If I disappoint anyone with this thread, or take away his/her illusions, I apologize in advance.
- No known species of the Reindeer can fly. But there are 300.000 species of living organisms, who still have to be classified, and even though they are mostly insects and bacteria it doesnt exclude reindeers, who only Santa has seen.
- There are 2 billion children (people under the age of 10) on earth. But because Santa doesnt visit moslems, hindus, jews and buddhists, it reduces the work to about 15% - 378 million children (according to the Census Buero). With an average of 3.5 children per house, it will be 91.9 million houses Santa has to visit. We assume there will be at least one nice kid in every house.
- Santa has a 31-hour-christmas-day, because of the different time zones if he travels from east to west. That will be 822.6 visits per second. That concludes, that Santa has for every house that has a nice kid in it 1/1000th of a second for his work: park, jump out of the sleigh, climb down the chimney, fill the socks, put the presents under the tree, eat his cookies and milk, climb the chimney back up and fly to the next house.
- Assumed that all those 91.8 million stops are equally apart on the earth, we get a distance of 1.3km from house to house, a total of 120.8 million km (not including the breaks for what everybody has to do at least once in 31 hours).
- This means, that Santa's sleigh flies at a speed of 1040km/second, 3000 times the speed of sound. For comparison: The fastest vehicle ever built by man, the Ulysses Space Probe, holds the record at 43.8km/second; a common reindeer at a maximum of 24km/hour.
- The cargo of the sleigh brings us to another interesting fact. Assuming every kid gets not more than a medium set of Lego (about 1kg), the sleigh will have a weight of 378,000 tons, not including Santa himself. A common reindeer can't pull more than 175kg. Even if we assume it can pull 10 times of its own weight, you need more than just eight or ten reindeers, you need at least 216,000 reindeers. This raises the weight of the sleigh even more - 410,400 tons.
- 410,400 tons at a speed of 1040km/second create an enormous aerodynamic resistance. Because of that the reindeers will heat up, exactly like a space shuttle reentering the earth's atmosphere. The pair of reindeers up front have to absorb an energy of 16.6 trillion Joule. In other words: They will go up in flames immediately, the next pair of reindeers will hit the aerodynamic resistance and will create an earsplitting boom. The whole team of reindeers will be vaporized within a couple of 1/1000th of a second.
- Santa himself will be exposed to an acceleration 17,500 times bigger than gravity. A 120kg Santa would be nailed to the back of his sleigh, with a force of 20,6 million Newton.
- We conclude: Even if he made his yearly trip even once, he would be dead today.
