It all depends on what you are looking for.
OFP has a great campaign and is great fun and realistic. On the other hand the MP kinda sucks ass.
BF2 is like the previous BF titles. Same kind of gameplay only modern warfare and more teamwork (on more serious servers atleast).
I love both and I bought both. BF2 I play daily and OFP I played to death ever since it was released until about 1 year ago.

BF2 = Fun, play around, arcade, game, kewl MP for the kicks.
Operation Flashpoint = Realism, huge world, more solid feel, less "arcade", magnificent SP, excellent MP [those who say it isn't, ought to try playing it with some better team mates].
In the graphics and sound department, there's no contest between them - but Operation Flashpoint is clearly the winner in terms of combat simulation.
The best "game" for the commercial market is BF2 though. And the kids love it.
Yes, yes I'm back.

That's the problem right there. Sure its great fun if you are fortunate enough to find a serious and well admin'ed/ maintained server. On the other hand, if you're not, the amount of idiocy running rampant can truly ruin the experience. There are some great moments to be had, but the chance of experiencing them varies on where/when you play.
I'm ashamed to say it, but I have never had the privellige of playing OFP. I played the demo when it first came out AGES ago. I recall it being very difficult (granted..how many years ago was that?)
I wanted to grab it a while ago....but then I started reading about all the expansions/patches/mods/graphics updates...and was a bit lost. So I said fuck it, I'll wait for the sequel.
This thread kinda renewed my interest though...

I used to have tons of fun in Operation Flashpoint. BF2 gives an amazing experience at times. I really wish they would implement something to negate or not reward chopper and jet pilots points when they crash into other vehicles purposely though. Do not even begin to say it's a valid tactic of the game. Where is the semi-realism in that? No jet or chopper pilot will be going back home to their wives or children if they perform that type of action.

Since this thread is about tactical games I will post this much promising HL2 mod
http://www.insurgencymod.net/info.php?p=features
I believe it will give a new feeling to this type of games and certainly belongs in this category of gameplay. A bit of BF2, OFP, etc and some more spice. All the weapons will have iron sights and no crosshair.

i can attest that is definitely worth sorting through all the patches/mods/addons to experience this game. it stands head and shoulders above all other fps/battle sims out there. the sheer depth and realism overshadow any graphical/sound shortcomings (but there are some great texture/model addons which update the game). the feeling you get the first times you enter battle, there is this sense of fear and disorientation. you jump out of a truck, have five seconds to hit the ground, get to cover, find out who is shooting from where, just trying to stay alive, much less shoot back. is that the enemy flanking us, or our support squad coming in from the left? do i fire? do i have time to decide? the ai is very good, and will surprise you and you will die alot.
armed assault is going to be awesome (after about ten patches), but don't miss out on operation flashpoint.
okay, i know there are couple of OFP threads already, but i'd really like to know your opinion.
well, the thing is that i haven't try Battlefield 2 yet - yeah, how gay is that? :P
so, can some one say which one is more combat and realistic?
to me personally, Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam left little bit too arcade impression.
OFP is tried to make as realistic as it can be - even with the mods!
all the answers are Welcome! :D
The Mission editor alone kills BF2 and its predecessors, the dynamic gameplay and half realism which surrounds the game and its 20 square miles of a level is astonishing and very very original.

This game rocks. With servers of up to 150 players, and the type of teamwork that needs to exist in this game is awesome.
You can get the original and the EP from EBgames for like $40, and its well worth the purchase. The graphics aren't quite as slick as BF2, but they're quite servicable, and the sheer amount of vehicles and weapons really makes great. They don't have fighter planes, but they do have big boats with onboard guns, giant ferrys for moving land vehicles and a number of choppers. They really mix the land and naval combat well in the game.

