Hi,

I can get an:
Intel i6700K
MSI Z170A SLI Plus
32GB Kingston HyperX Fury 2400 Mhz
Windows 10 Pro

for €500,-. All sealed and brand new. Seems like a good deal, right?

I was already planning to buy a complete new system.
Other components I'm going to buy these days:

Case: NZXT H440 New Edition
GPU: Probably 1070 or 1080
PSU: Corsair SF450
CPU cooler: Scythe Mugen 4

Already have an SSD and such.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I was waiting for Kaby Lake but I think I'm good with the above.
It's been five years that I bought my PC so I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

i doubt that kaby lake will offer a serious improvement over skylake. and for that price you cant do anything wrong

+1 for that deal.

Sounds good. Even better if the products are indeed still sealed.

I would invest ~35€ though for a better CPU cooler, as you probably want to overclock.

but i would go for a better psu, 450 is enough sure. but if you wanna oc in the future you might want to have some reserves, would go for a 550w unit

Arent those the coolers (Scythe) that tend to bend the 6700k and break it? I would not get that cooler if i were you man..

Well, I got a Scythe Mugen 2 on my i2500K and works just fine. Yes, it's heavy but it won't break anything.

nothing bends and nothing gets destroyed. dont believe anything that is on the internet (cause it was simply wrong, doenst apply nearly the maximum pressure to the board -> "problem" was skylake got thinner hence people claimed the coolers destroyed their systems. but it was all bullshit). if you transport a case with a mounted 600g-1000g cpu cooler and wonder why it destroys stuff -> you are stupid

Well, I ordered everything now. I can pick up the case, the cpu cooler and the PSU.
I went for a Corsair RM550X, gold and fully modulair. Reviews seem very good about it.

I'll buy a 1070 or 1080 when the price drops a bit more. Can't wait to built the rig this weekend, I feel like a little kid Very Happy

Nowadays most of the heavyweight coolers include a proper back plate that will prevent most of the damage that you'd make on the CPU/board.
Ofc nothing beats common sense though, never screw it too tight and if you have to transport the case it's probably best to lay it down horizontally with the cooler facing upwards, I think?

Well, I got everything installed and running but I'm not happy with the cooling performance.
My GPU is ten degrees higher in load compared to my previous case (Antec One Hundred).
CPU is idling at 20's and load it goes to 70 degrees.

I'm thinking it's the case because of the GPU temp went up comared to the other case, but I actually expected this case would do much better than what I had.

So before with my 2500K in the Antec One Hundred:
CPU: Idle in 20's, load 59
GPU: Idle +-31, load 61

i6700K in NZXT H440
CPU: Idle in 20's, load 70
GPU: Idle in 37, load 67

dont know in what fridge do you live in but 20°C and even everything with in the range of 20-29°C even in idle is impossible (unless your roomtemp is about 15°C)

100% load for the intel cpus aorund 70 is more than normal, dont worry about it

Eh, my 2500 has 26/28 idle since I got that hyper 212 evo in July. Right now it's at 32 degrees without the fan on.

Normal room temperature, so no it's not impossible. Not going to say it's common either though. Smile

But yeah, he shouldn't worry about the temps.

Impossible? My 6700K with NH-D14 at 500rpm (all case fans also at around 500 rpm). Room temp 22-23 deg C

What temperature does your 6700k hit when you run Prime95 with maximum heat selected?

@tolanri: sorry, was meaning it towards the mugen 4 he is using. in winter its possible with that thing too (with 20°C roomtemp max)

for summer temperatures idle temps of 30-35°C are ok. dont know the case, but maybe its possible to lower your 37°C 3-4°C with a better airflow. how are the fans mounted?

I think it's the case causing not a really good airflow. If you Google NZXT H440 air flow you get tons of results. But it's very weird because standard you get 3x 120mm intake fans at the front and 1x 140mm exhaust at the rear.

Idle for the cpu are fine, I'm okay with +- 20 degrees. But I don't like the load temperatures even though they are within the limits. More heat is more noise. I expected better cooling compared to my old case, which was half the price.

maybe the exhaust at the rear isnt powerful enough? you can try putting a fan as exhaust on the top (would only put one there were in other cases your psu fan would be -> in the slot between the rear exhaust and the cpu fan. just take the lowest one fron the front 3 out and mount it on the top as exhaust

I placed two extra exhaust fans at the top, and it's a bit better now. To be sure it was the new case, I installed my whole new system in my old case and checked the temperatures there. Results were almost the same for the CPU, except the GPU was 5 degrees lower in load.

The i6700K is a hothead, more than I expected. I thought it would be way cooler with a Mugen 4 on it. I also did the thermal paste again and placed to Mugen 4 again, but the temps were the same. Maybe I can tweak the vCore a bit, since it's on auto it might get more power than it actually needs.
