just read about the ending of the game, hilarious bad. would buy for 20 bucks, but 60 is a bad joke. so isodemo it is and cause it seems to be utterly dull and stupid not even buying it on sale
Who else thinks Sony paid the devs to sign some form of NDA about the game? I mean technically you aren't lying when you 'forget' to tell certain things.
Don't have a summary but it's pretty strange their twitter has been awfully quiet since release compared to a few days before, except for a few 'vague' answers.
This is brilliant tbh. Compare their sales and the amount of media coverage to the sales and coverage for other projects of a similar size. Whoever did the PR for this game deserves a king's share of the profits. I mean, sure the game is what you would expect from a team of this size, it's not terrible but you simply can't compare it to an AAA title (with that price tag), the magic is that they managed to convince so many people to buy this game and managed to attract so much media attention.

Indeed....I still am baffled how they managed to do that. I suspect lots of journos dicks were sucked in the process of getting much press coverage.

This is a win for the team in question regardless.
Unless, of course, they care about their future reputation. I hope they don't - as it would have been a massive mistake to corrupt yourself in public if that's the case.

Well you can request refund on steam so people actually can destroy some of the profit they made.

I think we both know that won't really affect the overall outcome.
They've marketed this game with amazing success - and they'll end up with a ton of profit, regardless.
You are right that in reality majority of people don't know it's so easy to get refund on Steam, and portion of people that know rather complain rather than request a refund. Also it's very likely people will play it for 2 hours before getting bored, at which point they won't be able to request refund regardless. What a shame. I at least hope players will destroy that game in steam reviews to discourage potential buyers from buying it.
I think that's the real problem here. Game developers have literally no risk involved when writing a game. In this case, they obviously had the cash available to get in some power PR, and it worked.
The game could have just been based on a single planet, and it would still sell well. No refunds means pure profit. The dev team probably don't care that it will get trashed by players AFTER they bought it - they'll get their few million dollar payout, retire and fade into obscurity.
I get the distinct impression that Sean told his team 'This is what I want', they tried to deliver, but it just took too long. Couple of the dev's kids died through malnutrition, and they decided to release early to prevent further spousal abuse. Hence the stickers.
It's possible they have some of the multiplayer code working, but I reckon it had to be released before they could get it 100% functional. Sensible Sean would have announced this prior to launch, apologised, and promised a free update as soon as it was ready. Weasel Sean chose to cover the boxes with stickers.
This game deserves to tank hard purely down to Weasel Sean's attitude to well, everything.

I think this is a case where the hype fed the PR to get even crazier, gaining more hype, in a loop of hype.
Game looked like a chill game, Sean sounded a bit like Moleyneux, game still looks chill. Not sure why it's 60€ on Steam, GoG is cheaper. I might pick it up, will likely get me at least 15-20 hours of fun exploring, crafting and finding stuff. I can see worse games for that price.

Everytning is true except "Game developers have literally no risk involved when writing a game."

Just look at Giant Bomb.
Inside = 16 min Quick Look
No Man's Sky = 1 hour 50 min "Quick" Look and a 2 hour stream
Not anymore. Now all you gotta do is ask gullible PC Master Race to kickstart your project and then ,when your game is mostly done, get in touch with some publishers and release it on consoles.

It's a rather short 2d adventure game. What's there to "quick look" at for more than 16 min?
