I couldn't find an Esoteril Blue 4 gran coupe WITHOUT the M package. So I took the picture of the advantage edition and said it'll be in Estoril Blue. Maybe I'll just go for simple black and get some sexy 18" rims instead...

How does the ECU make anything sound like a V8?

A proper V8 has a very distinct feel and sound. I doubt you can simply modify an engine with SW to emulate it. Maybe if you add some fake sound somewhere.

The app activates a small amplifier and speaker found next to the exhaust system when the vehicle accelerates, playing-back the appropriate vroom–vroom sounds through the tailpipe.

As I said.

It's a fucking amp + speaker that runs off software on the ECU to make your exhaust sound different, that's all. It doesn't make your V4 sound like a V8. Your V4 still sounds like a V4.

Exhaust sound != engine sound.

Dunno, I don't have speakers or anything. It's not a diesel...so.... but it does sound like an A45 after replacing the pipes and stuff....not really legal, but da popo didn't stop me yet, cus it sounds like a legit A45.

Sure.

That's because an A45 still only has a 4-cilinder, 2 liter, turbo-charged engine. In fact, it has your engine. The M133 is based on the M270. Bored out cilinders, different ECU mapping, different turbo setup, but at its core it's the same engine. The noise you hear on an A45 mostly is the exhaust. You can get the exact same effect by putting a custom exhaust on a Nissan Micra 1.1 from 1994. Sadly I know this for a fact because someone I know did it Neutral

This is what ricers do. Hell, you can flex off your muffler or replace it and get the same effect. Or puncture your exhaust pipe. Something like that happened to me with my 206; stopped at the entrance to a car park and my exhaust decided to just sort of bend and slightly break in the middle-ish. Result was my silly little 1.4 8v roaring like a monster Laughing

Upon inspection the previous owner had clearly messed with it, there were bad welds from front to back and the centre holding clip was broken. The reason it sounded differently is because the gases were allowed to come straight out, rather than being bounced around in the muffler before being pushed out.

What you get is this:

It's louder, it sounds more aggressive, but it still doesn't change the way the engine sounds one bit. That said, I think I can probably tell the difference between yours and a real A45. Because the M133 (which is a mindblowing engine Razz) has a very distinctive pop due to the way it shifts up and down (it cuts ignition and injection briefly when upshifting). You can't replicate that Smile

paxsali wrote:
I think you mean that it's not real exhaust sound.

Because engine sound and exhaust sound kinda go hand in hand together...

But I get the point that it's fake. Even still, if you think about it it's no more or less fake than any BMW 6cylinder biturbo, Mini or Aston Martin.

They're all "fake" sound out of the werk.

Sure, they go hand in hand in some ways - but the ECU is not involved in any of that. You can make even a 3-cilinder "roar" by just putting a different exhaust on it, but it will not make it sound like a V8 does. It might make the exhaust sound like some performance cars, but the engine itself still will not sound any different. The detonation in the cilinders still gives it a very different sound; when idle it's very obvious of course, but even when revving you still can't quite replicate that.

Example, take Audi's R8 V10.

This is the pure engine sound:

This is what the standard exhaust makes it sound like:

And here's a louder exhaust:

Note the difference between exhaust and engine sound. And yet, even with the stupid Capristo exhaust system (which is illegal on the road, btw - doesn't pass TÜV Laughing) it still has the distinctive 5.2 FSI V10 sound. The way the gases are allowed to exit faster doesn't change the characteristics of the engine in front of it.

An ECU tweak can not make a 4-cilinder sound like an 8-cilinder, because it quite simply can not get the 8 detonations in the same order. What it can do (especially when combined with an exhaust system change) is make the car as a whole sound more like an 8-cilinder version of that car would sound like, because they often come with louder exhausts to begin with. You could even go as far as tweaking the ECU to allow fuel leakage so that you get flames out of your exhaust (not recommended though Wink).

What your friend should've said is that he can make sound more like a high-end sportscar/supercar. Because the sound he can replicate, you get on 4-cilinder monsters like the A45 too, because it's pure exhaust sound. It's like saying you can make a non-turbo engine sound like a turbo engine; except that it's impossible to replicate the actual turbo whine (not sure why anyone would want to but that's another story Troll Face).

Sorry, for a petrolhead it's an important distinction Razz

Edit: think this video demonstrates what I mean quite well:

Not all V8s sound alike either. A German V8 is much more refined than most American V8s for example. American ones tend to have much more separated timings, making them sound more like old 2-cils Wink
