Hi all,
I have a few PCs at home I use for LANs when mates come over. One of them is an i5 3750k which currently has a 670 in it. I originally had a 670 sli but gave one of the 670s to a mate.
I'm now getting a 770 and was wondering what the best option would be out of:

1. Replace the current 670 with the 770
Or
2. Trade the 670 back from my mate with the 770 and then go back to 670 sli

So it's really, 770 or 670 sli?

This will all have zero cost involved and it's really just a matter of what is going to perform better overall.

make a list of games you guys like to play on LAN's. if it's games where the SLI profile gives good scaling, and the game isn't cpu limited, then SLI is the better choice.

in cpu limited games and games with bad SLI support, the 770 is better.

for example, if you guys play RTS's like total war series or civ, no point for SLI. if it's something like cs:go where you want as much FPS as possible and the game doesn't eat CPU's for breakfast, then SLI will be better.

We do play CSGO a lot, arma3, some Moba's, swat 4 , rocket league, r6 siege ,random rts' and older games (which I know won't much difference).

Since I haven't been using sli for a while just wondering if more newer games use it more as really the older games won't matter.

Also is is on a 1080p 120htz monitor.

i'd personally go with the 770 with those games in mind.

i'd think only CS:go from those games would noticeably benefit from SLI.

Thanks, admittedly even with just the single 670 atm CSGO gets close to 200 fps

SLI= no way to fiddle with that kinda thing.
More heat, more noise, more power consumption, not all games support it fully, and its not a 2x fps boost.

Except if that 670 sli is a magic thing and boosts fps like 5000x Very Happy
Or if you like a heaty room, and the bigger the power bill the better than sure enough, sli is a dream come true.

But thats just my opinion. Smile

And another aspect to think about: Your 670 sli would benefit you with a performance that can be achieved by using a more powerful single card, just buy the card that is around the same performance as you SLI would be. That way you always benefit from that performance (not just in particular games).

Thanks,
Yeah, the 670s is from my setup 2 upgrades ago. Since then I buy the most powerful single card.

The reason I asked this question was because this is the stuff I have lying around and no spending involved. The only concern I had was that for me to go back to sli ( for a spare PC) was that I needed to trade the 770 to my mate to get the second 670 back.

I'll just stick with the single 770.

My partner thinks I'm mad, I have 4 PCs, i7 6700k + 1080, i5 3750k + 770, i5 2500k + 670 and i7 920 + 7950. This is all for the sake of a few handful of LANs I have a year with mates no longer able to keep up with PCs due to family. Someone has to keep the tradition alive Smile

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever stop doing it. I'm 33 and got some mates approaching 40 that still come over.

Just wish there were more LAN games

Yeah man definitely, there are too few new games that support lan these days. But about the games are you then buying the games 4 times or just cracking them ? Smile

Depends on the game, try to find cheap 4 packs on humble bundles etc but sometimes I need to acquire them. For instance, arma3 apex I've just tested with coop and works fine which I think will feature at next month's LAN. There was no way I was forking out 4 copies of arma3 and apex although I do have 2 legit copies of arma3.

Play a bit of rocket league online in a team so I got legit copies for that.

At the end of the day, I'll avoid paying for multiple copies if I can as it adds up quickly but if the only way to play is to pay for it and it's worth it then I will get it.

Lucky all my mates understand the effort involved and typically pay for a copy to add to the PCs

Also, considering new LAN games are typically indie games they end up being a bit cheaper.

My wife is off to London to work for 3 months so I've given everyone the heads up of a constant 3 month LAN
