i'm on a win10 64 pro upgraded from win64 ultimate. Everything I had installed worked fine right away.

Takes 3x longer than a clean install and depending on your drivers/devices you might run into trouble. Not that it will fuck up in a total disaster... just time consuming. |

of course some people will jump in a second and say just do it nothing will happen. and maybe they are right. but that doesn't change the fact that more then enough people had problems with those new large updates/service packs. you can google it if you don't trust me.
i don't know why they changed the install method but it will not get installed like in the past or like a normal update. (probably because they can bring back removed bloatware and spy settings easier this way)
i just adviced you what i would do if i would be in your position.
"Windows 10 Anniversary Update" just wait a month till it's released if you can.

you will lose your "free upgrade license" anyway as soon as you change too much hardware.
you told us you use a cracked windows 8. why don't you just use a kms'd Windows 10 version?

Why would I use a cracked version if they give it away for free? I don't plan on u[grading anything in the near future.

I had Win10 Home pre-installed on my lappy, found an OEM Pro License off da net and used it, now I am PRO and activated. Hope it stays that way come Redstone or when my year is up.

Its NOT forever. AFAIK once 365 days are up its pay-time.  Of course, KVMs can circumvent this as they have since a decade+. Never ever pay for anything related to MS or other products as its all out there to procure - just need to look.

Since when is this OS auto. downloading updates after merely clicking on the "Check for updates" button?!
I'm pretty sure another button popped up, when i manually searched for updates a few months ago.

Like Invasor said, it's you misunderstanding the offer. People had a year to upgrade and take advantage of the free offer, anyone who hadn't done so by the end of that year would have to pay for a full license. So yes, MS has given something away for free, forever, though with the - fairly substantial - caveat of "system" life. Change major HW and your activation may be voided.
