Many of those developers have actually a decent curriculum; Surreal Software for instance made the glorious Drakan, and even Terminal Reality developed some rough gems like the BloodRayne games and Ghostbusters (a genuinely good game, unlike the recent reboob tie-in abortion). Even Pyro's Imperial Glory wasn't that bad to be honest, although the Commandos series will always remain their masterpiece, that goes without saying.
Wasn't Syndicate Wars pretty great? (btw how was satellite reign?)
IIRC Syndicate Wars got some heat back then because of the change to 3D and some bugs?
I had no problems at all with that game, and really enjoyed it. Especially the destruction was fun.
Satellite Reign plays good, looks great, runs bad.
I played through it and enjoyed it too.
________
G-Police and The Devil Inside i really enjoyed and didn't get the feeling of them being crap.

G-Police reminds me of something, I probably played that game too but I remember some vague GTA 3 clone, Urban City? Urban Commando? I'll have to check.
(It wasn't the greatest game but I enjoyed it for a while.)
EDIT: Of course talking about Commando the Commandos series and Desperado were fun too although Commandos whatever in 3D wasn't the best in that installment.
(And the old Army Men games and whatnot, damn I'm getting old ha ha.)
Ecstatica 1 and 2 even way earlier had their moments too even if controls were utter crap and got you killed frequently but they were also surprisingly open ended and allowed for exploring and surprisingly also featured high level of violence and gore and even full frontal male and female nudity and sex humor.
(Well humor and humor, for the main character getting ahem raped - well kissed. - to death by a fat blonde going commando might not have been too funny...)
(While on that track Dungeon Keeper 1 had a outro with lord Goody-Goody being turned into a female troll and then the camera panned away as a horde of male trolls did, something.)

Urban Chaos
It wasn't a GTA3 clone, in fact it came out almost 2 years before it,
basically being the first GTA-style game in 3D.
Fighting Fantasy! I loved those books when I was a youngling. I never knew any got turned into PC games (not that I had a PC until I reached my late teens).
Now now now these were horrible games, try it out they do suck
But Gpolice was horrible
But hands down the worst game I've played was Guardian of darkness from Cryo. I remember when I was a kid and I remember how bad I thought it was. Probably the worst game I've tried.

game is fucking awesome.
Good story. Good characters. Gameplay was solid. They ported over proper platformer controls to an open world type game. The El Mariachi type baddies were sweet. The guy on the roof wanting to kill himself.
