Well there was a outcry a while back over the lack of ethnicity (and gender.) of protagonists in modern games, between these two games though it's a little more nuanced than that, or at least I hope there's a bit more depth to it.
(Though if you really want to break it down I guess that above might kinda work as a summary although I actually don't know the backstory of the guy in Mafia 3 he's some sort of enforcer or lieutenant of the Mafia or some such, was there ever a black Don?)
I have no idea what I'm writing anymore, then again I guess that's about the same as the story and "quality" of the writing in most modern games too.
(Well that kinda was a problem way back when I was a kid too, IE Belmont has been cursed by Dracula and must now break it, how? by collecting six specific body parts - one of which is a ring - and resurrect Dracula and then kill him again and that somehow breaks the curse.)
(Then again nobody really expected a epic novel from a NES or SNES game though some of the released games tried and did pretty well with the platforms limitations in mind...)
EDIT: Whatever, I'm sure either game can provide some hours of entertainment driving around the city causing chaos in general while following whatever wacky plot the writers came up with.
(This ball on a string is a effective melee weapon...)
(But can you hack sewer pipes?)
(And now that we know the developers religious, ethical and even sexual beliefs and preferences what else could they add to the disclaimer notice before the main menu loads?)
It's a weird beast, some aspects look decent whereas others feel very gamey/too arcade-oriented to me (it mixes multiple mechanics from the AAA world like a hungry cookie monster). I guess time will tell
But regardless of the final outcome, I still think that calling it Mafia 3 was a silly thing to do :<

Yup, likewise. It's not a Mafia game and could just as easily stood alone as its own self contained game.
~edit~
Finally saw the 20 minute footage and it's hyped me up even more, it looked great! Some dodgy visuals but mostly gorgeous with damned impressive lighting and facial animations. I'm definitely looking forward to this, way more than SJW Dogs. That Bad Moon Rising cover at the end was awesome, I could have sworn it was Leonard Cohen but it turns out it's from a new band called "Mourning Ritual"
.... though it's from 2014, so I hope it's just for the trailer as it really has no place in the base game. Even the original Bad Moon Rising, from Creedence Clearwater Rival, shouldn't *really* be in the game since Mafia 3 is set in 1968 and BMR didn't come out until 1969 -- though I'm willing to overlook that
I really liked what they showed during E3. The dev team seems to build a great game, while the publisher slapped a Mafia tag on it. Publishers need to understand that using a big name can be a curse rather than a blessing if you're doing a real sequel.
It's not a Mafia game for me when the main plot is you killing off the Mafia.
Some of the things are good (soundtrack, graphics in most places), some look terrible (the swamp mission, there's a guy clearly within your sight, but of course he has to have a "20 M" marker on him so you don't miss him ), some are hard to judge until you play, but seem really bad (driving).
It looks more like Godfather 3 than Mafia 3. You take over districts, give them to your lieutenants etc.
The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
