It´s the "sequel" to the Movie of the Year 2003 called "Oldboy" which truly is an amazing movie, one of the best i´ve ever seen.

great news... Smile
it's not only a sequel of Oldboy however Wink
it's the third movie of chan-wook park's "vengeance"-trilogy
which consists of:

Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) (2002)
Oldboy (2003)
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (Chinjeolhan geumjassi) (2005)

highly recommended!
these movies are amazing Very Happy

I think they are worth watching, however, you should not start with this one since it probably wouldn´t make any sense at all. Start with Mr Vengeance if you need to understand how Wook makes movies.

so you thought old boy was a bore? taegukgi a bore? JSA a bore? you're crazy!

Yes these films are dramas and slow paced but they're good 'moral value' films and can show how unlucky some people are.

Taegukgi was a decent war movie, but a bit pecoral, overly long, and one sided moralizing. North Koreans are pictured as evil, heartless, and crazy. Clearly a bit too biased, sort of like band of brothers.

Old Boy and JSA, I haven't seen.

Laughing wow! how can they been seen as evil and crazy? If anything it shows the contrasting similarities between BOTH sides! the fact that the brother can make the transition shows how closely related they really are. Also when up against his brother who's now the supposed enemy does he finally realise that he shouldn't hate them for that reason alone. It's not really that long drawn out. The action sequences were amazing and brutal but pretty accurate. without it being 2 and a half hours long it couldn't have told the whole story nor showed all the issues in it. I believe every scene was worthy of being in their too. nearly every film has scenes to make up the time but taegukgi is perfect. Think through the film at stages and how varying it all is. There's the scene with them buying one ice cream, the next where they're loaded onto the train, then theirs the 'pit fight, the village executions, the 'madness' bit, the countless battles...... it's just amazing.

You might moan at it being a bit melodramatic with the final scene but when you compare the 'best film' of 2004 as being million dollar baby, it's not really that melodramatic is it? it's certainly a much better film and more heartening.

You certainly have your points Sublime. I think I might've missed a lot of content of Taegukgi because I expected it to be a war movie. Sometimes expectations of a movie can ruin the entire experience, so I won't say I was level-headed when I saw it.

I yield.

Well this forum is pretty informative Smile i didn't know that mr vengeance, oldboy and lady vengeance were part of a trilogy although it makes sense. i'm not really sure you need to watch them in the correct order to be able to apreciate them. Saw Oldboy earlier this year when it came out in theatres here, loved it and started looking for other movies that guy directed. Saw mr vengeance afterwards, and loved it aswell.
Now grabbing lady vengeance, hope it'll be good.
Also i don't recommend downloading the CaYEnne release.
i found this info: NOTE: The CaYenne rip is poor. A thin gel-ish haze or layer of pixelation goes on generally throughout both avis.

i'm getting the Sympathy For Lady Vengeance 2005 DVDRiP XViD DTS iNT-G SKiLL release instead.

they are a trilogy, yes.
but the characters aren't related to each other at all.
it's just 3 stories about revenge.

If you like Old Boy and the Sympathy...movies, you should see Three Extremes. Wook made the middle-part, which is amazing IMO!
