|
 |
Alright, I used to be good at this shit, but now I am stumped... Swallowing all pride from 7+ years of IT/networking and asking for help!
For the most part, my connection runs smoothly. I connect over wireless to my router.
But randomly, sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes once a day, sometimes once a week... My connection to my router will be completely fucked and I can't figure out why.
When pinging my router, the results will be ALL over the place. Ranging anywhere from 80ms to 2000ms. Yep. 2000ms. Here's a random screen from right now pinging:
Remember, this seems to happen randomly, not all the time, but when it happens, I can never figure out what is causing it.
Here's what I have previously investigated:
* It's not just this computer, all wireless clients seem to suffer when the issue is occurring.
* However, when I literally disconnected EVERY single OTHER device, the issue persisted. Even with ONE single wireless connection, then connection is still terrible during the issue.
* There is a wired machine that has <1ms ping when wireless machines are having the issue.
* The "resources" usage from the router web interface indicate that it is barely using any resources, the CPU and RAM are not struggling at all.
* The traffic outside the network to WAN is barely in use at all.
* I have no programs open currently that use ANY intense traffic, have shut down everything I can think of. No torrents, no Steam, no nothing is running right now.
* I have run every virus, malware, rootkit, scan I can find. None of them pick up anything.
* This can happen during the day, when no one else is home. No interfering devices are moving around the router, nothing is coming on or off during those hours to interfere with the connection.
* Restarting any combination of my computer and/or the router makes no difference.
* There seems to be no logic behind any pattern of recurrence or duration when it's happening.
* Everything is updated to latest version that I can think of. All wireless drivers, router on latest firmware, etc.
Only thing I haven't really tried is setting up any sophisticated network bandwidth monitoring tools, way too fucking lazy for that.
The router is a relatively new ASUS RT-AC66U.
What. The. FUCK.
Now that I've written this up, here is the latest screen of my pings:

if restarting the router doesnt help (if that would help it would be a clear case of the routers wlan failure if only wireless devices fuck up but no the wired device) its some source outside your network disturbing the wireless signal.
which channel are u using? many other wifi networks around your place?
maybe u have an old ass fridge? maybe not u, but some neighbour? dont laugh, those things can even fuck up your mobile connection to your 3g/lte operator

Why don't you try slinging the router out of the nearest window? It could help.
(Is there a way to test with another router?)

Agree with some of Janz suggestions. Cordless phones, microwaves, lamps near the router, etc could all contribute to wireless interference. Is there anything that "turns on" when you notice the router dropping pings (Even if it seems unrelated) And as Janz said, it could be your neighbor (especially in you live in an apt building or condo, etc) and you'll never figure it out. Try changing channels to a much higher or lower channel.

@sTo0z I have the same router which is working great albeit I disable all crappy ASUS services. Check:
- Patch it to latest firmware.
- Disable any ASUS service, AiProtection, Adaptive QOS, Traffic Analyser etc.
- IF using wireless disable the 2.4Ghz radio and leave 5Ghz and set AC 80mhz Band.
- Disable UPNP, IPv6, VPN etc unless you really need it.
- Disable DOS protection, URL filtering, network service filter etc.
- May or may not need as I had some issues with DSL stability speed. In Advanced DSL Settings disable Dynamic Line Adjustment and manually set the Stability Adjustment.

We live in a decent size house, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms.. the neighborhood is quiet and spaced out, I'd say the nearest neighbor is 100 ft away between our closest walls?
I don't notice anything coming on out of the ordinary during the issue, sometimes it is when no one is home. So nothing is moving around the router or coming on, nothing is really near it.
I was not able to test another router but, since it's such an infrequent issue, I wouldn't really know without a long term test.

mh k, so either your router is fucking around or something in your house.
but again: which channel are you using for the wifi? and any accesspoints or range extenders installed?

Have you tested can you re-produce the problem with ethernet cable too? During this problem have you tested is router running hot? It might be that CPU is throttling due high temps.
I had RT-N66U for a couple of years and now I'm using RT-AC3200.
I would suggest you to install Merlin's firmware instead of stock one: http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/
Also try to scan WiFi's around you with this http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html tool and check are the channels overlaping each other.

I have a Netgear 4500 Router and after what seems like 1-2 days all the wireless Android devices connected to it seem to have real slow Inet for no reason at all. Any Wired or Wireless PCs/laptops are fine. Fancy facking that shiet!
Only way I found to fix it is a quick reboot of the router then all those wireless Android devices (both tablets and phone) run their Intenet like butter. What da fack?

I think this is it. I mean, interference from neighbours or something inside your home. Either that or router problems, then you'd need a new one. Try changing the channel and see if it helps.

If you haven't managed to find a wireless client that doesn't experience the high latency when all the others do then it's probably the wireless component malfunctioning in the router. Maybe try a complete reset of the router and redo the configuration, even maybe try a dd-wrt firmware if compatible with your router. These are Linux based and much more efficient than many vendor firmware. It made a huge difference with my TP-Link at least.

So anyone know why on a Netgear 4500 after < 24 hrs all Android devices connected via WiFi to it have then v.slow internet connect while the desktop/laptops connected the same way do not? Only way to fix is to force-reboot the Router.. What.. the... heck?!?!

Hey gents,
Thanks for all the responses. The mystery continues and I have still not been able to lock down the issue, still comes and goes seemingly completely randomly.
But I swear there is some conspiracy going on around here... I had a 8 person LAN recently and we all were on a DIFFERENT ROUTER than my usual one, we had 3 WIRED users, and 5 wireless users, and the games were laggy as FUCK, and some were not.
Games ran fine:
* Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
* Call of Duty 4
* Battlefield Bad Company 2 (leaked LAN server)
* Nox
* Rise of Nations
Unplayable as fuck from lag:
* Blur
* The Ship
* Soldat
* Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
* WarCraft III
No firewalls, no antivirus, all really decent modern machines, and used a dedicated server where possible (wired).
There just has to be some crazy fucking issue I can't find, this can't be normal. And the wireless folks were all within like 6-7 feet of the router we were using. The router was flashed with DD-WRT and did not have any extra bells or whistles going on, it wasn't even connected to the internet, just a secluded network solely for the LAN traffic.
I refuse to believe that even with 5 wireless clients and modern machines that we can't even run some of these games without tremendous lag. Wireless is not ideal, but there's still PLENTY of bandwidth for these old games. Makes no sense.
Anyways, planning second LAN, and have ordered a new Router for the home, let's see if that does anything.
EDIT: Oh yah, channel switching did not help at all, everything on internet router was all Auto, tried to bump wireless to N only and switch channels, tries 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz networks, no improvements.

Seems like some kind of interference. As a last suggestion I'd say try disconnecting all other electric/electronic stuff in the house from the power sockets and see if the problem persists. I guess it could be another electronic device causing interference, but it's a shot in the dark...
unless you have 2 faulty routers.
