Denuvo is a tool for asshole publishers that have screwed their "fanbase" over so many times that they can't rely on goodwill anymore. Witcher 3 proves that you do NOT need copy protection but that means these companies would have to start behaving ethically and fat chance of that ... .
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold near to 10 million copies worldwide
Quote:
During infoShare 2016, Artur Kurasinski interviewed CD Projekt RED’s CEO, Marcin Iwinski, who revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold nearly 10 million copies worldwide.
As Marcin said when asked about the sales of their games:
“We were totally overwhelmed because, honestly, we were not expecting such a degree of success. But sales-wise, The Witcher series has sold over 20 million worldwide, out of which almost half of it is from The Witcher 3. So we practically doubled the sales of the series.”
Later on, Marcin re-confirmed that number:
“Generally I think with The Witcher 3, and it was the case with The Witcher 2 as well, we released our game without any copy protection. So on day-one you could download the game from GOG and give it to a friend – enemy as well – but give it to a friend, on a memory stick, it works. And still we sold near to 10 million copies across all three platforms.”
Unfortunately we don’t have any numbers for the GOG version, however we do know that the game has sold near 2 million copies on Steam.
So around 10 million copies sold (shipped? nah they probably mean actually sold.) and on PC roughly 2 million are from Steam (That's very good as far as I'm aware.) and then a unknown amount on GOG (and retail?) possibly some half a million to a million more.
That makes roughly six million sales on console compared to three on PC, not sure what the development cost was for the game but I guess three million sales would have covered most if not all of it but the extra six million via PS4 and XBO? Yeah I can see why developers focus on console platforms if it can triple sales like that.
(Separated though it could mean PC, PS4 and XBO have roughly three million sales each although I guess it's not quite that even and it's generally always PC and consoles, not PC and XBO and PS4 so yeah.)
Hopefully even so their upcoming games will still have PC in focus even if it consoles might be the main target and primary focus.
(Well they've had them in mind for some time at least, fumbling about initially with contracting for a port and update of the first Witcher which ultimately fell through.)
Wonder if this will have any impact on Cyberpunk 2077's development (Hope I got that name right.) guess we'll see.
Also shows that the game has established itself as a pretty popular franchise regardless of which platform sold best, Witcher 1 had like what, somewhat like a 1 million sales when that was important and then Witcher 2 did a bit better and another boost when the X360 version was released (PS3 didn't get a port.) and now with Witcher 3 multi-platform from the get-go and selling exceptionally well.
(A fourth Witcher game is probably not entirely out of the question even if Geralt is semi-retired, might depend on what the author of the series allows for as well I guess?)
EDIT: Also Witcher 2 wasn't entirely DRM free (due to publisher meddling.), GOG version was the only one that was but there were multiple versions (Retail and Steam.) of the game even if the developers defied the publisher and stripped the DRM out with the first patch. (Causing a bit of legal drama.)
Deleted my post since you did say that means about 6m sale for consoles...yet you only had 3 for PC, so a million went missing there But anyway, I'm sure PC numbers are over 4 million now, total (Steam+GOG(retail))
Yeah I averaged it a bit since the article said "almost 10 million copies sold." meaning it's 9.x million somewhere so rounded down to something like 3.3 million if sales somehow could have been even across each separate system.
I had no idea GOG had potentially outsold Steam however, no idea they had gotten that popular for only recently focusing on full retail games.
(At least I think it was only recently they changed that policy with Witcher 3's launch being a bit of a test bed as the first full-priced title sold on GOG instead of primarily DOS/Win32 games that are almost "abandonware" status even if that's not a entirely correct term.)
Hmm I think you got Witcher 2 & 3 confused there. It was TW2 that was one of the first full budget games to appear. They sold full price games such as Age of Wonders 3 far before TW3.
Headache, Bob. Good for taking screenshots though.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
What the hell... I waited through that whole thing to see what combat looked like in first person and when he FINALLY spawns a guy in, he fights I third person?
I finally prepared my body and my game install for blood and wine. damn did they change the gui a lot. they didn't solve the slow opening of certain inventory tabs when you have a ton of items, but it does seem more organized now. the map on the other hand, feels more cluttered now, almost too busy. Oh well, I shall adapt.
Wish me luck men as I embark on the final part of geraldura 3 adventure.
Features:
- Immersive first person camera that properly follows Geralt’s body.
- Customizable FOV (in range from 1 to 110).
- Customizable, separate X and Y axis mouse sensitivity.
- Optional, first-person-only DOF effect.
- Optional, first-person-only “do not disturb” mode that will allow you to avoid combat as long as you’re in first person mode.
- Entirely non-conflicting setup, compatible with all mods and all game versions from 1.08 up.
Known issues:
- Complex interiors (Kaer morhen/Kaer Trolde) have some minor streaming issues.
- Game will hide NPCs that are very close to the camera.
Limitations:
- Movement scheme is identical in first person as in third person(no strafing, backedaling, etc.)
- Mouse movement has “floaty” behavior when moving (intended behavior, required to improving movement controls).
- Horseback riding and combat are currently not supported, you will get automatically booted out of the first person mode if such event occurs.
- Requires manual hooking after each level load (tradeoff for being non-conflicting mod).
I guess CD Project might squeeze in one or two more patches for the game although I haven't heard anything, involving the community more and doing open beta tests and having save data and such sent would likely have helped a lot though even well known longtime community made fixes still haven't been patched so eh I guess just as Bethesda they're focusing on larger more critical issues and engine problems which isn't necessarily bad although the limited modding tools means there's a limit to what can be fixed via modifications.
Will finally be able to play this in a few days, just ordered a brand new gaming rig.
Any mods you guys think are essential? Graphic enhancements and such?
Do you recommend controller or m/k?
Controller by far, its third person after all, so a controller is superior. Also the fighting just doesn't feel right with m/k imo.. With a controller you get cues by the rumble feature, i think its a great implementation + you get analog control over your movement speed, not possible with a mouse.
From what they've said earlier there will be no GOTY version.. but yeah the game is buggy. funny how so many people just loooove to bash Betheseda for "buggy games", imo this is just as buggy, it comes with the territory (open world games).
I run these mods:
Auto apply oil is something i probably couldnt play without. The slow motion combat is great too, it never gets old for me (love this in the fallout games too).
Mostly QoL mods, AutoLoot's nice in that you can configure it to grab only herbs, for example.
Crossbow damage boost is mandatory for NG+ because otherwise the crossbow damage is completely fucked and you have no way to handle drowners underwater.
Along with all the suggestions, I'll add the most important one for me, which is to disable the mini-map and use the FriendlyHUD instead for proper navigation. The Batwitcher senses and non-invasive markers will take care of everything.
I would honestly not recommend any graphical mods, since in my opinion the ones available simply alter the lighting in an inconsistent way and don't actually add any of the ol' sexy effects (rip :'(). The best way is to use Reshade for the Smaa and sharpening (both better than the default ones available in the options) and subtle color tweaks depending on your taste.
edit:
And M/K of course with the alternating controlling method as Guy_Incognito mentioned. It also depends though..on your level of peasantry
Alt control doesn't affect combat movement at all, does it? It's just for faster turns and such when you're exploring, which is fine, but I got used to the looser responsiveness during the first playthrough already.
