Going to take a run at this again now that I have a single GPU, it's downloading at a snails pace. Has anyone tried it on modern hardware in the last couple of years? I'm hoping it won't choke, but I know where hope's going to get me.
The unmodded version runs fine, but some mods like Misery gave me shitty performance.
Likewise, Misery pushes the (already unoptimized) engine so much that compromises must be made with the 970 in order to avoid drops - and still, they don't go away really . Anything above 1080p is also a no-no for me, not to mention the stuttering that with my standard HDD is omnipresent. Good ol' Stalker, so beautuful yet so anarchic

Finished CoP + SGM 2.2 + AtmosFear 3 twice a couple of years ago. No major issues on maxed settings, with a single ATI 7870 GPU, 8 GB RAM, i5 4670k. There was some stuttering on Jupiter map, usually near Yanov station, but apart from that was playable. Also on some of the new maps - Dark Valley, Army Warehouse, but only because the SGM team added a shitload of new anomalies. Even after the main campaign, when SGM spawns a huge number of zombies, it was still running fine.
(Ixi already mentioned it in the Tarkov thread, but posting it here too)

the fact that, after all these years, people still put lotsa time in modding STALKER should be a very strong indication that gamers want more of that stuff and would be ready to pay lotsa money for it. somehow, the whole industry has a broomstick so far up their asses that they just can not deliver anything like it. really, really odd

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. remains one of the most unique and engrossing gaming experiences I've had in my whole life, along the original Half-Life and the original Deus Ex.
Then again, it scares me to think what the current gaming industry would do to this franchise, if put in the wrong hands (which is most of the hands in the business right now)

The first game was great even if it was flawed in some ways but it has by far the best story progression. The second game was weak - it reused too many of the locations and didn't have a quality story.
The third ... eeh, mixed bag. By having all those STALKER factions, you kinda felt that the game was no longer you against the elements - you had STALKER bases, encountered STALKERs everywhere and the final part when you were finally alone, had a rather weak ending.
The first is still by far my favorite - its atmosphere was spot on and it had a proper story. I can imagine it's very hard to match the enigmas presented in the first game when making a sequel - heck, the entire premise was brilliant. Short of a total reboot with changes to the story, I don't know what else they can do.
Seems i have to reinstall Pripyat for this great mod soon.
I downloaded it from ModDB a couple weeks ago and it was standalone, I think only the older versions required CoP to be installed. There's also a lot of good addons for it including a rudimentary story mode for people who don't like to wander around aimlessly.
-edit nevermind I was wrong, I just tried installing the mod on a new Windows installation and it said "Call of Pripyat not detected".

I too really need to build myself a time capsule that allows me to rack up enough hours to go through the whole thing, it sounds and looks incredible from the video.
There's truly nothing like good ol' Stalker, and probably there will never be. Bittersweet, timeless cheeki breeki
Yes, MISERY 2.2 is happening! We are happy to announce that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. MISERY modification will be released in a bigger, better and faster format, in the form of version 2.2 in September 2017!
To celebrate the imminent release of the new version we have developed a completely new website for the MISERY mod, and although we are still making lots of updates on it, you are more than welcome to take a look and let us know what you think: www.themiserymod.com

Engine is fairly rough, X-Ray was ahead of the curve but hit several snags in 2005 - 2006 both due to the cuts and getting the game out and tech heading to a different direction with multi-threading instead of single-threading.
(Hit a bit of a wall there with the initial charge up to 5+ Ghz CPU's so dual and then a brief stint with tri and finally quad cores and beyond after that.)
X-Ray 1.5 with Clear Sky and 1.6 with Call of Pripyat improved on the first game which had a patch that kinda added some threading of minor stuff as I recall but it would be the 4A Engine and Metro having some of the engine coders where it would be revamped properly.
Beyond that from what I know D3D11 also only works partially in Call of Pripyat due to leakage and other issues, X-Ray 1.7 from the leaked patch and SDK which I think is also used in Lost Alpha with further updates even dropped it in favor of D3D10 though the game is also pushing the engine with the fewer but far larger maps getting back to CPU and memory constraints, it can't really be fixed and it can't really be brute-forced via superior hardware much the same as older game engine just can't take full advantage of these advancements without updates.
Still learning though but there's a lot of underlying stuff I've been slowly gaining some knowledge on and realizing just how problematic some game engines are and then the hardware and software situation from display drivers to the game engines to the OS but it's pretty minimal with how broad of a subject matter that is though it's interesting to learn but it doesn't really help much this can't really be fixed short of updating the game with some extensive code changes and well that's not happening.
Multi-threaded rendering, multi-core CPU improvements, HDD and SSD related threading and changes and x64 and freeing the memory constraints for a few things though that's a very rough very simplified description and doesn't really highlight how complex and extensive of a update it would be for these older titles.
I installed COP + some mods after completing Metro Exodus, and while I would love to play it, the stutter cannot be tamed
Even in that clip you can see the stuttery jank bleeding through
It's also 10 years old now. That went fast
How did it age for you?
Tried COP (vanilla) some weeks ago but it felt so... out... dated?
I tried Lost Alpha a while ago but my CPU is just too weak for the new, huge maps. (see JBeckmans posting on previous page why the engine has problems)
I've got to postpone playing it, but from what I saw the graphics are still fine. X-ray still got that unique look. Textures are sharp, lush vegetation, LA also has improved vegetation distance. The atmospheric and weather effects are still excellent. Where the engine shows most age are the interiors and some shadows, also inside buildings at daytime it just looks kinda wrong lighting-wise. Compared to Metro Exodus with raytracing it's amazing how far they've come.
