On Friday morning I came up to a red light and was braking, someone went into the back of me.

His fault entirely, I got out the car and he was about 23-24 and very apologetic. Admitted guilt and said he'd rather 'pay for it, than go through insurance'

I drive a car which is older than 10 years old and took it to a local garage. Not loads of damage but circa 250/300/350 quid in damage.

My worry is, do I go insurance or allow him to pay it. He has been very straight up and apologetic from the start. But I've never been in a scrape and I have no injuries. It was a slow accident, bit of a shunt but not a serious accident.

What's best to do? The young lad who crashed into me has his premiums and excess to think of and I don't wanna screw him over unecessarily but need to do the right thing from my point of view. Insurance claim or let him pay?

Cheers guys

When you say "no injury" I assume it was a low impact, right? Because I had a friend who got rear-ended and did the exact same thing and started getting neck complaints after a few weeks and it took him many months to kinotherapy to heal the pain and he had to stay home for several weeks because he couldn't work - and because he had settled, he didn't get any insurance for it.

Other than that, just have him sign a statement of the damage he did and be sure that you get it properly fixed.

Also, if he says he "knows a guy who can fix this" - don't. Let it be done by a proper garage. My brother got rear-ended at a red light as well and the guy was going to let a friend of his do it who has a garage and it was a joke - the cover of the trunk handle fell off after a month, the trunk doesn't close neatly and the rear bumper is clearly not properly aligned at the sides. My brother still feels sorry for having folded and letting his friend do it.

So I have a bad back injury from 2 years back. Lower back, 2 discs damaged,1 bulging and I can't do any exceecise without having some kind of pain after.

I've been in a good place with my back recently but after the bump my back was sore all day. But Saturday and today, 0 problem. My bank goes out at the drop of a hat anyway.

The choice of garage is mine and the guy who crashed into me has said he'd pay it no problem. We've been in contact and he seems straight up. I told him the cost and he said he's paying it no problem.

No not at all.

I don't want to claim for injury at all. My back is fine.

The reason I don't want to claim is because his insurance next year will be ridiculous. All for a small accident.

I'm just trying to find out whether I should tell my insurer or just allow him to pay it.

I used to work for Aviva so I have some experience here.

As long as the garage you use, uses proper parts and gives you a warranty on the work done, it is in both your interests to get it done privately - your No Claims Bonus would be affected, and his premium will be obscene next year.

Just make sure you get the money from the guy BEFORE you get the work done - or at least make damn sure you can guarantee he will pay.

Most insurance has accident forgiveness. If it's your only claim within X amount of years they won't increase your premium unless you get in a wreck again. I'd just call your company and ask; then decide.

I got rear ended a couple years back, nothing major but cracked the plastic bumper cover. Young guy wanted to pay as well, I went and got a quote from the garage around the corner from me ($1300) and he just handed over the cash. Unfortunately my wife actually wanted to fix the problem, although it was only 6 months old at the time.

Thanks for the advice man. This is what I presumed buy the Mrs wants to go by the book.

I'm gonna get the money from the lad before the work is done.
