|
 |
First off, I know that there are no download links at nforce.
I've downloaded a Hoodlum torrent of GTA:SA and have found that it's, yet again, a large collection of WinRAR files. Am I supposed to extract every one? And if so, to where?
Also, are there any tools out there I can use to extract them all at once? I've downloaded a few games in the past that just had a couple of image files, and those could be mounted or burned. So, why all the WinRAR files?

To extract use WinRar, if you open up the .rar file (you have a large number because it is a rar set) you should be able to extract the file within the rar set, as each file contains part of the .rar's contents. Releases are placed in RAR files to make it easier to download, easier to fix should a download be broken, its easier to distribute.. remember.. torrents are not used by everyone
Once the files are extracted, you should find yourself with an image file that you can burn or mount.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rar
Quote: | * Its handling of split volumes is very good. The most notable such format, before the advent of RAR, was ARJ.
* RAR archives can be of a solid format, in which all of the compressed files are treated as a single data block. Most currently used compression formats (with the exception of old ZIP) allow solid structuring.
* It features strong encryption capabilities. Older versions of the file format used a proprietary but strong encryption algorithm; newer versions use the AES encryption algorithm, which is considered very strong by today's standards. The only ways to recover an encrypted file are via dictionary or brute force attacks, which are usually infeasible.
* Extra redundancy can be added to an archive, making it more resistant to corruption. Even if part of an archive is damaged, it may be possible to fully recover the stored data if a large enough "recovery record" exists.
* (Win)RAR also has the capability of storing NTFS streams and security information within the archive – information that is usually lost on compression.

Thanks, but I'm wondering if there's a way for me to extract them all at once... Should I extract them to a seperate file, like in my program file list? Plus, it's going to be a pain to extract them one by one... Can I just extract them all in one big group, and let all of them unpack themselves?

As I said, if you open the .rar file (they should be named .rar, .r01, .r02 etc..) the contents of THAT .rar file is spread between each of the .r0* files, so extracting THAT file will extract them all.

Interesting. So, if I extract the very first .rar file, that's the last of it? Or if I extract any one? Because one of them I found only had a few files, while a seperate one had a readme, a setup.exe file... I was going to see if I could install it already by extracting only the contents of that .rar file, but I thought I should wait for a more, shall I say, "educated" opinion. Unless there's a university somewhere that teaches you how to install this random assortment of .15907932numberacronym crap I don't understand.

Well every file in the "rarset" should be named the same.. so for example, if the files you have downloaded are named the following:
GTA.rar
GTA.r01
GTA.r02
GTA.r0* ..... etc till
GTA.r50
If you extract ANY of those files (usually you use the .rar file as it is automatcially assigned to WinRar, and the others are not..) the contents within them are spread within ALL of the files.. so extracting one, pulls information from all of the files, and that is all that needs to be done.
If you have .rar files named differently, then they're contents will be different, so this .rar containing a setup and readme file relates to something else.. but could be needed for the game, I would suggest you conslut the readme to find out what they are for.

Thank you, you've helped tremendously. Every file is the same, I'm extracting one now. The .nfo says that all that's required is to unrar, burn or mount, install, apply a crack, and bingo. Thanks!

just right click on the lowest number .rar file and choose extract here ( assuming you have winrar installed) if you start from a higher number it will say you need to start from a diffrent .rar or something to that effect

You probably all know the situation: you've downloaded a bunch of scene
releases, movies/games/whatever. Some of them have multiple CDs, some have file
names like "whatever.001", which requires you to right-click -> "open with" etc.
to extract.
SCuN: the Scene Unpack tool
Open up explorer, browse to your download folder and select a bunch of
release folders, right click and select "SCuN - default" - presto, unpacking
automagification. If a download finishes while SCuN is still unpacking, you can
right-click and SCuN it, and it will be added to the unpack queue, rather than
having multiple simultaenous copies of SCuN running, withall the disk thrashing
that causes.

I thought he was talking about a rip version...? in which case the rip would be different right...
I dont recall ever opening a rarset for an iso and seeing setup.exe or any other file besides that of the image. Im confused
