How big are the chances of a fuck up? I never did an upgrade to a new Windows before. If it's pretty much certain some thing will be working wonky due to old settings/files, I won't even bother.

Takes 3x longer than a clean install and depending on your drivers/devices you might run into trouble. Not that it will fuck up in a total disaster... just time consuming.

It usually works well though. I mean, they do test it a lot, I suppose.

You asked. Windows 10 wasn't around 4/5 years ago, and you may not have had a problem with it back then, but you are now Rolling Eyes

Only advice, nothing more. Take it or leave it Smile

you waited so long. don't you want to wait another month till the newest "LARGE" update is available?
no need to do an second "upgrade install" then.
large updates or service packs, like they called them in the past, will not get installed like back in the day. it will be a n upgrade like coming from an old windows with of course possibilities something will not work afterwards. many people had problems after the first big update/service pack.

Why do you pull me back man, I was on the edge of the cliff, ready to jump in Sad So waiting is better? How will an update be like going from an old version to a new version? Isn't it just an update?

of course some people will jump in a second and say just do it nothing will happen. and maybe they are right. but that doesn't change the fact that more then enough people had problems with those new large updates/service packs. you can google it if you don't trust me.
i don't know why they changed the install method but it will not get installed like in the past or like a normal update. (probably because they can bring back removed bloatware and spy settings easier this way)

i just adviced you what i would do if i would be in your position.

"Windows 10 Anniversary Update" just wait a month till it's released if you can.

On the other hand he would get to experience windows upgrades first hand. It's not like you'd want to avoid them forever anyway Smile

Google man says it'll likely be released in July, so it might well be after the upgrade window.

you will lose your "free upgrade license" anyway as soon as you change too much hardware.
you told us you use a cracked windows 8. why don't you just use a kms'd Windows 10 version?

No. In the years to come there will be many such updates. So you will experience them anyway - whether you avoid this one or not.

Do it.

yes but the next one will be in 6-12 months. so it would be a long time for him until the next big upgrade. but whatever Smile that is just my opinion.
he could also use the LTSB edition, without store and all and would never expierence those updates then. but everyone like he wants to Very Happy

Why would I use a cracked version if they give it away for free? I don't plan on u[grading anything in the near future.

I had Win10 Home pre-installed on my lappy, found an OEM Pro License off da net and used it, now I am PRO and activated. Hope it stays that way come Redstone or when my year is up.

Its NOT forever. AFAIK once 365 days are up its pay-time. Razz Of course, KVMs can circumvent this as they have since a decade+. Never ever pay for anything related to MS or other products as its all out there to procure - just need to look. Cool

Uh.. yeah.. you're wrong. Once activated on the "free" license, Windows 10 is free for your system's life. It doesn't "expire" in 365 days Smile

just do an upgrade install. if you are on daz loader at least. you will get a fully activated legit win10 pro.

that's exactly what I did.

and yes, it's free forever on one system. the 1 year thing is only the time period that they allow people to do a free upgrade from win7/8. it's valid till july 29th I think. after that you cannot do the free upgrade anymore. but those who did it before that, have a lifetime license on that system.

Since when is this OS auto. downloading updates after merely clicking on the "Check for updates" button?!

I'm pretty sure another button popped up, when i manually searched for updates a few months ago.

Like Invasor said, it's you misunderstanding the offer. People had a year to upgrade and take advantage of the free offer, anyone who hadn't done so by the end of that year would have to pay for a full license. So yes, MS has given something away for free, forever, though with the - fairly substantial - caveat of "system" life. Change major HW and your activation may be voided.

not had, still have Wink runs out on june 29th (same day as the anniversary update is coming out)

and sabin as u say: its free forever, until you change your hardware (harddrive, gfx, ram shouldnt be problem, but changing the mainboard invalids the activation, dunno about cpu change). its like your drug dealer, the first shot is on the house to make you an addict Razz
