And I'm back with Doom again, this time doing TNT evilution, which will mean I've completed all official doom content once it's done.

Gotta admit, Doom should be studied at universities. It's just unbelievable how good of an FPS it is. Doom II enemies and weapon set is probably the best FPS starter kit ever made.

So simple, yet so freaking satisfying and fun, and hardcore at the same time.

I never even played it on release, but here I am 21 years after its release, a 30 year old fart, playing doom and nodding to myself, "yeah this is fucking it, the pinnacle of FPS games" Laughing

At least you went from two modern Callofduty's in a row to Doom and not the other way around. Very Happy

Doing that would have been like going from admiring an opus from the Renaissance, the gaming equivalent of Michelangelo's Cappella Sistina, to facing this Cool Face Laughing

basically, a lifetime is not enough to experience all that doom has to offer. We should shoot out a few usb sticks, dvd's into space as well, so it survives our planet and hopefully some aliens reverse engineer it and get to play it Very Happy

Registration for the Multiplayer Closed Alpha is live, if you Wolfenstein: The New Order on or before May 26, 2014:

The DOOM MP Closed Alpha is a series of development-driven tests designed to stress test the game’s dedicated server infrastructure in a real-world consumer environment.

So they want to do a stress test with a probably very limited active user base instead of an open alpha? Laughing

I started playing Project Brutality which is an improvement to Brutal Doom, and boy is it an improvement.
It's violence perfected. I can only recommend it, it adds so many more death animations to monsters, more guns, more monster types, multiple new spawn systems, like dynamic progression which gradually spawns more and more advanced and difficult monsters.
I just don't see why anyone would be interested in Halo: Hell, with this kinda thing around and available for free!
Go download it, it's fantastic!

Very over the top, like Brutal Doom. I prefer gameplay closer to the original, so I use the Doom Retro source port.

Each to their own. I find the original to be kinda slow in comparison. Doesn't get the adrenaline pumping in the same way.

I guess we should talk here instead of the other thread. @ixigia WTF is that noscope? No idea what it is, but it looks bad. Laughing

BTW, looking for a joke WAD that I used to play ~20 years ago. I remember it was a cartoon WAD with the bazooka or BFG being a chicken, shooting eggs. Laughing Anyone able to assist here?

Question to few doom 1 and 2 maniacs. Especially doom2.
I last played it in 1997 and years ago in zandronum.

Now I just want sp and I likedxbla version of doom2 the most even tho it have changed health packs sprites.

I have it on pc in bfg edition but this one is fucked. It's too bright, You can't configure at all anything and so on.

SO this is where it gets interesting. I found my old cd's from 1997 and there is doom2.
It's wad is dated 25.08.1994.
So I guess that's the version to play in zdoom or did they released any patches or updates after time?

Since chocolate doom, gog or just original in dosbox are too low res and too slow, Zdoom is the only option, so the choice comes down to what .wad to use?
edit: On the other hand, I dont like so many options in doom2. I just want higher resolution than original and maybe fps. Nothing else like added blood splatter and so on

If someone wants to play a great megawad, i'd recommend Valiant. Made by the same author of the amazing Vanguard (though, IMO, the "13 angry archviles" map is still unrivalled), it makes some apparently small, but actually quite significant changes to both weaponry (chaingun replaced with a minigun with a much higher fire rate, but also higher ammo consumption) and bestiary (e.g. the standard imp is replaced by a much more dangerous super imp which fires several smaller, faster fireballs). Level design is generally very good, but it starts running out of steam in the last few levels. Highlights include level 8 (slighlty gimmicky but very interesting map), a remake of the aforementioned "13 angry archviles", an incredibly atmospheric level 30 and an exhausting but very rewarding slaughtermap on secret level 31. Also, as you can see from the screens in the link above, some levels look really amazing.

Doom 2 modder spends 300 hours making a three-hour level
Quote:
Doom modder Ben Mansell made a level for Doom 2 that is so big that it takes upwards of an hour to complete. Probably a few hours for most on a first run.

Dubbed Foursite 4-in-1, this colossal stage is practically a campaign in its own right as it links four already giant levels together to one central hub.

Each of the four stages-within-a-stage culminate in a "boss room" with especially hazardous obstacles. Each of the four quadrants has a different visual style and enemy types. Once a key is acquired from each of the four quadrants, the door to the final boss can be unlocked.

Mansell noted on Reddit that it took his friend three hours to complete Foursite on their first run. Based on Mansell's 66-minute playthrough below, I can believe it. (Bear in mind that this is the designer running through it, so he knows exactly where he's going and what to do.)

On a related note, the Brutal Doom 64 will be released next week: http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom-64

Looks great, might give it a go too. Very Happy

BTW is it possible to use that one together with the 3D-models mod? (Couldn't find the name for it)

I believe it's not possible yet, because Doom 64 uses different models, and the original mod should be reworked so to speak. Who knows, maybe in the future^^

edit: This is the one for Doom:

Okay, still thanks for the research and info. Very Happy

The 2D sprites already look better than in the vanilla game. And the lighting and environments look awesome. Still, making the enemy models look a bit more modern i would have liked. Smile

Will still definately try/playthrough when the final Brutal Doom gets released.
