They better hope they sell a shitload of copies. What with paying off Sky and now this lot, not to mention actually developing the game, they must be in hock up to their eyeballs. What are the odds on an announcement in a few months that Hello Games has gone bankrupt and/or been bought out by Sony?

Deus Ex did however have a sequel with a entirely different target platform and that showed...
(XBox-O - for Org since 1 is already taken. - didn't have the whole LIVE thing in place yet though so DLC's were avoided.)

The graphics were boosted by updating to UE2.x and then pushing that even higher by customizing it and well it performed pretty poorly as a result.
(Also affected the PC version and to keep it playable areas were severely reduced in size and chopped up into separately loaded zones.)

Complexity was almost entirely gone too as the game became pretty linear instead and the entire ending can be decided on from just one final choice where I think all you do is press a button for whatever faction you want to give whatever it was too.

It didn't have DLC though as I don't think there was a easy DLC system in place like there is now with both PS Store and XBox LIVE.

Also no pre-order extras far as I remember unless some retail shops did their own bundles which happened on occasion.
(This was also more of a thing for the next console generation with the X360 and PS3)

Innovation eh I guess they tried to retain parts of the first game but nowhere near as well implemented.

EDIT: Pretty much exact the same process for Thief 3 too, AI was a bit of a joke and levels weren't nearly as big before you had to go through a loading zone plus the mini-game thing with lockpicking.
(Human Revolution definitively ended up better than Thief 4 though when it came to the following console generation and reviving these franchises again.)

EDIT: Oh right this.
Quote:

Unfortunately, the way the world is, all publishers care about is bottom line profit.

Yeah around the 2000's gaming was slowly moving towards a multi-million (And then billion.) dollar industry and well we can see how that turned out, I guess one can use EA/Origin as a early example of this with them acquiring several development studios and then those just fell apart due to publisher decisions and meddling.
(And now these day's some of the larger publishers can spend millions of dollars on just marketing and promo events.)

EDIT: Of course with how lucrative this business can be if you do succeed there's pretty fierce competition and it does take a lot of money to develop these "AAA" tier games what with fancy visuals, sounds, physics and whatnot.
(Animation studios alone is probably pretty costly and time consuming for motion capture and then you have music composition and voice recording from sometimes very famous actors and whatnot.)

Although on occasion indie gaming can show some pretty amazing growth as well. Smile
(And a thousand and one copies in a attempt to do the same...)

The digital industry is also one of the few were you seem to get away with treating customers like total idiots or completely exploit them with deceptive marketing and hyping up features that might not even be in the final product at all.
(You are also frequently reminded on how you do not own the actual product, just a license for using it which can be revoked at any time, even more so now with digital distribution services and DRM systems.)

All sorts of closed-door agreements and stuff like exclusivity deals, vendor disparity and whatnot too.
(Telemetry stuff and advertisements and whatnot too hidden behind some flimsy EULA thing if even listed at all.)

EDIT: Heck even the hardware industry for said software can be problematic although generally they're at least supportive if you do encounter problems and there are more systems for your consumer rights and all that.

EDIT: Eh I guess it kinda derails the thread too much, back to No Mans Sky then hopefully at least for the developers this works out in some favorable way and they can release the game on time, Sony might be none to happy with a sudden delay like this either potentially creating another issue for said developers.
(Though if they did use that patented algorithm then without researching facts and such first it's their own problem and it might settle poorly for them depending on how this progresses.)

That video actually looked a bit boring, which is disappointing.
I pretty sure this game is going to get very repetitive very quickly.

Not, either isodemo or wait for a decent price. Wouldn't want to spend more than 20€ on what I've seen so far.

Lead dev's answer to the 'superformula' IP theft story:

https://twitter.com/NoMansSky/status/756889227095318528?lang=en

I hope the game comes out so I can at least play it, and then this company DOES turn out to have a legit claim to the IP of the code and Hello Games goes bankrupt. It would serve them right for being so dumb.

Why is it a low?
Developing such an algorithm does not consist of only a few lines of code.

Of course i have no idea how complex it really is. But i bet they spent a few months at least in the development with much brainstorming, to make it work like they want.

I wouldn't want other people to use that work too without my agreement.

Thank god we didn't have patents for thousands of years.. Otherwise we would be still living in the stone age Laughing

I am sure they also stole or at least "refered" some important parts from other similar algorithms.

They are not the first geniuses who figured out that an algorithm can create random complex shit.

You can't patent a formula. At least not in the US or Europe. It's specifically prohibited. You could patent an application of it but not the formula itself. And games wasn't one of the applications they patented. They would be hard pressed to win this in court.

More info on the arse.... http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/07/no-mans-sky-faces-potential-patent-fight-over-use-of-superformula/

No Man's Sky has been delayed three days on PC
Quote:
Three days, to be exact. According to the game's official site, this PC release won't launch until 12th August. It will be available on Steam, GOG, the Humble Store, and iam8bit where you can snag the $150 Explorer's Edition.

Conversely, the PS4 version will arrive in Europe on 10th August and North America on 9th August.

Buttfucking PC users even more. A wonder they didn't make it an console exclusive for much longer.
But i guess money ran out.
