So this build will probably not happen until late August, so ~2 months from now, mostly because summer is here and I won't be gaming A LOT until fall, and because I hope the price of the GPU will drop after the initial release. My current build is turns two years old in November, and I usually build a new one after two years..

So here's the current setup:
- 4790k @ 4.5Ghz, Corsair H110i
- MSI Z97 Gaming 5
- 16 Gb BallistiX 1600Mhz DDR3
- Two GTX970 Windforce OC SLI
- EVGA Supernova G2 750W 80+ Gold
- Fractal Define R4

Annnd, the planned new build is:
- i7 6700k with some sort of water cooling system like the H100i.
- 32 Gb (2x16) Crucial BallistiX Sport DDR4
- MSI Z170A Krait Gaming 3X
- Fractal Edison 750W 80+ Gold
- Fractal Define R5
- GTX 1080 - either G1 Gaming, STRIX, EVGA FTW or any similar model, whatever is cheapest at the time.

Now, the reason I'm buying most things new, is because it's so much easier to sell a near complete PC rather than in parts. The only things I'm keeping are my SSD and HDDs. I'm thinking I can absolutely get just under half of the above parts' price for the old one.

The question of "worth it" is hard to answer here, I know, since I'm aware my current PC is good in itself. But please, if you can talk me down from this, I'm all ears!

I not only game on my PC, I edit large PSDs in Photoshop CC, a lot of vector work in Illustrator, edit movies with Premiere etc. Having a fast and capable PC is wonderful in these applications.

There is no point of upgrading 4790K to 6700K unless you have too much money to waste. If I would be you I would only upgrade the GPU (or even get 2 of them). Double your current RAM to 32GB if you are really running out of 16?

If you want the best out there then go for X99 platfrom and some 6-8 core CPU but then again in gaming that wont help you as much as custom 1080 SLI could.

ps. EVGA's G2 PSUs are much better than Fractal's.

pss. I wouldn't go for Gigabyte's G1 because it is noisy. STRIX' cooler is not that good thanks to poor GPU & cooler contact. Zotac AMP! non Extreme can be very smart choice and it has 5 years of warranty too (might be a good value when u decide to sell the card).

Get the Corsair h115i instead. I know it's expensive but damn... that thing just blows me away. I still can't believe how good it cools.

And good choice on the R5. I bought it and the h115i 2 weeks ago and installed the radiator in the front. Both the case and the cooler are amazing.

Yeah and +1 for what escalibur said regarding the CPU.. pointless imho. Or maybe not... since you said you're not only gaming. Really depends.

since you aren't recommending a purchase of used and/or old tech, I agree Very Happy

Just get a 1080 and keep that money for the next intel tick or tock. the differences between the two cpu's will be most noticeable in a multigpu setup. for a single gpu setup of the 1080 kind where you will likely be playing at 1440p and 4k? you are gonna be gpu limited and won't notice the cpu benefits of the 6700k unless you are gonna be looking at the FPS counter the whole time.

that 1600mhz ram though is a sore sight in that rig. Razz

how so? Scratch Head
oh yeah 1 or maybe 2 fps difference if you compare it to ddr4 3ghz Laughing

like everyone said, if you have cash to burn why the heck not, personally i would, then again you won't see much of a difference upgrading that cpu/mobo/ram
instead get rid of crippled 970's and get one strong card 1070 or 1080, better performance and your electrical bill

Well, I hear ya, I might hold off on upgrading the entire rig then.. The 1080 and maybe a nice 27" Free/G-sync monitor instead? Smile

That's not the case anymore, especially for intel CPU's. for a well balanced rig you want fast RAM. fallout 4 is an extreme example, but there are many others. sure, there are some titles where it won't matter, but it CPU limited scenarios, your RAM will impact your framerate. and even more importantly, frame times.

Please remember that Skylake can use faster RAM much more efficiently than Haswell. They are definitely 1:1 even if you compare i3 to i3.

yeah i've seen that video and i learned to take DF video's with the grain of salt when it comes to pc benchmarks, they are promoted by nV and intel, and there was a video where they showed titan x performing significantly worse than 1070, which is not the case irl
i upgraded from ddr3 1333mhz to ddr4 2400 and there is practically no difference

again if you have a good deal like i had one should defo upgrade, i switched from 3770 to 6700 and didn't pay a dime Very Happy

I guess we play different stuff. I upgraded from 1600 to 2400mhz ddr3, and have already seen improvements on my 4670k in cpu limited scenarios.i'll try to shadowplay a comparison between 1600 and 2400 in the next demanding game I play if I notice a difference.

and my experience with df foundry vids has been pretty positive. when I had the 7970ghz edition, I actually tested the same scene they use in far cry 4, and got pretty much the same results they had in their 280x bench vid.

But only if you are CPU bound on a lower/older chip. at that point why upgrade the ram to newer Higher speeds vs just getting a new CPU?
Its a bit old, but as far as I know it still applies, because DDR4 hasnt changed tech wise. Speed tradeoff for latency which means not much difference in gaming or 'user' end performance. :

here are my arma 3 results from today to put some perspective into cpu/ram speed effects in CPU demanding titles.

anyways, downloaded the "test another arma benchmark" scenario from steam to test the CPU/ram speed impact on arma.

Well, thank you all for your replies, always appreciated. I think I might stay with the PC but replace the 970s with a factory overclocked 1080 after the summer, that is definitely happening.
