|
 |
Probably a silly question but you never know if you don't ask.
I am having a damn hard time trying to properly burn CD-i images (yes the horrible console from Philips).
I can burn the bin/cue images fine, but as soon as it's in .ccd/.sub/.img format, I can't seem to figure it out.
Usually I use IMGBURN but I thought I saw that it doesn't fully know how to handle the .sub files.
So I went with CloneCD and tried various settings and was not able to get them to boot at all.
Any ideas? Or do I continue my reign of king of the dead threads?

Man these games are pure gold.
@Janz,
Yah have tried every variation of that, won't boot in the machine though.
Could be the images are awful, good point. I'll try to find another.

Look for the Redump collection, those images should work perfectly and with IMGburn. Had some problems with a different collection so ended up with Redump and fared a lot better.

Specifically I can't get "The Apprentice" to work...
I'll try to find this "redump" collection!

as a matter of fact that is one of the games which needs to be ripped with clonecd properly. so most likely the image is just broken, does it show the needed pregap data mode 2 in the status window/overview when loading the image.ccd into clonecd?

Good question, I also started to investigate heavily into this apparent "CD-i Ready" format after I ran out of CD-Rs..
I'll have to double check that next time when I get some more discs. I do have multiple, different, copies of the game now though (thanks Morph!) so hopefully I can figure this damn thing out!

It's a shame even the best CD-I emulator is kinda wonky. It works with most titles ... more or less ... but don't expect too much.
When it comes to early CD consoles, the 3DO is a lot more interesting if you ask me. It had many unique titles or improvements over PC games (Wolfenstein 3D, Star Control II, etc.).

I have both consoles, maybe I should check out the 3DO more.

There's a lot of crap on 3DO as well... after I was done cleaning my roms with games I actually wanted to play or that were the better versions out there. Well, there was not much left.
That being said: ofcourse still better than the CD-I catalogue... But eh, as a collector you usually want to have the shitty stuff as well
Btw Stooz, for the burning that fails could be something as silly as your CD-I not liking the brand you are using or that you need to burn at a slower speed. They used to have some good topics on UG about that so maybe ask around there. Must be a few people around that are still active with their CD-I

Hah, true.. I feel like it might be a combination of sorts. As I had just burned another title using the same CD-R brand on the same machine/same burner, and it boots just fine. Must be something to do with that stupid "CD-i Ready" format being used for The Apprentice..
Step 1 is get more discs.

SegaCD has some amazing stuff for sure, some of my favorite RPGs on there, and has the absolute best version of Lunar on there. I've hated every re-creation of that game after the SegaCD version.
Went through Popful Mail not too long ago.

Alright, got some FRESH CD-Rs, gonna' give this damn thing another shot.
Going to try CloneCD again.
Here we go...
ATTEMPT #1:
Ok, CloneCD running good, saw some PreGap data in there, did "Data" as the choice. Trying 4x speed this time instead of "MAX" which I did last time.
RESULT #1:
FAILURE. Does the same thing it always does. Just sits on the main menu screen and says "DISC" and does nothing.
ATTEMPT #2:
Going back to the other image I have which is bin/cue and trying IMGBurn. Guess these discs only support 16x lowest speed, going with that.
RESULT #2:
Fail. Main menu -> "DISC"
ATTEMPT #3:
Going to try to burn something else, see what happens. Have successfully burned several other CD-i titles with this very same drive.
RESULT #3:
Just successfully burned Mad Dog II. Same drive, same discs.

What brand are you using btw?
The ones I usually used for fickle systems were either: BASF, Emtec or TDK's (that one rarely though). Sony were one of the quality brands that weren't that great for emu purposes. Then again I'm talking about 10 years ago or so.

lol...
Well that figures..
Sent one more time through using original image + CloneCD at 16x for the heck of it...
In the meantime, went up to tear open another computer to try another drive as a test. Came back and tried the new disc and it finally goddamn worked.
No idea why, but it finally works.
YAY!

Probably the machine being sensitive to some brands. Since it working sounds really random
Glad it did finally work though, enjoy!

Something damn fishy here.. and now it's starting to make sense, maybe? I guess?
I must have gotten really lucky with the game booting up when it did...
Now it takes me like (what feels like) 100 attempts to get the disc to run. And even then, sometimes in the middle of the game, it will stop and tell me I have a dirty disc.
Some games run absolutely flawlessly... so it must either still be a poor burn, or the laser is crapping out.. which I have read about for these systems. And they look annoying to replace.
Either way, gave the whole thing a good cleaning and still things did not run well. Craapppppp.

Try BurnCycle from CDI ... or CDI version of INCA ... also Hotel Mario is great ... and well Thunder In Paradise that FMV rail shooter is FUN with Hulk Hogan
and about emulation on PC , it works ... but to run that emu you have to go an extra mile , they are 3 emus that work well ... one for 2d games , one for FMV games ... all games can be emulated ... even that ehm Playboy Massage
or Virtual stripper aka Poker ... and many more
and the Video Standard for those CDs are VCD ... so when you burn those games burn them as VCD !!! with 4x

I'm going to go ahead and conclude that it was the PC and/or disc drive I was using.
Re-assembled my old X360 burning machine and got this game running on the first try.
