AND my initial opinion improved a lot!! I found this time everything better and enjoyed it more overall. Maybe because my expectations on the first run were too high or maybe because I've followed the unofficial story, that got deleted with this new film...
I'm really looking forward to ep 8. I agree this first one was kinda standard in many ways, but I think that the change of director will help make the movies feel different; they need to move away from the checklist approach to what makes a Star Wars movie.
Rogue One coming up first, and back to the Death Star topic we go... maybe/hopefully for the last time in a good while.
Do mind... the J.J. is still overseeing it the way that Lucas did it back in the days.
And bah, right... there's still that Rogue one dealing with a death star... I have such massive hate for the planet destroying devices after seeing 1 to 7 in a row.
well... I have to watch it again, but from what I remember from the cinema, this movie doesn't even deserve to buy a legitimate copy of it...
have to give it a second chance.
Gonna give this a second chance as well.. i was very disappointed, just didn't have the epic feeling of Lucas films (including the "new", they might be silly and all that but the sense of adventure and epicness was there)

Nope. J.J. is overseeing it in the way he is overseeing Star Trek Beyond or the Mission Impossibles after III. Meaning not really. At least not anywhere near the way you imply.
Lucas had "written by" credit on 5 of the 6 SW movies and "story by" on the remaining one (which also happens to be the best received one; SW V).
Kasdan, would had been a likely candidate to oversee the movies but he has announced he will leave the franchise once he finishes writing the Young Han Solo spinoff with his son - and the only reason he agreed to do it was because he would make his family happy.
Abrams might have some influence on production aspects by suggesting cast, crew, locations and so on as the producer he is, but not much else.

So explain in what ways he will be overseeing. Because Lucas' way of overseeing was writing and you made that comparison.
