It's because they plan on going console for this eventually. I don't read the news.

Remember how in the grim future of the 41st millennium there was only war? Now there is also lollipops, rainbows, and candy.

Looks nice. But I don't like the cover system. Sitting in that buble until it's destroyed or they are melee'd from it. It's a step back from DOW2.

And that orbital strike Me Gusta

Yep... Looks nice indeed Smile

BTW, I haven't really played previous games, just tried a few missions and put them on my backlog Very Happy

Are they worth playing ? Only interested in a single player story side of the game.

They're some of the best games in the genre's history.

+1

Don't really remember DoW 1 anymore. But DoW 2 and it's addons were fucking awesome!

DoW2's cover just doesn't make sense in 40k, it worked for CoH, not 40k. With 40k weaponry, those puny cover made of debris would be destroyed in a flash. And in practice, those cover are pretty pointless with all the knockback, grenade effects in DoW2.

However those capture point covers are too gamey. What I think would work both in setting and tactical gameplay is if Tactical Marines have war gear upgrades that grant deploy-able bubble shields or something along those lines. Guardians had deploy-able shields in 2, and IG had Wargear that gives bubble shields.

What they have now in 3, is I'm afriad their way to dumb down the map design. With these cover points, they make for very obvious tactical objectives. Rather than resource points that are strategic targets, you would want to seize cover points to win the tactical battle. However, in 2, those were stuff like high ground, covers, bunkers, buildings, anything that is fitting to the location. These points are just obvious gameplay mechanics that is a disconnect to the world. Look how bland that map is. Imagine if there's a map full of buildings, doodads, natural covers, these points would just make it too crowded visually and in gameplay. You can't have both. So I have a feeling maps will be a lot like this one, bland, boring, empty.

Its not bad although not remotely as grim-dark but more colourful and arcade/action-like.. like DoW2 which I felt was a more a dumbed-down RTS. I'll give it a chance but I'm far more concerned about its modding potential.

My problem is that, if even a 40K game is not Grim dark, then game should be? Just like how if Diablo 3 is not gothic, then what is? With such a rich, standout setting, I just wish the art style represent the setting well. There are other setting that can benefit from having bright, vibrant colours.

But I don't have a problem with vibrant colours in a 40K game, I mean the table top models are usually painted like that anyways. My concern is stuff like the missile barrage, the explosion looks cartoon and not realistic. They look like a spell, not actual explosive munitions. The shockwave from the hero as well. They don't have the brutality of such weapons. Bolters are fine though, blood exploding when hit is how it should be, gibs exploding when they die, etc.

In the video they say this map is just for presentation, and actual levels will have more paths to the goal and various strategic options.

Brah, TT minis are generally painted with battle damage, scratches, scorches, etc as those prove the character has such XP and is hardened by war + it adds such great distinction to their look and pride. Having glistening everything just is not War40k as it is in TT, that's for Harlequins ("Eww look at my pretty colours boys, now.. DIE!!!").

I'm willing to give this a chance but as a Dawn of War Mega Modding Vet (coded multiple DoW1 projects you cannot remotely imagine) + a TT player I remain suspect on this one especially on content control and the ability to bring back the "real feel" of War40k although I admit we're not the target audience as the gaming industry in the last decade is for broad appeal to maximize profits.

I expected to lament all of the ways that Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 3 wasn’t Dawn of War 2 when I sat down to play it, but thankfully, that wasn’t the case. Sure, the zoomed out camera and lower per-model detail makes it a bit less immersive than its prequel, but what it lacks in terms of presentation, it makes up in scale and depth of gameplay.

Couldn't agree more: looks like console-r*tard gameplay with bright "cartoon-like" colours and over-the-top pretty fx. Mad

I wonder what size Relic is these days and what their budget for the game is...maybe that's why everything looks so bad. It's also kind of missing a sense of weight, at 00:47 the tanks move forwards and reverse with no change in momentum.

The aesthetics definitely have something Blizzard-ish, which gives 'em the "e-sports-y" feel that I loathe, though when it comes to the rest I shall reserve my judgement until I've put my hands on it (if!). Trying to stay positive is an enormous effort, a man is destined to fail Sad Laughing

Maybe a slight mistake on that librarian model...the litany on his shoulder pad and legs is for a chaplain. Not a big deal though since I doubt you can zoom in that far to read it in the game.

Given it is an RTS, I would think they are sharing as many elements as possible across different models for memory efficiency, so expect a lot of re-use like that. Still, the detail is actually pretty impressive given their stated claims of being more zoomed out than DoW 2 (although I assume the hero characters will get some closeup cutscene action), and given the model is only 11.5K tris. Seems like they had some very nice high poly models for their texture bakes.
