MSAAx4 makes the picture look sharp. But the reconstruction technique (2/3 of your resolution) makes the picture look blurry.

Yes, because it's not an upscale which would just look blurry (your monitor can do that for free and your GPU with a very low cost), it's a reconstruction. So it becomes that very weird sharp/blurry/sort of in focus/but not really thingy.

Yeah i thought the same, sharp and blurry at the same time. It's also feels like that when playing the game. If i don't play it on my display's native resolution ( 4k) even at 1440p textures it's all blurriness and really unsharp textures. Other games play fine at 1440p.

Thank you for explaining this and @consolitis as well, i was wondering why this happened.

In this game 4K is 1440p.

4K = 3840х2160. The game renders at 2/3rds of the resolution you select and reconstructs a full resolution image from there.

3840 x 2 / 3 = 2560
2160 x 2 / 3 = 1440

So 4K in this game is 1440p + reconstruction.

I didn't know that, thanx for telling me! It's all clear now that explains everything.

Considering the game isn't even running correctly at 720p (Laughing) you can imagine the shocking level of HW required to run it natively at 1080p/1440p/4k Very Happy

It's there to improve quality.. compared to a simple upscale which was inevitable on XB1.

The reasons it was designed like that is because they couldn't get it to run at 1080p 4x MSAA on the XB1.

Alan Wake was also 540p 4x MSAA instead of 720p on 360.

But where AW was simply upscaling one frame at a time, this time what they are doing is upscaling a mixture of the last 4 frames to reconstruct detail and get a better quality upscale.

Now this whole mechanism appears to have 3 important parts:

a) rendering in lower resolution
b) 4x MSAA
c) reconstruction based on 4 frames

Let's start from the bottom:

c)
The reconstruction might be baked in the rendering pipeline in ways that it's impossible (or well outside the budget and scope of a PC port) to remove. The rendering of entire effects could depend on it.. (Or not..)

b)
MSAA might also be necessary for the engine to work or the visuals to look acceptable. I'm sure the reconstruction is fine tuned to work on an MSAA'd image and if you can't get rid of the reconstruction then you can't get rid of the MSAA either. Maybe they can give the option to lower it to 2x though for those wanting better performance? Although this might make it look like ass.. Also keep in mind Alan Wake required the use of at least 2x MSAA or.. grass wouldn't render. They expanded on that concept with this game/engine.

a)
However rendering on a lower resolution doesn't necessarily have to be a thing.. So they could offer the option to render at native res and do eg (1080p + 4x MSAA) x 4 last frames = 1080p final image. That would make the image sharper although still not as sharp as a game which doesn't use reconstruction.

A 960p FXAA'd upscale on the XB1 would look sharper and plenty of other games did just that. But Remedy also very obviously aimed for a prerendered CGI/film/soft look so at some point they must have decided 4x MSAA is a must and eventually ended up with the above setup.

I'm also not convinced they did as good of a job as they could with the reconstruction because other console games have used similar setups with I believe better results, but that's beside the point of explaining what were their intentions.

edit
Actual XB1 image, you can see they were going for a prerendered CGI/film/soft look:

It almost looks like a a still from a prerendered trailer Blur would make.

eg a screenshot from it:

Definitely some issue with driver, uwp etc. I would try setting that 970 to factory settings just to eliminate that as the cause. The game seems to be rather sensitive to overclocking.

Good question, i can't try it myself cuz then i have to log into windows store, then my lan account will be changed into an online account and i have to remove this again etc. also have to unregister the game etc and undo some more changes, to much hassle but the tool works. I think what neeger93 says but i hope someone will try this out who hasn't done this by hand yet. I noticed you need vcredistx64 2015 installed, otherwise you'll get an msvcr140.dll error.

After 2.5 hours, I've come to the conclusion that QB is a boring TPS with impressive production values and nothing more.

Back to Copy-Paste Souls III, I guess.
