Over the weekend my MB took the crap. One of the ramslots randomly bit the dust.

Moved to a 6600k with 16G DDR4 ram.
Got it all installed and setup today!

And for some reason a wild hair up my ass to spend ALL the extra (I mean all of it, my fun budget for the year is gone) on a 1080.

I think I got the last one off newegg. Ordered, sent my friend the link, and was 'out of stock'.
It should be here tomorrow! Time to see what the vive and rift look like on a 6600k and 1080.
Was debating waiting for the 'non founders' edition, but if I would have waited I would have talked myself out of it. And reference is good enough for me. Not like the vendor ones will be that much faster.

Was a lot of money to spend, but the setup should last me at least 3-4 years I hope.
Had that 2500k for 4-5 years I think.
Now to find a way to replace my 7 year old thermaltake armor case.

Nice system you got now Smile
I'm still not sure to upgrade or not. Still got my 2500K running at 4.3 Ghz and it holds up fairly well. If I'm going to replace the CPU I will replace everything and a new build will cost me about €1800.

What I ended up having to do.
I was going to keep it another year or so. But Saturday night windows locked up, couldnt get it to reboot, and playing with ram, video card, looking up bios codes, and cursing at it I finally got it to boot into windows, and only 1/2 my ram was there. An hour later I narrowed it down to one of the slots Sad

And thought a new MB for it is a waste of money, to replace a 5+ year old chip on. So was stuck between "buy a replacement MB thats technically end of life for cheaper, or just upgrade"

Congrats!

Have to upgrade my 2500k too sometime in the future, as i notice it starts to bottleneck in more games (constantly at full usage).

That will still take at least several months for me, as i would need to upgrade the mainboard and RAM too.

Yeah, my poor 2500k is definitely getting far too long in the tooth now. Gonna have to snag me a 2600k or 3770k at some point, if I can find one cheap enough. Congratulations DX! That's a monster upgrade and, whether joking or not, DW is right; should be seeing substantially better minimum FPS by eliminating bottlenecks in games that - finally - start to use MT correctly Very Happy

I still have to experience any tangible issues coming from my 3570K@4.5Ghz .

If I upgrade, it will be for the simple fun of having something new.

Games like W3, GTAV and C3 are the predominant ones that spring to mind for me - all of them take advantage of MT and show quite large performance gains on 8 vs 4. Hell, C3 is pretty much unplayable for me in areas with dense foliage and grass due to physics calculations, and GTAV I have to turn off the new enhanced grass for the same reason. W3 chugs down to terrible levels in crowded cities, another CPU limitation.

That would have been great... if they'd included the 2500k/3570k too Neutral Still, it's nice to see there IS a leap between older gen MT procs and newer gen.

That would be good but the thing is that many games still are using pretty much 4 cores/threads only. Sure if the OS is doing something under the hood more threads can be helpful but in general there shouldn't be dramatic difference when we are talking about the same CPU architecture.

"Another useless computer part? But you already had one, which was working just fine! I've seen you play that game with blocks or mine..whatever the other night, don't lie to me!"

Congrats, it's a great upgrade. Razz (I should be doing it too but the slimy wallet is a naysayer)

Yes, the vive and rift, and now this... I hear "Dont you have enough PC stuff??"
But with a 19yo son I can soften it with "well we dont have to get him new stuff, he gets my old card and ram, so hes now upgraded too!"

Downside and upsides to being the only income in the house:
Downside: Not nearly as much disposable income. I have to budget and weasel away savings.
Upside: Not much ground to stand on when arguing where I spend it (to a point).

yeah I think you would need around 4.6ghz or higher on that 2500k to breathe some more vigor into it 4.0ghz would put it a bit under a stock haswell counterpart, and that simply isn't enough for CPU hoggy games.

i'm playing through AC syndicate atm, and out of curiosity, i've compared stock vs my 4.6ghz oc on the 4670k, and the min FPS difference as well as frame time latency improvements are quite pronounced. it's most apparent when driving the carriage or in large crowds. with the stock clocks, the FPS will fluctuate a lot more affecting smootheness and in crowds a constant 60 fps becomes impossible, while at 4.6ghz the fluctuations are contained within a 2-3 fps delta, and NPC crowds don't drop FPS at all.

Im amazed!
First time I've even been in the top 30% of 3dmark since it came out.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/12381170

better than 95% of all scores.
I know its because the card JUST came out, and in a month or so when more people get it, and get the OC branded ones I will be back down the list.
But the 1080 is amazing. The 1080 and 1070 I think are going to be the new 8800/9800 of its day. ( had a 9800 for years, I LOVED that card).

Not trying to brag or such, just proud that for once in 10+ years Im not in the "meh your score is a hair above average". Laughing
