017. The highly anticipated follow up to the 2010 cult-classic NIER®, NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim a machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful weapons known as machine lifeforms.

Wtf..so they are gonna release Nier sequel but not the original game? OK.
And.. Platinum Games?
Their last 2 games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, The Legend of Korra..
It's not exactly a direct sequel at all and was made by a different studio, but yeah a HD remaster would be great and those games where low budget license trash they made to pay the bills nothing more.
This game will be glorious everything i've seen from it looks absolutely fantastic.

Holy shit, this is great! Been watching a playthrough of the first game and it has an insanely cool world and story. Sadly the gameplay in that is just serviceable, but it is perfect for Platinum to have a go at it in this sequel. I've seen videos of this before and it looks great, really glad that it's coming to PC.
Meh.
Doesn't seem to be a RPG like the first game.
You sure about that?

"NieR: Automata is a new third-person action RPG follow-up to the 2010 cult hit, NieR. Offering a fresh blend of action and RPG gameplay styles, NieR: Automata is currently being developed in collaboration with PlatinumGames, the studio known for its groundbreaking advancements in the action genre."
- The game will be optimized for PS4 Neo/PC, it's already 1080p/60fps.
- A demo is very, very likely.
- A NieR HD remaster would depend on Automata's reception.
—Shortly before the start of Gamescom, we received news that FFXV is being delayed to November 29, 2016. Do you see this as having any impact on the release of NieR:Automata in early 2017?
Saito: At the moment, this does not influence the release date.
—Is the development going well?
Saito: Yes. Just, we’re aiming for a worldwide, simultaneous release (which includes the PC version), so the Japanese version will be fine; we’re just worried that we’ll have problems with the QA (Quality Assurance) for the International version.
—I understand that you’ve announced a PC version available on Steam.
Saito: There are many international PC gamers out there, which is why we decided to make the game available on that platform. We’re also planning on making this version available in Japan, too.
—Will the PC version be 4K (Ultra HD)?
Saito: That hasn’t been decided yet, but we’d like to try for it. Simply, NieR:Automata runs at 60fps, but to run at 4K with 60fps, you might have to beef up your computer……
Aside by the Editor: The speculated PS4.5/PS4K/Neo console supposedly has the same specs: 4K w/ 60fps.
You've just announced that the game is coming to PC as well as PS4. How did that come about?
Yosuke Saito: Platinum Games are known in Japan as a great developer, but I think they might even be a little bit more popular in the West. I wanted this game to be more available for everyone worldwide. In Japan, not many people play video games on PC, but we've heard that there's many, many gamers who play on PC in the West. We always wanted to - we started planning for a PC version from the very start of the project.
We've also asked Platinum Games to work on the PC version for us, so there shouldn't be any differences between the PS4 version and the PC version.
I'm a little curious - given the system architectures are quite similar now, was there a particular reason you've skipped over Xbox One? Especially given that Nier appeared on Xbox 360 with a slightly different version in Japan - was there no temptation to do that again?
To be quite frank with you, it was a lot of work last time to create two versions with different characters and such! I do think we were able to gather up a really great team of people to work on this title this time, so I didn't want to split their focus. That's why we wanted to just do one version this time - that was decided from the get-go.
So, I think this isn't just our company - I think a lot of other companies also do it - but we actually start creating our games now on high-spec PCs and then optimize for the different consoles we release on. Since we already thought about releasing on Steam from the get-go, we'd already built the game in such a way that it would play on PC.
As I said, this is especially so because we've heard in Europe that there are a lot of PC gamers. To port that over and optimize it for Xbox One requires a number of extra steps. I think that is way too much for us right now, so we've decided to only go for the one console platform

I know Japan itself is more into consoles as actual gaming systems but what about the US?
(Also pretty sure most - all - games are developed and then rendered / demoed on high-end PC's but eh maybe it'll be a good "port" I assume Platinum can pull it off outside of publisher interference such as rushed release dates or whatever.)
(PS4 and XBO system specs aren't exactly similar either, yeah x64-x86-ish CPU's and AMD did the GPU's but two entirely different graphics api's and then the differences between the XBO "Windows 10" like OS and whatever the PS4 uses.)
(And as said by e.g Carmack doing a XBO game doesn't make it super simple to port it to PC either, there's some notable differences.)
Anime art and writing in the Japanese "original" version and then "Americanized" for the US/EU releases with a more western design and some changes to the writing, or as I've heard at least seeing how it's console exclusive and there's at the moment no emulator available for these platforms.
(Going by the above info though they won't be doing that again so it's more like the JP version of the first game then?)

They only changed the main character from the young brother Nier to Father Nier since they thought westerners would relate more to the fathers love to his daughter then sibling love for whatever reason nothing else was changed, well i didn't actually play the game myself either so far and just watched:
A friend of mine said the game is actually better in this form since the gameplay is not particularly great and it's all about the story /characters but dunno he might be exaggerating, btw the creator did say in an interview recently he would like to make a remake/remaster of the first game if Automata sells well.
