I swear, every time I don't play a military nation its like I'm cursed. First time I do it, both my research vessels get destroyed by anomalies within 10 min of the game starting, then immediately after a random faction event happens where a rogue faction of my kingdom spawns a fleet almost triple my initial fleet in power and procedes to pretty much destroy every installation I've build in the system and my fleet so I'm pretty much fucked from the start of the game.

Second time I go peaceful I spawn right next to a fallen empire, ok.. nothing to it, I play nice and build an embassy, trying my best to stay friendly ... few hours in to the game as I become a big empire, expanding south ... run in to another fallen empire, a race of space hogs that are really angry at me for expanding so close to them and ask me to destroy like half my colonies or its war ... say no and soon after I find myself getting destroyed by them with their massive fleets. So yeah, sandwiched between 2 fallen empires.. and holy shit are fallen empires bs, like I was pretty much the largest empire at that point and it was late in the game, massive fleet , but they just dwarf you.

Yep, they are just another strategic resource, like batarian (or however it's spelled) stones. Those let you build some high-performance power plants for each source, and the pets let you build zoos IIRC, that boost happiness.

Yeah, FEs are fun. Very Happy

They supposed to be like that tho, they are remnants of the last generation of empires, with tech lightyears above anything you can normally research. You can slowly eat away at them though, since they don't replace ships, and if you can scan their wrecks, they might reveal some pretty kick-ass tech.

One FE declared a war on me, probably because I got too close to them. They wanted me to abandon 3 planets and humiliate, I saved the game and decided to try my chances Very Happy Well...when I saw 20k of force in a single fleet when I had ~5k I thought that it might be hard. And then, couple more fleets appeared = nope, nope, the fuck nope. Load, I didn't like those planets anyway ;D

Patch 1.0.2 live:
Quote:
This Hotfix contains:
- Fixed exploits in species customization which allowed players ignore limits to trait and ethic points etc.
- Improved performance for war demands view
- 'Hostile fleet detected' is now only shown when the fleet is heading towards one of your colonized systems, preventing massive spam in large wars.
- UI fixes in server browser
- It is now possible to connect directly to a server id
- Fixed CTD when renaming sectors
- Fixed CTD when fleets were traveling too far away from the galaxy center
- Fixed CTD when a country was destroyed as a result of combat
- Fixed CTD caused by ships shooting at ships that are not visible
- Fixed an issue where you could not build space ports with some screen resolutions
- It is no longer possible to build robot pops on uncolonized planets
- Game pads are now turned off by default as this caused stuttering on some configurations. Game pads can be enabled again with the -gamepad launch option or the "gamepad" console command

We are aware of an issue where join game via the steam friends menu won't work if the game is password protected. This is still an issue but you should be able to bypass it with the Direct Join button. The host can see the server ID either in the multiplayer lobby or, if the game has started, in the tooltip for the date in the top right.

wow, gamepads caused stuttering.

Well, to be honest, the game does get bland Razz

I think it'll need few expansions to truly shine (like PDX games usually)

Though I'll still probably play it until HOI 4, can't recall any other interesting releases any time soon.

Yeah, I'm still doing my first campaign, and now that everything is close to being colonised, it's getting a bit monotonous. I should start looking into some aggressive expansion opportunities. Razz

My recommendation: start on a small map, even the smallest, without maxing out the possible AI empires. Room to expand, but not too overwhelming in the long run.

Also, there are definite signs that the game was rushed out the door too early (possibly to not cannibalize the HOI4 sales). The factions in the empire are woefully underdeveloped, they are mostly only asking for secession, and slaves never rebel, they just have a placeholder faction, that never goes beyond "no effect" even on 100% support (no surprise tho, as they said this is the case in one of the last pre-release streams), same for xenophile pops demanding slave emancipation. They don't demand policy changes, or asking to stop primitive-experimentation, or purists demanding a stop to genetic modifications, or things like that.

Also, the AI is pretty much braindead, but everyone knew that already.

But other than that, the game is still a blast, and despite these (temporary) shortcomings, it's definitey my favorite game of the year so far. I'm still playing the first campaign FFS, and no signs of stopping in the near future. Smile

Yeah, the early/early-mid game is where it shines currently. Will need some more elaborate trading, some espionage, more events and so on before it truly becomes the game it has the potential to be.

Yeah i'm getting the same vibe. Really fun at the start and mid, but late game it gets a bit boring, since all you have is basically combat. I agree that the game needs trading, espionage and more lategame events.

That's my what my second empire will be. Right now I have a goal I want to achieve in the current campaign (have to reach, and carve away at a FE to be able to deal with my galaxy's precursor civ's old capital system), after that I'll do just that. Twisted Evil

Still, I'm having a good time (the tutorial is also surprisingly thorough), but I'm only 3-4 hours in. It's a shame to read that a lot of cool stuff and potential interactions are barebones, I imagine revisiting the game in the future with all the goodies will be a must as per usual.

I got the alliens some 20 years before that building research showed up. So I just stared at that cute icon not knowing what to do with it for a long time.

My thoughts exactly. Another thing that I think is a bit underdeveloped currently is also research. I breezed through to lvl.2 lasers and missiles, and the got stuck with them for a long time. I got battleships before getting lvl.4 weapons and a big amount of those supposedly rare techs.

I got bored and went to war with dormant empire, and while they kicked my ass, I managed to down couple of their ships in my empire. One debris explored gives instant research access to all their weapon and armour techs. Research time is still very long, but I imagine that if you manage to waylay their transports you can shorten it considerably. Obviously you need to admit defeat and cede planets as soon as you get them, but the way that you cede planets to them isn't at all that unpleasant, since they don't take them and just leave them empty.

Yeah it tends to usually work out like Trump in Spaceā„¢ - my favorite is the initial responses when new civs contact you. You have either the choice of "Alien scum!" or "Respect my authoritah, or else!", no half-measures right from the beginning. Very Happy

It will definitely need a DLC or two to get more diplomacy options going, and especially some espionage so there's a more indirect way of affecting other empires. As it is right now, pacifists need to join an alliance/federation or build a massive fleet of their own anyway because that's the only real measure of your power and influence.

Paradox's court composer sure has earned his pay, most scifi OSTs tend to be rather forgettable. Some of the tunes in Stellaris are really good, but CK2 is still my favorite for now. Would be good if eventually there was some DLC music packs for specific types of government; if you're playing the evul oppressive type, I want the evul oppressive music to match.

The complexity and depth in their games is outstanding, and it has to be admired, no matter what. This is actually pretty easy to understand, and get into, although to master, will take eons.

I always wanted to love and play Europa Universalis IV and CK2, but I'll admit, they both are way out of my league. Clever masterpieces, but untouchable to me I'm afraid. Maybe I just ain't got the patience to learn no more?, dunno?, but 2 games I always wished I could pick up and play.

They are on a role Paradox, and well deserved. Smile

Yeah i'm happy for paradox, though they worry me a bit now with EU4 where recently I was looking to get back into that.. and reviews say that they keep adding DLC stuff to the base game that you can't access without the DLC, but the game still uses the feature (AI does) so you screw yourself in the game if you don't buy it

That instantly scared me off again as I'm not interested in buying like the 5 DLCs that came out since I last played it.

I hope Stellaris isn't going down that same road.

I don't have a problem with them making DLC because as you say, that's just what they do.
What I don't want is them waving those DLC features around in your face even if you don't have it, polluting your game with things you cannot use.