Isn't Joint Ops developed by Novalogic?
Their wargames always have a feeling of utter and complete cheesiness in my opinion.
Black Hawk Down for example..great adreneline rush, but AI dumb as rocks.
Is Novaworld stable? Do people still play JoinOps? Is there an Anticheat system in place?
Gogamer has the original + xpack for $20 (Joint Operations: Combined Arms).
Im considering it but not sure...

shame on you for even thinking about that! Its an insult to compare ofp with BF2
I got both, and while BF2 has fun and great moments in mp, its absolutely nothing compared to a good game of OFP. Atmosphere, immersion, I don't think any other game ever featured such an intense gameplay experience like OFP. The game doesn't even need MP to deliver that immense feeling of immersion, the SP and the AI are excellent enough.
Sure graphics don't stand a thing anymore to BF2 when it comes to effects, but the game still looks extremely realistic because of its realisitc colour toning. Everything looks extremely realistic despite the lack of next gen effects. And you immediately forget the graphics once your in the game anyway.
And if it weren't enough, the mod scene is really active and has brought tons of great graphics mods and total conversions.

get it. its worth every cent. And you got millions of addons out there
Btw, just get the gold edition. Its got all things you need, the 2 official addons that is. Then just download the newest patch (theres one especially for the goty version). Then, get ECP or FFUR, both in the newest versions. They're the best graphics and gameplay addons around (you can install them parallely). Done, your ready.

I recently aquired the GOTY edition so I could try out these mods. So far I've tried ECP 1.085, FFUR and Y2K3.
Of those three I liked ECP best but it doesn't include new units or animations like the others.
So I want to know, is there an ECP-compatible mod-pack available that includes all the new units and animations?

I've never played Black Hawk Down, but from what I hear its nothing like Joint ops, there is nothing cheesy about it that I've found. Its not really that different from BF2, just slightly different tactics (because of a greater focus on water in maps) and not as slick graphics. There are still lots of servers going for it, and I've never had problems with novaworld

I put off playing OFP for a long time, and I must say i'm not really pleased initially here.
I instaleld GOTY and patched up to 1.96, but whenever I start the game my windows mouse cursor doesn't go away. When I get into the game I have the windows one floating around and the game one (Which don't line up)
Anyway to fix this?

The mouse-cursor issue can be fixed by alt-tabbing out, and then in again. Had the same problem.

or, immediately after you double-click the icon to start, move your cursor all the way to the top right, off the screen, during the intro splash. should take care of it.
or, the best way: set the video options in OFP to some other than what you run windows in. either a differen res, bit depth, or refresh rate. this also makes alt-tabbing more stable.

I thought alt-tabbing was at its best when your desktop and applications were at the same res, refresh rate, etc?

yeah, but for OFP it's the opposite. it's a commonly discussed remedy to alt-tab crashes over at the official forums.

So far, you can use all mods with ECP that don't deliver a new config file, so mods who just deliver new units or islands like The Unsung (vietnam war mod) will work great with ECP.
If you want to play the standard game (resistance campaign flashpoint campaign etc) with new units and you want to keep using ECP, then you'll have to wait for the newest version of EnhancedECP (EECP) which is still in the works (old versions dont work with the newest ECP version).
An alternative could be FFUR, another total conversion modpack like ECP, but also includes new units from the beginning. You can even choose if you'd like to play in a winter setting, asia setting, desert setting etc.
Both have their strengths, its question of personal preferences.

I'm finding this to be an extremely frustrating game and honestly too hard even on the "Cadet" setting.
I've attempted the convey mission (your real first one) about 10 times now, and I thought I'd finally gotten it, but as I was approachign the truck (my men were already in) to get out of there and head back to base, now there are suddenly 4 or 5 soldiers attacking me, and of course I died.
For this mission does it make a difference if I loot all the guns off bodies and put them in tthe truck before heading back? If so, is there a quick way to do it?

it saves with cehckpoints.. thats not the issue, the issue is simply that its stupidly hard. There is no cover in the mission, and you get slaughtered very quickly (sorry by a handful of infantry against multiple tanks, and very little anti-tank weaponry isn't sporting, especially when the enemy has at least as many infantry as you to begin with)

I found OFP were too easy after awhile? I remember last time I played the orginal campaign (NATO) and my personal mission was to kill EVERYTHING on the map before completing the mission.
I wonder how the russians felt when 4 of their T80 gets blown up by a rambo-like soldier only equiped with an AK47 and a LAW/RPG.
But damn it was a feeling when I started to master the ability to shot down chopers too! Perfect timing with a LAW and that attack helicopter is history!
I came to the last mission with couple of thosand killed.
Rambo lives.
